Amidst intermittent rain, the Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi procession arrived in Pimpri-Chinchwad around 5 pm on Thursday to a warm welcome from hundreds of people who had gathered at Bhakti Shakti Junction in Nigdi. The palkhi procession will take an overnight halt in Akurdi before leaving for Pandharpur on Friday morning.
The Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi procession took off from Dehu on Wednesday. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was present when the palkhi commenced its annual prilgrimage. After a day's halt, it started its onward journey on Thursday.

Both the palkhis will first reach Pune city by Friday afternoon and will take a day's rest before moving for its onward journey. During their halt in Pune city, the Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi will be stationed at Nivdunga Vithal temple while the Sant Dyanewshwar Maharaj Palkhi will rest at Vithoba temple
The Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi procession left Inamdar Wada in Dehu at its appointed hour of 10.30 am unmindful of the heavy drizzle. Special focus on Palkhi procession
With the Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram palkhi processions entering PCMC limits, civic teams are working in mission mode to ensure a smooth and safe passage for Warkaris, the PCMC administration said.
Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh has directed all departments to ensure 'zero waterlogging' along the Palkhi route.
A targeted cleanliness drive is underway, with special attention on stormwater chamber tops to avoid garbage-induced blockages. Emergency response units with mechanised equipment have been deployed at critical points across Bhosari, Dighi, and Nigdi, the civic administration said.

Ujani Dam records 85% live water storage

PUNE: Ujani Dam, a critical water source for Solapur district, has recorded 86% of live water storage capacity as of July 7 - an unprecedented figure for this time of the year. According to the Maharashtra Water Resources department, the dam currently holds 1304.79 million cubic metres (MCM) or 46.07 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of live storage. Traditionally, Ujani stores only about 10-20% of its capacity in July. However, early monsoon onset and above-normal rainfall in May and June, especially in upstream areas of the city, led to unusually high inflows from the Khadakwasla dam complex. (HT) Traditionally, Ujani stores only about 10-20% of its capacity in July. However, early monsoon onset and above-normal rainfall in May and June, especially in upstream areas of the city, led to unusually high inflows from the Khadakwasla dam complex. Despite the high levels, authorities have ruled out any significant water release for the next few days. This decision is particularly important given the ongoing Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage in Pandharpur, where lakhs of 'warkaris' (devotees) have gathered along the Chandrabhaga river. Raosaheb More, executive engineer of the Ujani Dam Project, said, 'The water level has reached 86%, but we are restricting outflows. As of now, we are releasing about 1,900 cusecs through the main canal, 900 cusecs via the tunnel, and 260 cusecs for lift irrigation schemes. There is no discharge through the spillway.' He informed that keeping in view the safety of the pilgrims who have gathered in Pandharpur for holy bath in Chandrabhaga, the project authorities have temporarily halted any large-scale releases to prevent downstream flooding or accidents. 'The situation is under continuous watch,' More added. With storage already robust and rainfall activity expected to intensify in the coming weeks, dam officials are maintaining controlled outflows while keeping emergency protocols ready. Unprecedented release On June 24, in a first, Ujani Dam discharged 50,000 cusecs of water as a flood-control measure, when the storage neared 75%. Dam officials had then described it as an 'unprecedented move', necessitated by heavy early-season inflows. 'Never before has Ujani seen such levels in June,' More stated.

Irrigation department releases water from Ujani dam to avoid flooding during arrival of palkhis

Pune: Heavy rain and a significant rise in water level in Ujani dam have prompted the irrigation department to release water into the Bhima river to prevent flooding at Pandharpur when both palkhis will reach this temple town early next month. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Sunday, the dam began discharging water at a rate of 10,000 cusecs, which went up to 20,000 cusecs in the afternoon and reached 30,000 cusecs on Monday. Ujani's stock was at 77% of its storage capacity on Monday. Officials from the irrigation department said the discharge was part of flood management and to keep some space in the dam to accommodate the inflow of water from upstream dams. By doing this, the department will be able to release water at a "controlled rate" and avoid flooding ahead of Ashadhi Ekadashi when lakhs of warkaris will visit Pandharpur and take a dip in the Bhima, they said. Sources said Pune revenue devision could face a challenge if heavy rain continued during Ashadhi Ekadashi, forcing the irrigation department to release water into the Bhima at a higher rate. As a precautionary step, the irrigation department has also been releasing water from Veer dam into the river for the last two days. Officials said the release from Ujani and Veer dams would be brought down in case of a drop in rainfall and inflow of water. Water stock in most dams in and around Pune has been on the rise since last week owing to good spells. Nazare dam, located in the arid Saswad-Purandar known for less rainfall, too has recorded a good rise in water stock since the beginning of the monsoon. The irrigation department has warned of the release from this dam into the Karha river as live storage has reached 92%. The irrigation department, in the backdrop of the ongoing palkhi processions, has alerted the local administrations in Pune, Satara and Solapur districts to take measures to stop people from venturing near the rivers and streams. The irrigation department has continued the discharge of water from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river, though the release has been reduced to a rate of 684 cusecs. Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar received around 25mm rain in the last 24 hours ending on Monday.

Pune: Several parts of Pune received light showers on Friday, against the India Meteorological Department's forecast of yellow alert. The break in heavy spell provided a breather to thousands of warkaris, who accompanied the annual Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar palkhis. They are headed to Pandharpur for the Ashadhi Ekadashi rituals. The ghat sections in the district continued to witness a significant spell, with Tamhini and Lonavla recording 370mm and 205mm rain respectively in 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Friday. Elsewhere, Kurvande recorded 129mm rain, followed by Girivan (160mm), Nimgiri (116mm), Bhor (109mm), Malin (69mm), and Talegaon (65.5mm). For Saturday, IMD has issued a yellow alert (moderate to heavy rain) for Pune. IMD has predicted "generally cloudy sky; light rain very likely". All the key stations in Pune recorded "light to moderate" rain in the 24 hours ending at 8.30pm on Friday. These locations included Shivajinagar (25.7mm), Pashan (33.8mm), Lohegaon (26.6mm), Chinchwad (35.5mm), Lavale (40.0mm), Magarpatta (31mm), and NDA (38mm). The irrigation department on Friday reduced the water discharge from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river to a rate of 7,800 cusecs from 15,000 cusecs on Thursday night. The release began with 2,000 cusecs on Thursday morning. The live water stock has been brought down to 70.5% of the dam's capacity. On Friday, the southwest monsoon further advanced into the remaining parts of Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, parts of west Uttar Pradesh, most parts of Uttarakhand, many parts of Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Ladakh, IMD officials said. A senior IMD official said, "Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at most places in the districts of Konkan-Goa, at a few places over south Madhya Maharashtra and at isolated places over north Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on Saturday." A number of weather systems are escalating the probability of rainfall, IMD said. They include a low-pressure area over south Bihar, an upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan, and a trough running from northwest Uttar Pradesh to the north Gujarat region across the above cyclonic circulation over northeast Rajasthan. IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into central and adjoining north, south Arabian Sea, northeast Arabian Sea along and off Gujarat-Maharashtra coast between June 20 and 24; along and off north Konkan coast on June 23. PMC clears choked drains Officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) drainage and road departments said that teams were busy clearing choked drains and accumulated water from various spots on Friday. People, however, said that the civic administration now faces the challenge of repairing potholes and resurfacing roads. Santosh Kadu, who often takes Apte Road, said that two drainage chambers were overflowing on Wednesday. "Though water has stopped flowing out from the chambers the condition of the road has worsened," Kadu said. PMC's water supply department has decided not to draw water from a well located at Barangani Mala in the Sinhagad Road area for the next couple of days as a precautionary measure following heavy spells of rain. A nullah in the area started overflowing on Wednesday. Additional water tankers are being pressed into service to cater to Dhayri, Sinhagad Road and Nanded. The civic administration plans to take up a cleaning drive in the well and nearby areas after which water lifting will begin again, officials said.
