League of Ireland top scorer Moses Dyer rejects Derry City approach
LEAGUE OF IRELAND top scorer Moses Dyer has rejected an initial approach from Derry City.
The 42 understands that the the Candystripes activated a buyout clause in the Galway United striker's contract in the last few days.
However, the New Zealand international has turned down the chance to join Tiernan Lynch's men and it remains to be seen if they will continue their pursuit of the 28-year-old.
Derry are currently in fourth place, and while they are 11 points off league leaders Shamrock Rovers they do have two games in hand.

Dyer has been one of the finds of the season for John Caulfield's Galway side and has scored 10 times so far this term.
A straight red card on Monday for his part in an altercation with Sligo Rovers defender John Mahon means Dyer will now likely face a three-game suspension, starting with the visit of champions Shelbourne this Friday.

New League of Ireland star finalising Irish eligibility as rise continues
SLIGO ROVERS MANAGER John Russell has confirmed that Owen Elding is in the process of finalising his eligibility for the Republic of Ireland. And the Bit O'Red boss revealed a number of clubs are interested in the 19-year-old who has taken the League of Ireland by storm this season. Elding scored his eighth goal in the Premier Division on Friday after producing a sensational 35-yard strike with his left foot in the 1-1 draw with Bohemians. The teenager scored a similarly spectacular effort away to champions Shelbourne last month and such eye-catching moments are just part of the reason why Sligo have a job on their hands to keep him. The club do at least have the comfort of knowing that Elding signed a contract until the end of 2027, and Russell confirmed there is no release clause so the Bit O'Red are in a relatively strong position. 'It's important as a club that we move forward and get proper fees for our talents if we're developing them. And I think whoever does eventually prise Owen away from the club, it'll be a hell of a fee,' the manager said. Advertisement THAT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD FROM OWEN ELDING🤩 Sligo Rovers lead in Dalymount thanks to the boy wonder. — League of Ireland (@LeagueofIreland) June 27, 2025 'Obviously the window opens July 1st. There's a lot of clubs interested. I'm sure there was a lot here [on Friday]. And when a 19-year-old kid is doing what he's doing, there's always going to be bids coming in. So we'll just have to wait and see. 'He's a real talisman for a kid so young. And I love his mentality. He wants to win, but he wants to get on the ball and demands it. He's orchestrating things with other players. He has a really good game understanding. He's just getting better and better, and as long as we have him, we've got a chance of winning matches. 'I don't want to be losing on him. He's doing unbelievable this year. And I think for his own development, having a full season is good for him. 'He's playing, he's confident, he's enjoying his football. Sometimes you can get distracted and end up going somewhere. And then they might be loaning out or you're training with a team that you might necessarily be playing games. 'It's all about playing now and for me he's got to be up for Young Player of the Year. I'd love to see him be standing at the end of the season in Team of the Year, Young Player of the Year and getting the recognition for the talent that he has, and also pulling us out of the position that we're in. 'Every game he's demanding the ball. He's looking to make things happen. His defensive work is top class and I want to keep my best players,' Russell continued. 'It's incredible. His technique is off the charts, like, and he's been honing that for the last couple of years. He works hard, he stays after training and practicing. It's no coincidence then when the lights come on, on a Friday or Saturday night, he's producing the goods.' Stop whatever you're doing and appreciate this moment of greatness from Owen Elding!😮 Game on in Tolka. Goal of the season? — League of Ireland (@LeagueofIreland) May 23, 2025 Born in England but raised in Sligo after his father, Anthony, signed for the club in 2013 and decided to stay in Ireland to raise his family, Elding also looks set to feature for Ireland at underage level in the not-too-distant future. 'I would have flagged this a while back. The stuff going on in the background, trying to get him nationalised. He's been in the country since he was 11 years of age,' Russell said. 'He's been here and I think there's talk in the background. Hopefully that will be resolved. He should be in that 21s squad. 'I think it's just a bit of paperwork that the FAI have to organise. I'm led to believe that it's close. I think for everyone it would be good if it happens soon.'

Omens are good that Damien Duff will be back
In the days following Damien Duff's abrupt departure from Shelbourne, the focus was on what the effect might be on the League of Ireland. Duffer's Stardust had propelled it to the back and occasionally, the front pages. And while the surge in popularity over the last few years feels like it is sustainable, there's no doubt that this is a setback for a league that was only getting used to being the centre of the national sporting conversation. But whatever about what's next for the league, one wonders what will be the next step for Duff? Even allowing for his interview on Shels' in-house channel two days before his resignation, where he lamented the fact that all the energy had to come from him, his decision last Sunday still felt hasty and impulsive, the sort of thing he may have been regretting in the car as he drove back to Wicklow. Damien Duff. Pic: Michael P Ryan/Sportsfile His exit, just two weeks before a massive Champions League local derby against Linfield, created loads of memes about the fact that Duff leaves once the going gets tough, which is a little unfair, considering where he has brought this club over the past three and a half years. But his track record of hasty retreats from Ireland, Celtic and now Shels does not make for good reading. There may have been different reasons for each departure, but it may give any ambitious chairman of a Championship club in England pause for thought if they were thinking of appointing the Ireland legend. Duff has always claimed that he wants to remain in Ireland, but that he could also never see himself managing another team in the league. Damien Duff. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile So, that just leaves Shelbourne as his only avenue back into management. Over the past few years, Duffer has proven to be impossible to second-guess. But if he regrets his decision last Sunday, might there be a way back for him at Tolka Park? Maybe this decision was not final. A European showdown with the champions of the North, a winnable tie even for a Shelbourne team who have been struggling for form, and then Europe might open up into an odyssey. It is just the sort of thing that could make Duff have second thoughts. Perhaps, where he will end up next is the place he left so abruptly last Sunday? Stranger things have happened.

Ballymena United follow ex-Shelbourne defender signing with Finn Harps raid
Ballymena United have snapped up defender Joel Thompson from Finn Harps, with the ink barely dry on the contract of former Shelbourne full-back David Toure. Toure has signed for the NIFL Premiership side from Glenavon, just 18 months after his arrival there from League of Ireland champions Shelbourne. A number of clubs on both sides of the Irish Sea were chasing the 20-year-old, according to Ballymena. Toure said: 'From the outside looking in I could see this was a squad that's improving and it was a no brainer really. I spoke to a few lads already here and they love it. 'I've had a good season and a half in the league and have a good grasp of it.' Click this link or scan the QR code to receive the latest League of Ireland news and top stories from the Irish Mirror. Meanwhile, former Crusaders man Thompson (19) has signed a 'multi-year' deal at the Ballymena Showgrounds. A former Nottingham Forest prospect, he had a spell at Colchester before moving to Finn Harps. He said: 'I'm buzzing, really delighted to be here. I spoke to Jim (Ervin) a few times about his plans and the players he has here already and it's exciting the experience the squad has. 'I'm here to come in and play. We have high hopes for this season, we want to push up the league and go on a few cup runs. 'I loved my time at Finn Harps, played plenty of games and it was really my first full season of men's football and I was ready for it.'
