Genelia D'Souza reacts to 2012 rumours of marrying John Abraham on Force set.
Genelia D'Souza has finally addressed one of the strangest rumours from her career — claims that she and co-star John Abraham were 'accidentally" married during the shoot of their 2011 action film Force.
In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, the actress cleared the air, debunking the bizarre story that had sparked wild speculation back in 2012. According to the rumour, a real priest had been brought on set to perform a wedding scene between the two actors — complete with rituals like mantras, garlands, the mangalsutra, and even the seven pheras — supposedly resulting in a legal marriage.
Reacting to it all, Genelia said, 'There was no truth to it. We didn't get married. These stories were spread by PR, and I think you should ask them why they did it."
The Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na star made it clear that the buzz had no basis in reality and was entirely manufactured by PR machinery. Despite how viral the story became at the time, Genelia maintained that neither she nor John Abraham had anything to do with fuelling the narrative. Today, Genelia is happily married to actor Riteish Deshmukh. The two tied the knot in 2012 and are now parents to two children. John is married to Priya Runchal.
Ahead of its release, the actress sat for an interview and talked about her decision to take a 10-year break from acting and the limelight after her marriage to Riteish Deshmukh.
During a conversation with Zoom, Genelia said, 'Most people ask me if it's easy to step away from the limelight for 10 years and I said, 'It's what I wanted to do, so I did it.' I saw a place after 10 years and I am happy in that place. I may not do 10 films, I may do three films, but my happiness is with that and that's what matters the most."
Genelia took a break from acting in 2012 after tying the knot with Riteish. She made her acting comeback with the Marathi film Ved. Released in 2022, the film was directed by Riteish himself and turned out to be a hit. However, the actress made cameo appearances in films like Jai Ho and Force 2.

Marathi cinema made a strong mark at the 71st National Film Awards for 2023 by winning several important honours. One big winner was Aatmapamphlet, directed by newcomer Ashish Bende, who received the Best Debut Film of a Director award. The film stood out not just because of Ashish's impressive work behind the camera, but also because it was the first Marathi movie to bring together three big names like Zee Studios, Aanand L Rai and Bhushan Kumar. After the win, Rai praised Ashish's dedication. He added that this success proved personal stories have great power and said he felt lucky to support Ashish at the start of his career. It's A Lasting Joy For Anand L Rai As per Times Now, Rai mentioned, 'There is tremendous pride and lasting joy in watching a debutant filmmaker find his voice. To see Ashish win the National Award for Best Debut Director for Aatmaphaplet is joy in its purest form. It is the kind of moment that reaffirms why we built Colour Yellow to take creative risks, back new talent, and let the most heartfelt stories speak loudly. Today, Ashish has strengthened my belief that the most powerful stories are often the most personal. I feel incredibly fortunate that we could play a small part in his beginning. I extend my most sincere gratitude to the esteemed jury and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for this humbling recognition. Receiving this honour is a moment of great pride for all of us who believe in the power of sincere storytelling." What Else For Marathi Film Industry? Along with Aatmapamphlet, Naal 2, directed by Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti, also won the Best Children's Film award. Both films received Swarna Kamal and a cash prize of Rs 3 Lakh each. Another winner was Shyamchi Aai, which was named the Best Marathi Feature Film, directed by Sujay Dahake. That's not all, child actors from Naal 2, Treesha Thosar, Shrinivas Pokale and Bhargav Jagtap, took home the Best Child Artist award, along with Kabir Khandare from Gypsy. Although Ashish Bende's film was made on a minimal budget, it was screened at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival in 2023. The film received a loud and cheerful response from the audience. First Published: August 02, 2025, 12:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Exclusive! Genelia Deshmukh on the role of South cinema in shaping her career and her thoughts on love stories

Genelia Deshmukh After over a decade of consciously stepping back from the spotlight following the 2012 release of Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya to focus on family life, Genelia Deshmukh is embracing a new chapter — one shaped by motherhood, maturity, and a rekindled love for cinema. In a conversation with BT, the actress, who was recently seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, opens up about evolving with time, the role of South cinema in shaping her career, and why mature roles need more screen time. 'Riteish and I continue to do things that we always enjoyed doing together' Genelia, who has been married to Riteish Deshmukh for 13 years, says marriage evolves with time. She shares, 'A lot changes post marriage. People forget that you're going to change at 30, 40 and 50. You're not going to be 20 all your life, and I think that's the issue in most relationships. You expect the person to stay the way they were at 16. Riteish and I know we aren't in our 20s, but we continue to do things that we always enjoyed doing together. We liked going out for dinners a lot, but with children around, it gets tough. So, once a week, we go to a coffee shop, hold hands and talk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was The Dream Girl In The 1980s, Here She Is Now. Boite A Scoop Undo That's our idea of romance.' 'Earlier, the perception was that Bollywood dropouts make it big in the South' Today, pan-India films are seeing actors from Bollywood being cast alongside South actors. Genelia, who made her film debut in 2003 with Tujhe Meri Kasam, did South films from the early days of her career. About the current pan-India trend, she says, 'I don't know why it took so long. I did it very early in my career, and I did it with pride. I just wanted to do good films; it was never about pitching one above the other. Earlier, the perception was that Bollywood dropouts make it big in the South. I've done some of my best work there. I thought my first film would be my last, and then I would take up a 9-5 job. But then I got a lot of work in the South and started falling in love with acting because of South cinema.' Talking about her break from movies, she says, 'During the last 10 years, I did special appearances whenever my friends asked me to. I also did Trial Period, which was an OTT project and Mister Mummy. I am happy that a film like Sitaare Zameen Par came my way.' 'I'm a different person now, but I still have that madness in me' Genelia admits that this phase of her career feels different from her early years in the industry. 'I'm a different person now, but I still have that madness in me. I'll always want to keep the child in me alive. At the start of your career, you have to make sure you do things that really work. Now, I want to do a horror film. I want to do action. It all depends on what filmmakers are writing and what you are being offered,' she says. ' Love stories aren't just for the young' The actress is hopeful the industry keeps pace with changing narratives and embraces more mature female characters. She says, 'I wish we would write more stories about women who are in their 30s, 40s or 50s. There are so many dynamics to that, which is interesting. Love stories aren't just for the young. Why isn't there a love story of a 30-year-old girl or a single mother? Love doesn't happen only when you are in college. I don't think I could play a good mom on screen if I weren't a mom in real life. I think you bring nuances to the screen when you actually live it. Which is why I say that actors should be cast as per the demand of the role and not because of their Instagram following or because they are number one, two or three.'
