Man loses 8L in city's first mobile malware cyber fraud
Lucknow: Lucknow recorded its first case of mobile malware cyber fraud on Friday when a Nishatganj resident alleged that he was duped of Rs 8.70 lakh. Though the crime took place on July 20, the case was lodged only on Friday. Cyber experts said mobile malware cyber fraud is often referred to as an APK (Android Package Kit) scam or remote access trojan (RAT) attack. According to a complaint filed with the Cyber Crime Police Station, the victim received a call on his mobile on July 20 from an unknown number regarding Aadhaar card upgradation. Subsequently, an APK file named " was sent on his WhatsApp, which he downloaded and installed. Shortly after, the victim alleged that his mobile phone was hacked, enabling unauthorised access to his private savings account. Using his debit card, five separate fraudulent transactions were carried out on the same day: Rs 1.99 lakh, Rs 1.99 lakh, Rs 1.98 lakh, Rs 1.50 lakh, and Rs 1.23 lakh. The total siphoned amount stands at Rs 8.70 lakh. The victim also lodged a complaint via the National Cyber Crime Helpline (1930). Former IPS and cyber expert Triveni Singh said: "Once the victim unknowingly installs the app, it silently grants the attacker remote access to the phone—allowing them to read SMS, intercept OTPs, monitor screen activity, and operate banking apps." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Singh said these APKs look harmless but contain embedded code that compromises mobile devices. "They are capable of stealing debit/credit card data, reading SMS and OTPs, recording your screen activity, accessing internet banking apps, and sometimes even locking your phone," he said.

ED arrests accused in Falcon scam under PMLA
1 2 Hyderabad: Enforcement Directorate Thursday arrested Sandeep Kumar , operations head of Capital Protection Force Private Ltd and younger brother of company's chairman and managing director Amardeep Kumar. He was taken into custody under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Sources said Sandeep failed to cooperate with the ED regarding the funds received from the fraudulent scheme and was evasive during questioning. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody on Friday. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) had initially arrested Sandeep, who had earlier fled to Dubai, on June 4 while reportedly returning to India illegally via Nepal. Sandeep allegedly played a key role in the scam by overseeing the operations of Capital Protection Force, the company at the centre of the Falcon invoice discounting racket. CID has, so far, registered three cases under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Telangana Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishments Act. Investigators allege the accused created fictitious transactions to divert hundreds of crores of rupees. Earlier, three luxury cars worth Rs 2.5 crore were seized by the police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo The ED has also begun attaching properties linked to the scam. The ED investigation has revealed that Amardeep was the mastermind behind the scam, and he developed Falcon invoice app to receive deposits from the investors. The app was widely advertised on platforms such as Google, YouTube, and other social media to attract investors. Amardeep remains on the run, even as enforcement agencies intensified efforts to trace and recover siphoned funds.

ED probe unravels sheep scam-illegal betting app link
Hyderabad: In a twist to the unfolding sheep rearing development scheme (SRDS) scam, Enforcement Directorate has found fresh evidence linking the massive financial fraud to an illegal online betting application. During recent searches, ED officials seized documents and material suggesting that govt funds meant for poor farmers were laundered through over 200 suspected mule or dummy accounts tied to the betting network. The seizure, made from one of the premises that was searched by the ED, included blank chequebooks, passbooks, debit cards, 31 used mobile phones, and more than 20 SIM cards, all suspected to have been used in facilitating these illegal activities. The ED carried out searches on July 30 at eight locations in Hyderabad under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The probe focuses on large-scale misappropriation of public funds allocated under the SRDS. Investigators estimate the total scam could be of as high as Rs 1,000 crore. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad According to the ED, substantial payments were made to multiple individuals and entities claiming to supply sheep to beneficiaries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo However, most of these recipients were never involved in the sheep business before the scheme began and, in fact, never delivered any sheep at all. Funds were fraudulently diverted to bogus vendors, with no real transactions taking place. Searches were conducted at the residence of G Kalyan Kumar, OSD to former animal husbandry minister Talasani Srinivasa Yadav, as well as several middlemen and alleged beneficiaries. An FIR by the Anti Corruption Bureau accused Kalyan of breaking into the department's office and taking away official records after the change of govt. Another FIR, lodged by a sheep merchant, alleged that Rs 2.1 crore owed for supplied sheep units was siphoned off by departmental assistant directors and diverted to unrelated accounts. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) audit report for the year ending March 2021 flagged grave irregularities, including lack of beneficiary-wise records, fake transportation invoices, duplicate tags issued for sheep units, disbursements to dead or non-existent individuals and use of non-transport vehicles for alleged transportation. The audit, which covered seven of Telangana's 33 districts, pegged the loss at Rs 253 crore. Scaled to all districts, the total loss could surpass ₹1,000 crore, sources said. The ED investigation not only corroborates the CAG's findings but also uncovered evidence of 'recycled' sheep units—where the same livestock was shown as delivered multiple times to fraudulently claim govt payments.
