History Today: How MTV redefined music with its launch
The history of music changed forever on August 1, 1981, with the launch of a new television channel called Music Television (MTV) in New York City. The launch took place at 12:01 am with the airing of the first music video - 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by The Buggles.

On this day in 1944, Anne Frank, the most famous diarist of the World War era, wrote her final diary entry. Just three days later, the Secret Annexe in Amsterdam was discovered and raided by Nazi authorities.
Here is all that happened on this day.
MTV was launched in New York City
'Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll,' were the words with which John Lack, one of the creators of MTV, launched the music channel on August 1, 1981. This was followed by the airing of The Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star at 12:01 am.
Prior to its arrival, music videos were largely promotional tools without a dedicated platform for widespread viewing. MTV changed this by offering 24/7 programming of music videos, introduced by a new breed of television personalities known as Video Jockeys (VJs). The original five VJs were Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, JJ Jackson, and Martha Quinn. They became instant celebrities, helping to shape the channel's early identity.

It transformed unknown artists into household names, heavily influencing fashion, language, and youth culture in the 1980s and beyond. Artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, and Duran Duran saw their careers explode thanks to high-rotation airplay on the network.
However, MTV also faced early criticism for lacking diversity in its music programming, which eventually shifted after public pressure and the breakthrough success of Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean.' Over the years, MTV expanded into reality television, pop culture shows, and award events, including the iconic MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) launched in 1984.

Anne Frank writes her last diary entry
Anne Frank wrote for the last time in her beloved diary on this day in 1944, just three days before she and the rest of the people hiding in the Secret Annexe were discovered and sent to concentration camps.
Anne's last entry in the diary, which she fondly called 'Kitty', doesn't speak of fear or doom but instead offers a deep reflection on her inner conflict. In it, she wrote about the contrast between her outward cheerful self and her more serious, anxious inner voice. She confessed to feeling torn between these two versions of herself, namely the playful girl others see and the thoughtful writer she longs to be. 'I know exactly how I'd like to be,' she wrote, 'how I am… on the inside. But unfortunately, I'm only like that for myself.'

This entry captures Anne's profound self-awareness and emotional maturity. Despite the terrifying conditions she endured, she remained introspective, hopeful, and eager to understand herself and the world around her.
After the arrest, Anne was eventually transported to Auschwitz and later to Bergen-Belsen, where she died of typhus in early 1945, just weeks before the camp was liberated. Otto Frank, Anne's father and the sole survivor of the eight people who hid in the annexe, later discovered her diary and published it with the title 'The Diary of a Young Girl' in 1945.

Did BTS Record A Michael Jackson Song For A Tribute Album?
Big Hit Music claimed that BTS never visited the studio in Ireland or took part in any recording for the album related to the Michael Jackson tribute. BTS fans were very excited recently when news of them recording a Michael Jackson song for a tribute album started spreading online. It was reported that Jin, Suga, J Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook had worked on the track last year. However, this turned out to be false, and it was septet's agency, Big Hit Music, who recently denied these reports. They said BTS never visited the studio in Ireland or took part in any recording for the album. The agency made it clear that the group is not involved in the tribute album in any way. Taking to X (Formerly Twitter), the agency wrote, 'We would like to address recent media reports concerning BTS's alleged participation in a Michael Jackson tribute album. BTS has neither visited Grouse Lodge Studio in Ireland nor taken part in any recording sessions at the location for the mentioned project. The group is not involved in the tribute album in any capacity. We are continuing to take appropriate measures to prevent the spread of inaccurate information. We express our sincere gratitude to fans for continuously showing support for BTS. We remain fully committed to supporting the artists and their endeavours." [공지] '방탄소년단의 마이클 잭슨 헌정 앨범 참여' 관련 안내 (+ENG) — BTS_official (@bts_bighit) August 5, 2025 Recently, Paddy Dunning, a former associate of Michael Jackson, shared that there are plans to bring new life to some of the singer's unreleased songs. These tracks were reportedly found in a storage unit and had never been shared with the public before. Speaking with The Irish Sun, he said, 'The sessions started last year and we have already had the Korean boy band BTS over with us in Grouse Lodge, recording one of the songs. There's about ten more, written especially for Michael by the collaborators he worked with in Ireland, including producer Rodney Jerkins and rapper Nephew, who have signed up for the project." Paddy Dunning further shared that he had a conversation with Michael Jackson's estate and got their approval to move forward with the release of an unreleased song and a documentary. The documentary will show Michael's time in Ireland, where he enjoyed special moments with his three children. Paddy mentioned that the estate supports the project because they also see it as a respectful way to honour Michael's memory. Currently, BTS is in the USA, where they are busy working on their comeback album. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. BIGHIT shuts down BTS–Michael Jackson collab rumours: ‘Not involved in any capacity'
The internet lit up yesterday with reports claiming BTS had recorded a track for a posthumous Michael Jackson tribute album, but those rumours have now been shut down for good. BTS Fans of the global K-pop sensation were initially stunned, then divided, over claims that BTS had visited Grouse Lodge Studio in Ireland to record one of Michael Jackson's unreleased tracks. The rumour, which came from an interview with studio owner Paddy Dunning, sparked backlash from those unfamiliar with BTS' long-documented admiration for Jackson. But as the story picked up steam, BigHit Music stepped in to set the record straight. 'Hello, This is BIGHIT MUSIC. We would like to address recent media reports concerning BTS' alleged participation in a Michael Jackson tribute album. We remain fully committed to supporting the artists and their endeavours. Thank you,' said the statement. How did the rumour start? On August 3, a well-known Michael Jackson fan site MJ Vibe reported that Paddy Dunning, who owns the Grouse Lodge studio in Ireland, had told The Irish Sun that BTS had allegedly visited the studio to record a track for an upcoming tribute album, which features unreleased songs Jackson worked on during his stay in Ireland. According to the report, the song dates back to 2006, when Jackson was working on music that never saw the light of day. 'The sessions started last year and we have already had the Korean boy band BTS over with us in Grouse Lodge, recording one of the songs,' Dunning was quoted as saying. He added that ten more unreleased tracks, created during Jackson's time in Ireland with collaborators like Rodney Jerkins and Nephew, are expected to be part of the project. Alongside the music, Dunning mentioned a documentary that's being planned to honour Jackson's quiet years in Ireland with his children. 'Michael's estate told me to plough ahead with this because, like me, they see it as a tribute to Michael. And for the documentary, we're going to get everyone's memories of working with Michael in Ireland," he shared. He also recalled meeting Jackson's son Prince in the US and said that the Jackson children — Prince, Paris, and Blanket — had fond memories of their time at Grouse Lodge and hoped to visit again. While the tribute project itself remains a mystery for now, one thing is certain: BTS are not involved!

Donald Trump Makes American Eagle Great Again As Hottest Praise For Sydney Sweeney Sends Stocks Soaring
Shares of American Eagle Outfitters surged by 23% on Monday, August 4, following praise from US President Donald Trump for the company's new denim campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. The Ad With Great Jeans The ad features the Euphoria actress in American Eagle jeans and a denim jacket, delivering a pun-laden line, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My jeans are blue." The camera then zooms in on her blue eyes. View this post on Instagram A post shared by American Eagle (@americaneagle) While the ad raked up its own share of storms, the brand doesn't seem to be complaining. Casting Sydney Sweeney in the controversial ad, after all, saw the brand's stocks go soaring. American Eagle's Revenue Drop In May, American Eagle withdrew its financial guidance citing "macro uncertainty" and forecasting a 5% drop in revenue. The company reported an $85 million operating loss in Q1, with gross margins falling sharply from 40.6% to 29.6%. Despite the weak financials, a single ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney sent the brand's stocks soaring. Following the campaign, shares jumped 28% in premarket trading, adding nearly $200 million to the company's market value in only one session, Vanity Fair reported. The campaign initially generated a 10% stock bump when it launched in July. All That's Not So Great About The Ad The ad soon went viral. People criticised it for evoking eugenics and white supremacist undertones, pointing to its focus on "genes" and the casting of a blonde-haired, blue-eyed actress. Social media users accused American Eagle of invoking Nazi-era language around "great genes" and reinforcing Western beauty standards. Enter Donald Trump The ad made more waves after Trump endorsed the campaign in a Truth Social post on Monday. "Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get 'em, Sydney!" Trump also used the moment to drag pop star Taylor Swift, whom he previously criticised for endorsing former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 US presidential campaign. "Woke singer Taylor Swift" is 'NO LONGER HOT'," Trump wrote. This endorsement quickly fuelled a surge of interest from his supporters and retail traders, sending American Eagle shares sharply upward. Trump "Loves" Sydney Sweeney's Ad Earlier on Sunday, Trump spoke about the campaign while he was boarding Air Force One from Allentown, Pennsylvania, US. "She's a registered Republican? Oh, now I love her ad," he told reporters, "If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic." What American Eagle Said About The Ad American Eagle also released a statement defending the campaign: "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone." View this post on Instagram A post shared by American Eagle (@americaneagle) American Eagle Outfitters is a US-based clothing and accessories retailer founded in 1977 and headquartered in Pittsburgh. Known for its denim and casual wear, the brand targets teens and young adults with affordable, trend-driven fashion. While the brand had almost faded into oblivion with dropping stocks, it seems like a Sydney Sweeney ad, a controversy, and an endorsement from the sitting President of the United States is all it needed to be great again.
