IIT-B's Spoken Tutorial to empower students from tier-2 and tier-3 cities in finding jobs

Indian Express18-06-2025
The Spoken Tutorial project, developed at the IIT Bombay, brought together industry and academic leaders to explore a more efficient future for finding jobs in India, at a panel discussion on challenges faced by students from tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
The discussion titled 'Hiring 2.0 in a Digital World', was part of the programme Education Technology for Nation Building held at Victor Menezes Convention Centre (VMCC) at IIT Bombay's campus in Mumbai's Powai.
The discussion focused on the need to move beyond traditional hiring practices like resumes, referrals, and job fairs, which often fail to serve those outside urban centers.
The panel included dignitaries such as Professor Kannan Moudgalya, inventor of Spoken Tutorial, Ashank Desai, chairman of Mastek, Prof Tara S Shaw of IIT Bombay, and Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer, EkStep Foundation.
In partnership with EkStep and Proofofskill, Spoken Tutorial piloted a model where students could create verified digital profiles using voice-based, local language skill assessments.
Employers, in turn, could act on these trusted signals—reducing hiring time to just 15 minutes. The organisers shared that the pilot was designed with inclusion at its core—supporting voice inputs, local languages, and formats for students from tier-2 and tier-3 towns.
'This is not about replacing what works, but digitising what doesn't,' said Professor Moudgalya, emphasising the model's potential to empower students and MSMEs alike.
Ashank Desai noted the strain MSMEs face during recruitment and how digital hiring can free up founders to focus on growth. With over 600 million working-age Indians, the panel called for urgent collaboration to scale inclusive hiring solutions.

Biased output, privacy violation, unauthorised data sharing due to AI can have serious ramifications for India Inc

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Mumbai: As India Inc rushes to adopt AI, internal auditors are sounding the alarm over a perceived lack of robust controls, ethical safeguards, and governance auditors are warning that many companies may be inadvertently exposing themselves to serious risks such as biased outputs, privacy violations, unauthorised data sharing, and opaque decision-making by AI models, potentially causing legal and financial liabilities, and operational are worried that boards and top management are largely unaware of the scale of AI experimentation taking place at the ground level in Indian companies.A Microsoft study showed that India's rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with 65% of surveyed Indians having used AI, is more than double the global average of 31%."Most organisations are using AI with the best intentions-whether for efficiency, productivity, faster time to market, staying ahead of the curve, or market defence. But, in their pursuit of these goals, governance may not have received as much attention," said Ritesh Tiwari, partner and national leader for governance, risk & compliance services at KPMG in said the biggest concern currently is the lack of adequate board-level engagement on the issue. "Ethical usage of AI has to be a boardroom topic. Without the top-down commitment, it's a ticking time bomb. One wrong deployment, one biased output-and the reputational damage could be massive," said Tiwari. "We do tests for bias where mandated, but in many companies, it's not yet part of their risk culture. That's something we're pushing to change."Globally, there have been several high-profile instances of AI failures, from Amazon's recruiting tool showing bias against women to Microsoft's Tay chatbot generating offensive content, Facebook's Cambridge Analytica data scandal, and McDonald's Drive-Thru AI Indian organisations become increasingly aware of the risks associated with AI deployments, they are also strengthening their oversight and governance mechanisms to manage these challenges."Organisations have now started to ask that internal audits specifically cover the AI adoption lifecycle, looking at everything from pre-development planning to post-deployment performance," said Sunil Bhadu, partner and India GRC leader at PwC India. "The focus is typically on the governance framework and policies, design compliance with industry standards, workflow integrity, and robust working processes to ensure that these models aren't hallucinating or generating misleading results."Internal auditors emphasise that Indian firms have to realise the value of building trustworthy AI by design. "With global incidents highlighting the risks, mature organisations are proactively seeking guidance on managing AI-related risks. They're turning to recent frameworks like the EU AI Act, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and Deloitte's own Trustworthy AI model, asking, can our systems be reviewed and benchmarked against these frameworks to ensure responsible development and deployment?" said Anthony Crasto, president, assurance at Deloitte South crucial factor in internal audits of AI models is cybersecurity and privacy, given AI systems often process sensitive personal and business data, using complex codebases, and can be vulnerable to adversarial attacks or prompt injection if not properly secured."From a security and privacy lens, we're also testing the algorithm logic, reviewing adherence to secure coding principles and business objectives, and data protection norms, and carrying out vulnerability assessments, etc. Data privacy is a growing area of concern," said Crasto. On their part, auditors are doing closer scrutiny of aspects like training, testing, and validation of these models, since flaws at the foundational stages could lead to biased, unreliable, or even unsafe outputs once deployed."We ask the companies: Is there a documented AI policy? Is it aligned with global frameworks? We assess the policy's treatment of privacy, security, responsibility, human-in-the-loop accountability, transparency, model bias and explainability," said Crasto.

India's digital ID boom raises AI and trust concerns: Okta 2025 report

Highlights82% of Indians find passwords convenient; 55% use fingerprints, 35% Face ID. 67% trust companies with personal data (vs. 50% global), yet 81% fear identity fraud (vs. 63% global). While 65% value AI's 24/7 support, 76% prefer humans and worry about AI's impact on digital identity. Indian consumers continue to rapidly adopt digital technologies while navigating unique challenges in trust and security, reveals the 2025 Customer Identity Trends Report from Okta, The World's Identity Company. The global study, conducted by Statista, surveyed 6,750 consumers across nine countries, including 750 from India, to explore evolving online identity behaviors. Passwords Still Rule, While Biometrics Gain Ground India's digital engagement is soaring, with over 30% of respondents logging into ten or more personal online accounts monthly. Despite newer options, 82% of Indians find passwords most convenient for identity verification. Over half the population (54%) find it convenient to use Government IDs like Aadhar for verification purposes, which is closely followed by SMS/voice calls at (44%). Security perceptions for fingerprints (79%) and SMS authentication (74%) closely trail passwords. However, a significant gap in secure habits remains as 1 out of 5 Indians reuse the same password for every personal account. The quest for easier logins is boosting biometrics, with 55% of Indian consumers using fingerprint recognition and 35% using Face ID. This highlights a growing willingness to adopt modern, secure authentication, especially from trusted brands. Trust in Businesses Soars, But Identity Fraud Concerns Persist Indian consumers show remarkable trust in companies to protect their personal data, with 67% expressing confidence, well above the 50% global average. This extends to a 50% likelihood of sharing personal data online. Trust levels are significantly higher than global averages across key sectors: 79% trust banks, 73% trust tech companies, 70% trust government agencies, and 69% trust online retailers. Despite this confidence, a substantial 81% of respondents are concerned about identity fraud, significantly higher than the 63% global average, indicating a heightened awareness of digital risks. 'AI is no longer a future concept—it is embedded in the way we live, work, and connect,' said Shakeel Khan, Regional Vice President and Country Manager, Okta India. 'From virtual assistants to automated decisions, people interact with AI every day. But with greater reliance comes greater scrutiny. Users expect their data to be protected and their experiences to be secure, simple, and transparent. That trust begins with identity. For businesses, mastering identity is no longer just about security; it's the strategic imperative that unlocks innovation and secures customer loyalty.' AI: Convenience vs. Human Touch and Identity Concerns Indian consumers demonstrate a complex relationship with AI. They are notably more willing to share sensitive data with company AI agents compared to global averages: 64% for health data (vs. 32% global) and 49% for financial information (vs. 27% global). While 65% appreciate AI's speed and 24/7 support, a strong 76% still prefer human representatives for better understanding, and an equal 76% worry about AI's impact on their digital identities. The population is split, with 49% preferring human interaction over AI agents (43%), and 19% express outright distrust. 54% say clear privacy/ethics guidelines would increase trust in AI agents, and 49% want transparency into how AI makes decisions. Ben Goodman, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Asia Pacific & Japan at Okta, added, 'In Asia Pacific, trust has become the true currency of digital engagement. From logins to AI agents, consumers are drawing a clear line: they want experiences that are seamless, secure, and respectful of their data. Businesses can no longer afford to treat identity as just an IT function; it's now the foundation of every meaningful digital interaction. When identity is done right, it becomes a catalyst for trust, innovation, and loyalty. When it's ignored, even the best AI strategies will fail to take off. The message is simple: trust starts at the identity layer and so must your strategy.' The Okta 2025 Customer Identity Trends Report highlights that businesses must skillfully navigate the evolving digital landscape by prioritizing security, enhancing user experience, and meeting dynamic consumer expectations.
