‘Great time to focus on our farmers': Regina's 2nd annual tomato festival a hit
When the Regina Farmer's Market (RFM) started the tomato festival last year, they weren't sure it would turn out to be a success, but if the second edition is a sign of things to come, then there should be no worries. Dozens upon dozens of vendor tents lined the Queen Elizabeth II Gardens and Wascana Lake, and hundreds of patrons were in attendance during the festival on Saturday. The event also saw a tomato tasting contest for the second year in a row, with an esteemed judging panel that included Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski. However, the spirit of the event was to showcase some of Saskatchewan's producers of fresh produce, namely tomatoes. 'We are right in the peak season for our farmers market in the middle of the summer, we've got a lot of fresh produce coming in. It just seemed like a great time to focus on our farmers and our growers by celebrating something that's coming into season right now, and that's tomatoes,' explained Holly Laied, RFM's executive director. 'So, that's what we're doing here today, shining a light on them and the all the great work they do, bringing us some fresh, healthy, local food,' she added.
