Adidas ad showing shoe on Acropolis sparks outrage in Greece

A promotional video for Adidas featuring a multicoloured trainer on the Acropolis has sparked public outrage in Greece, prompting the government on Friday to announce legal action as no filming permit was granted.
'The legal procedure was not followed,' Culture Minister Lina Mendoni told Skaï radio, describing the imagery as 'extremely unpleasant' and likening it to 'the Adidas shoe... kicking the Acropolis'.
She said a legal complaint would be filed against 'all those responsible,' with the judiciary expected to investigate how the incident occurred.
Adidas's Greek subsidiary did not respond to AFP requests for comment.
The image, splashed across the front pages of several Greek media outlets on Friday, was captured during a drone show held Thursday evening at the Zappeion Hall.
The neoclassical building in central Athens is used for events and managed by a state-run legacy commission under the supervision of the Finance Ministry.
The drone display was staged by the company Essence Mediacom as part of a campaign for an Adidas product.
According to some reports, Essence Mediacom applied on April 30 for permission to hold the show and was granted approval in exchange for a fee of 'just 380 euros ($423)'.
Essence Mediacom also did not respond to AFP's inquiries.
Mendoni said: 'The Zappeion administration should have sought approval from the Culture Ministry before granting such authorisation.'
'There has been a violation of the law on archaeological heritage,' she added.
Greek law regulating the use of archaeological sites -- many dating back more than 2,500 years -- is particularly strict.
The Parthenon temple atop the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the 5th century BC, received over 4.5 million visitors in 2024.
'The Acropolis, a global symbol of culture and democracy, cannot be treated as a backdrop for commercial use,' said the opposition Pasok party, accusing the government of negligence.
'Serious questions arise about the role and responsibility of the Culture Ministry,' the party added.
In early April, the Culture Ministry had rejected a request from Oscar-winning Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos to film at the Acropolis, arguing that the scenes did not reflect the historic site's image.
The incident has also sparked criticism on social media, with users posting: 'No to Yorgos Lanthimos. Yes to Adidas. No to art, yes to money.'

LONDON — Sportswear brand Adidas warned on Wednesday that it may have to hike prices in the United States, after reporting U.S. tariffs would add around 200 million euros (US$231 million) to costs in the second half. Shares in Adidas fell more than 7 per cent, bringing the stock's losses since the start of this year to 23 per cent. Highlighting the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's volatile trade policies, Adidas said uncertainty was holding it back from increasing its annual guidance, and it has not yet decided on possible price increases to mitigate the impact. 'We still do not know what the final tariffs in the U.S. will be,' CEO Bjorn Gulden said in a statement. 'We also do not know what the indirect impact on consumer demand will be should all these tariffs cause major inflation.' Adidas will review its pricing and decide which products it could hike prices on in the U.S., once tariffs are finalized, Gulden told journalists on a conference call, declining to say how much prices might increase. 'We will try to keep the prices on known models (stable) as long as we can, and then do new pricing on product that hasn't existed before,' he said. Adidas sales grew 2.2 per cent in euro terms to 5.95 billion euros (US$6.9 billion) in the quarter, lower than analysts' average estimate of 6.2 billion euros, according to data compiled by LSEG. The shortfall will likely fuel fears that, after a run of very strong sales growth fueled by its trendy three-striped multicolored Samba and Gazelle shoes, Adidas is losing momentum. 'For investors to view this as a temporary setback, the company will need to deliver a reassuring message regarding the outlook for H2 and the early 2026 order book,' UBS analyst Robert Krankowski said in a note to clients. Footwear tariffs The U.S. earlier this month announced a 20 per cent levy on many Vietnamese exports and a 19 per cent tariff on goods from Indonesia - Adidas' two biggest sourcing countries which produce 30 per cent and 23 per cent respectively of Adidas products sold in the U.S. Footwear imports into the U.S. already faced tariffs before Trump, and the new duties mean tariffs on footwear from Vietnam have gone up to 46 per cent, from 26 per cent, and from Indonesia to 43 per cent from 24 per cent, Gulden said. Like many other sportswear companies, including Puma, Adidas has been frontloading product shipments into the U.S. ahead of tariffs, driving its inventories up 16 per cent to 5.26 billion euros at the end of June. Despite the impact of tariffs, Gulden said the U.S., which accounts for around a fifth of Adidas sales, is still a key market. 'We want to grow and we are also willing to over-invest in the U.S. to double the business,' he said on the call. Higher tariffs already had a 'double-digit' million euro impact on Adidas' second quarter, and Adidas is also contending with a weaker dollar and weaker Chinese yuan taking 300 million euros off quarterly sales. Quarterly operating profit, however, reached 546 million euros, ahead of analysts' expectations for 520 million. Adidas said 'lifestyle' revenues - from sneakers and casual clothing - grew 13 per cent, helped by cow print, leopard print and metallic versions of its SL72 and Samba sneakers. Television footage showed a small number of protesters chanting 'Freedom for Palestine' near the port, with riot police pushing them back and minor scuffles breaking out. The cruise ship passengers disembarked in Rhodes without incident, Greek media said. Anti-war activists had called for demonstrations on the island during a scheduled stop by the Israeli cruise ship, the Crown Iris, which was reportedly carrying more than 600 tourists. But representatives of local businesses on the island had opposed the protest. Last week, the Crown Iris left another Greek island, Syros, early without its passengers disembarking after more than 150 protesters demonstrated at that island's port. The demonstrators unfurled Palestinian flags and called for an end to the war in Gaza. There were no reports of any violence in Syros. Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar contacted his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, over the Syros incident. The Associated Press

Contra Guys: It can be advantageous to cast a wide – and global

How much of your portfolio is invested overseas? This is an important question, especially in a year such as this one, when many European stock indexes are beating North American benchmarks, including the S&P/TSX Composite Index. Though many Canadians are overweight in Canadian stocks, we remain true to our contrary roots and try to avoid home-country bias. Investing in our home market can have certain tax advantages, and avoids foreign exchange rate volatility, but it can also reduce diversification, increase risk and impact returns. Ultimately, it is a big world out there, and it can be advantageous to cast a wide net. This is why we make a habit of investing in exchange-traded funds and equities that do business around the globe. One such ETF is the Global X MSCI Greece ETF GREK-A, which tracks the performance of the MSCI All Greece Select 25/50 Index. Here at Contra the Heard Investment Newsletter, we took a stake in GREK in October, 2015. Back then, the Greek financial crisis was rumbling into its seventh year and few investors wanted to touch the country. The government had just negotiated its third bailout package, introduced capital controls and then-Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had won a surprise re-election. These actions tempered the surging value of credit default swaps and yields on government debt, but the nation remained on the cusp of default. Gross domestic product had fallen from US$352.1-billion in 2008 to US$194.6-billion in 2015, the unemployment rate was around 25 per cent and the banking sector was on life support, as roughly 47 per cent of all loans were non-performing. To illustrate just how bad the Hellenic banking crisis was, during the peak of the 2008-09 U.S. financial crisis, America's non-performing loans were only 7.5 per cent. Amid these economic depression-like conditions, the Greek stock market sank to one of the cheapest in the world and we took a stake. Not only was it inexpensive, but we figured the Troika (a decision-making group composed of the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund) would not let Greece fail. The Troika had already bailed out the country three times and, within the context of the European Union, Greece was too big to fail. Once the ETF was in our portfolio, we practised patience. While corporate turnarounds take time, national ones can take even longer. In 2023, I wrote about the Greek ETF for The Globe and Mail. At the time, I argued the ETF was still cheap and the country was performing well thanks to a series of reforms that had cut the national debt, streamlined regulations, reduced tax avoidance, digitized government processes and put the banks back on their feet. Earlier: Greece's stock market is on a tear - and this ETF tracking it is poised for even more gains Fast forward to the present day and the turnaround has turned into a growth story. Greece regained an investment-grade credit rating in late 2023, the country's debt-to-GDP ratio has fallen from more than 200 per cent to 153.6 per cent and it produced a budgetary surplus of 1.3 per cent of GDP in 2024. By contrast, the euro zone average was a deficit of 3.1 per cent. The Greek government surplus is even more impressive given that most European countries have been spending just over 2 per cent of GDP on defence while Greece spent approximately 3.1 per cent last year. This should serve Greece well as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization alliance moves toward a new 5-per-cent target. Aside from government finances, the rest of Greece's economy is doing well too. The unemployment rate has fallen to under 8 per cent, the household-debt-to-GDP ratio has fallen from nearly 67 per cent to 39 per cent since the financial crisis and the financial sector's non-performing loan balance now stands at under 4 per cent. The banks have done so well that they now account for more than half of the GREK ETF versus around a quarter a decade ago. Despite all the success, Greece is not without risk. The debt-to-GDP ratio is still high, the nation continues to score poorly on the Corruption Perception Index despite recent advances and it has continuing problems with its neighbours in Turkey. The legal system is also a congested and inefficient mess. According to the EU Justice Scoreboard, it takes Greek courts over 600 days to conclude civil and commercial cases. By contrast, Denmark takes less than 20 days and most European countries take around 100 days. This means it can take years for a trial to reach a conclusion – assuming there is no appeal. These timelines slow down business, drive away foreign investment and leave parties impacted by court cases in a state of limbo. At its core, Greece faces poor demographics as well. The nation's fertility rate is roughly 1.3 births per woman, it suffered years of net emigration during the financial crisis and the median age, currently in the mid-40s, is climbing fast. This means that Greece's population, which peaked over a decade ago, is expected to fall in the decades ahead. Moreover, Greek society will get materially older; this will leave fewer working-age people to support retirees, health care infrastructure and pensions. All in all, however, Greece has more going for it than against it, and the turnaround over the past decade has been a resounding success. The outlook is positive and the GREK ETF could rally much further. We recently trimmed our position in GREK for a 109.2-per-cent gain. Locking in this profit recouped our initial investment but leaves plenty of skin in the game to benefit from future price appreciation. Today, GREK sports a yield of over 4 per cent and blends strong momentum with low stock valuations. These are excellent characteristics, especially when coupled with the underlying economic conditions. Our plan is to let the ETF run, look for valuations to increase further and sell the rest of our stake in slices. Once it is sold entirely, we will continue to avoid home-country bias, deploy the winnings in a new overseas investment and, with any luck, repeat the success.
