Maya Ali tears up in memory of her father

Express Tribune07-02-2025
During her trip to Australia in support of Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital's Fundraising Gala, Maya Ali took to the stage to share a poignant reminder about those grieving the loss of their loved ones. In a carousel shared by Instagram digital creator Afia Qazi on Thursday, Maya shed tears in memory of her late father, who passed away in 2016.
"I lost my father too, though not because of cancer," she began, before pausing to quell her tears. Referring to the individual who spoke before her, she added, "When this father was speaking about his struggles, all I could think of was that the pain for his child was so great that it even shattered a man."
The Yunhi actor observed that men are usually expected to put up a strong front, even when they are breaking. "A child's agony hurts both parents equally," she said. "I might not have the right words to laud your strength. I'm sorry. I feel like the longer we discuss your child's health, the more we hurt you."
While Maya may not know a father's pain, she does understand a daughter's pain all too well. Despite losing her father years ago, the memory is still fresh in her mind and affects her anytime she's reminded of it.
In November 2024, she remembered him on his death anniversary with a simple yet gut-wrenching Instagram Story. "Baba," she wrote in Urdu against a black backdrop, punctuating her text with a heartbreak emoji.
Back in 2022, she penned a note on his death anniversary. "November 1," she began. "No matter what happens, this date has changed for me forever, and maybe has changed me along with it. Nothing can bring you back to me. Baba, I miss you every day, every moment, and every second." She ended her note with a polite request to her followers, "Please recite Surah Fateha and remember him in your prayers."

American Eagle defends Sydney Sweeney campaign amid eugenics accusations

American Eagle has addressed the controversy surrounding its fall 2025 campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney, following widespread online backlash and confusion over the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.' The viral campaign sparked debate after a clip showed Sweeney saying, 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring… My jeans are blue.' The wordplay between 'genes' and 'jeans' ignited accusations online that the ad promoted a subtle racial message or even eugenics. Critics, particularly on TikTok, claimed the combination of Sweeney's blue eyes, blonde hair, and scripted dialogue made the campaign a 'racialized dog whistle.' In response, American Eagle issued a statement on Instagram: 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.' While some condemned the campaign as tone-deaf, others defended Sweeney and the brand, dismissing the outrage as overblown. 'Y'all are mad at Sydney Sweeney because she's white, she's blonde, she's blue-eyed and she looks good,' said one TikTok user, capturing the divide in public sentiment. Sweeney has not commented publicly. She continues to dominate Hollywood with roles in Euphoria, The White Lotus, and the upcoming Christy, while also expanding her business ventures. Recent endorsements include Armani Beauty, Miu Miu, and a reported lingerie brand backed by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez. Baskin-Robbins, one of her brand partners, has since disabled comments on TikTok videos featuring the actress amid the controversy.

Love you so much babii." The Hit Man star also praised Momoa's latest project, the Apple TV+ historical drama Chief of War, which premiered the same day. "Excited for the world to watch what you've poured your heart and soul into for the past years," she added. Fans responded warmly to the post, calling the couple 'beautiful' and praising their chemistry. Momoa himself commented, 'Te amo mi amor. Luckiest man alive.' The couple made their relationship public in May 2024 when Momoa shared photos of them together during a trip to Japan. Since then, they've frequently appeared in affectionate posts on social media. Chief of War, a nine-part series starring and co-created by Momoa, focuses on true events in Polynesian history and features a predominantly Polynesian cast. The first two episodes are now streaming, with new episodes released weekly. Adding to the buzz, Momoa recently shaved his iconic beard for the first time in over six years, ahead of filming Dune: Part Three. In a video shared online, he dedicated the transformation to director Denis Villeneuve. Momoa was previously married to actress Lisa Bonet, with whom he shares two children. Bonet filed for divorce in early 2024, officially ending their marriage.
