JOHOR must achieve an average annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 8.36% to reach its target of becoming a developed state by 2030.
State investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said Johor's GDP in 2023 was RM148bil.
He said it needed to grow to RM260bil within the next seven years to meet the Maju Johor 2030 agenda.
'This means Johor cannot afford to continue with a business-as-usual approach.
'We need a bold paradigm shift,' he said in his winding up speech during the state assembly sitting at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar.
He said this was why the state government had set up the Johor Economic Transformation Programme (JETP), Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and Forest City Special Financial Zone.
'JETP is a medium and long-term transformation plan to ensure Johor's economic development remains sustainable and inclusive by the year 2030.
'It is a component of the Maju Johor 2030 vision and is aligned with the 13th Malaysia Plan that will be tabled by the Federal Government,' he added.
Lee pointed out how JETP supported efforts such as JS-SEZ, thereby forming a strong framework to ensure Johor remained globally competitive.
He said a master plan was being developed with the Federal Government to ensure the zone delivered long-term higher value economic activities, local SME participation and talent development.
'We are committed to ensuring that Johor does not end up as a low-cost satellite for foreign firms. Value must be created here,' he stressed.
Lee also said that JS-SEZ-linked projects included the Elevated Automated Rapid Transit as a feeder to the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link that is expected to begin operations on Jan 1, 2027.
He revealed that Johor was working with the Federal Government on a regulatory sandbox model to test new policies in a controlled environment to speed up project implementation.
On global trade risks, Lee warned of the negative effects of tariffs: 'The proposed US tariffs could directly impact Johor-made electronics, semiconductors and furniture.
'These sectors are closely tied to global demand, and any disruption will hit us hard.
'The tariffs could raise production costs, reduce export volumes and shrink profit margins.'
He said Malaysia could end up receiving too many imported goods, especially because global trade routes and suppliers are changing due to factors like trade wars, sanctions and geopolitical shifts.
'We welcome the Federal Government's support to help cushion the impact of global uncertainties.
'From loan guarantees to anti-dumping measures, these steps will protect our industries and SMEs,' said Lee.
Among the steps are RM1bil in loan guarantees under the Business Financing Guarantee Scheme, RM500mil in SME financing support, anti-dumping actions against unfair imports, and tighter control over Certificates of Origin for US-bound goods.
Lee revealed that Johor was rapidly rising as a data centre hub, with 42 projects in various stages and 13 already operational.
He also highlighted the Johor Talent Development Council's Job Fair X MyFutureJobs Johor 2025 held at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn in Batu Pahat for jobseekers.
'With a holistic strategy combining infrastructure development, technological innovation and market diversification, Johor is committed to long-term sustainable growth,' he said.

JS-SEZ, RTS link to boost Johor property market
JOHOR BARU: Johor's property market is expected to enter a new phase of growth following the signing of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) agreement and the ongoing development of the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. Real estate services company Nawawie Tie said in a statement that residential property demand is expected to grow gradually particularly in the rental market. 'Residential property demand in Johor is led by locals, Malaysians working in Singapore, and Singaporeans with the JS-SEZ poised to attract greater foreign interest 'While residential property demand is expected to grow progressively, owner occupiers are likely to remain cautious until there is greater clarity on supporting policies and infrastructure rollouts. 'Landed properties continue to be the preferred choice for buyers, representing 65% of total transactions in Johor and the Johor Baru district accounted for 60% of these transactions,' according to the statement. Meanwhile, the industrial property market in the Johor Baru district is projected to thrive, driven by the expansion of the manufacturing sector and rising foreign direct investment. Johor is also emerging as a key regional hub for data centres, further boosting demand for industrial properties. In the first quarter of this year, a total of 353 housing units were transacted in Johor, with terraced units and semi-detached units being the most prominent. Johor Baru remains the preferred location for industrial players. — Bernama

Finding the right fare for RTS link
SINGAPORE: A study is currently being conducted to determine the fare for the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) train that is expected to run every 3.6 minutes during peak hours, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke. 'We hope that with the right price mechanism in place, we can encourage more people to use the RTS Link. 'The whole idea of the project is to make a modal shift for people to use public transport to cross the Causeway,' he said at a joint press conference with his Singaporean counterpart here yesterday to unveil the first of the eight train sets that will be used for the cross-border service that is expected to commence by Jan 1, 2027. The decision on the fare will be made by RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), the joint venture company formed between Malaysia's Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd to operate the RTS Link service. The 4km route from Bukit Chagar in Johor to Woodlands North in Singapore will be served by eight train sets manufactured by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd. Singapore was represented at the event held at the Singapore Rail Testing Centre (SRTC) near Tuas by its acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow. Loke also said an open payment system is also expected to be introduced to provide greater convenience. 'We should have multiple modes of payment, like credit or debit cards, as well as Touch 'n Go,' he said. On the RTS Link's operating hours, Loke said the matter will be addressed closer to the opening date, though he quickly ruled out round-the-clock operations, citing the need for scheduled maintenance. Meanwhile, Siow said Singapore has no plans to reduce the frequency of bus services even after the RTS Link commences. 'We want to give commuters as many opportunities as possible to take public transport,' he added. The Causeway, which sees more than 300,000 daily commuters, is currently one of the busiest border crossings in the world. In a joint statement from the two ministries, it was announced that offsite systems integration testing for the first train set is scheduled to occur at SRTC over the coming months. Trains 02, 03, 04 and 05 have been delivered to CRRC's train facility in Batu Gajah, Perak, for assembly. This process will be replicated for Trains 06, 07 and 08, where, upon completion, the train sets will be transferred to the Wadi Hana Depot in Johor Baru for further testing and final preparations before being commissioned. The four-car train set has a white livery with red and blue accents – inspired by the colours of the Malaysia, Johor and Singapore flags. Each train set, measuring 76.4m in total, can be packed with up to 1,087 passengers each to enable the RTS service to move up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction. As of June 30, the RTS Link's system works are 56% complete. This includes trackwork, rolling stock (the trains), traction power, and the integration of signalling, communications, and control systems. Trackworks are expected to be completed by the end of this month, while the installation of the traction power supply equipment is currently in progress. Throughout July and August, key activities include the inspection, testing and commissioning of the traction power supply, including intertripping and interlocking systems. These works are essential to ensure the readiness of the power supply system to support train testing activities at Wadi Hana in September.

Onn Hafiz: RTS Link achieves 50 per cent physical progress
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project has achieved 56 per cent physical progress as of June. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said it involves track construction, station development as well as system and train testing. "I am confident that all of this is a good start in elevating Johor as a major economic power in the region. "It also reflects the commitment of the state government together with the federal government and Singapore in building modern, efficient and safe infrastructure for the convenience of the people," he said in a Facebook post yesterday. Onn Hafiz said the RTS Link, which connects Bukit Chagar, here to Woodlands North, Singapore in just five minutes, will solve the problem of border congestion as well as strengthen Malaysia-Singapore relations and stimulate the regional economy. He said the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, was designed with high efficiency and is capable of carrying 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction and a frequency of 3.6 minutes during peak hours, thus being able to accommodate up to 180,000 passengers per day. Onn Hafiz together with Transport Minister Anthony Loke today witnessed the launch of the first RTS Link train in Singapore, which was also attended by Singapore's Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow and Singapore's Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. – BERNAMA
