PNB said to be exploring sale of Prolintas in deal worth up to RM3 billion
Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that PNB is working with a financial adviser on the potential divestment and has reached out to industry players and private equity firms to gauge interest.
The discussions are still ongoing and PNB could ultimately decide to retain Prolintas, the sources said.
In an emailed statement to Bloomberg, PNB said it regularly reviews its portfolio for opportunities to enhance value, including through divestments or strategic repositioning.
'As a long-term investor committed to delivering sustainable returns, PNB regularly reviews its investment portfolio for opportunities to enhance value, including potential divestments or strategic repositioning,' it reportedly said.
'All decisions are guided by a rigorous governance process aligned with our investment objectives."
PNB was also reported saying that it does not comment on market speculation or rumours, and any material developments would be announced through the appropriate channels in line with regulatory requirements.
According to Bloomberg data, merger and acquisition activity involving Malaysian companies has slumped about 46 per cent so far this year compared to the same period in 2024, with total deal value at around US$4.2 billion (RM19.7 billion).
Established in 1995, Prolintas is fully owned by PNB and operates several expressways in the Klang Valley. Its listed unit, Prolintas Infra Business Trust Bhd, which holds some of the toll highway assets, has a market value of about RM1.1 billion.
Prolintas also uses artificial intelligence and machine-learning systems to improve safety and operational efficiency.

Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the Halal Industry Development Council (MPIH), said the move would help New Zealand tap into ASEAN's halal market, with Malaysia acting as a strategic base. 'While in Wellington, I took the opportunity to push for deeper halal collaboration between Malaysia and New Zealand. My focus was on promoting ASEAN halal products into the Asia-Pacific. 'Currently, two organisations in New Zealand have already received halal certification recognition from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) for exports to Malaysia. 'I've now opened the door for them to use Malaysia as a hub for distributing New Zealand's halal products to ASEAN. I've also suggested they take part in MIHAS,' he said during a press conference after the Malaysia–New Zealand Halal Forum. Also present were New Zealand's Minister for Biosecurity and Food Safety, Andrew Hoggard, and Malaysia's High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki. Ahmad Zahid added that Malaysia would use the MIHAS platform to announce the formation of the ASEAN Halal Council, comprising all Southeast Asian nations. He said halal certifying bodies endorsed by Jakim would also be invited to join the ASEAN Halal Plus Council to harmonise regional halal standards. During the forum, Ahmad Zahid witnessed the exchange of letters of intent between Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and the University of Canterbury (UC), aimed at strengthening cooperation in chemical and process engineering, halal food technology, and sustainable development. Ahmad Zahid also dismissed concerns that Jakim's stringent halal procedures would be an obstacle for New Zealand businesses. He explained that Jakim had already authorised two local halal bodies in New Zealand to handle certification, removing the need for companies to go through Jakim directly. 'Jakim will continue periodic audits to ensure compliance with the standards. But I see no issues — I had discussions this morning with the two associations already certified by Jakim and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS),' he said. New Zealand's halal exports to Malaysia surpassed NZ$60 million (RM151 million) last year, driven largely by premium halal meat products.

Malaysia to miss fiscal deficit target this year, says BMI

(Envato Elements pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will likely miss its fiscal deficit target this year, as spending is seen exceeding projections and revenue may fall, according to BMI, a Fitch Solutions company. 'Malaysia's budget gap will narrow to 4% of gross domestic product (GDP) from 4.1% last year,' BMI said in a report. Advertisement 'That misses the official target of 3.8% of GDP and will delay policymakers' goal of bringing down the deficit to 3% by 2028,' it added. A failure to meet the target would be a setback for Malaysia, which has the highest credit rating among developing nations in Southeast Asia. On July 8, S&P Global Ratings warned that tariffs and trade wars have increased risks for Asia-Pacific sovereign ratings. BMI forecasted revenue to amount to 16.4% of GDP in 2025, down from 16.8% in 2024, as subdued economic activity limits tax collection. BMI has predicted that economic growth will moderate to 4.2% this year. 'That compares with the official forecast of 4.5% to 5.5% economic growth, which is under review. 'Petroleum-related revenue is also expected to undershoot the budget,' it said. The government will see more pressure to further subsidise utility costs following the 14% increase in electricity tariffs that took effect July 1, according to BMI. 'There have also been scant details about the government's plans to cut subsidies for RON95, the country's most popular gasoline,' it noted. Penang's Mutiara LRT Line kicks off with road widening, utility works planned at multiple locations
GEORGE TOWN, July 17 — Construction works on the Mutiara Line LRT project here are set to begin following the issuance of a notice to commence work. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the notice was issued on July 15 by MRT Corporation (MRTC) to the main civil contractor, SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd. 'With this, the construction process will begin as planned, including utility relocation, road widening, piling works, and site establishment at all locations along the Mutiara Line alignment that have obtained approval from the relevant authorities,' he said in a statement today. He said the state is now awaiting the tender results for the appointment of a turnkey contractor for the CMC2 package, which covers the stretch from Macallum to Penang Sentral, as well as the rail systems package for the Mutiara Line. Chow added that there have been several key developments in the project, including the groundbreaking ceremony, the appointment of SRS as the main civil contractor for the CMC1 package in January, and the issuance of the Notice to Proceed to SRS. 'The state will be announcing the setting up of a strategic communication platform and feedback channel for all ongoing and upcoming mega projects to allow the public to access information and for further engagement,' he said. He called on all parties, especially the public, to give their full cooperation throughout the implementation of the project, which is expected to be completed by 2031.
