She was recently seen in the highly-acclaimed series Khauf and in an exclusive interview with Firstpost, spoke about her prep, the world of the show, and the significance of the moniker.

Khauf has received some fabulous reviews. What are the responses that you have been receiving so far about the show, the content, the performance, everything?
I think everybody is very, very happy. And I think everybody saw something, I'll not say binge worthy is the word, but something which is so layered and which is so dense, and it engages you. And I think it is so raw and real. Smita, Pankaj, and I think all the actors, we have tried to achieve this. We tried to do it, and I think we achieved it. People are just surprised. You know, even we were surprised. Amazon is surprised.
We were not expecting this kind of response from Khauf. But it did very well for us. So I'm very happy. I'm very happy that people like it, and I'm so happy to be very honest, that in this day and age where we say key attention span is less. Where we say people don't want to engage in meaningful content, where we say people just want to see this, funny one liner content. People here are willing to sit down and engage with something that is cerebral. So I think I'm very happy with this response.

So how was the prep for this character?
So, when I auditioned for it, and since then, I think there's only one person who I've been drowning with my questions and that is Smita. The whole credit goes to Smita because it was written so well. And then everything I wanted to know about this character, where is her journey, whatever, I think I would. I just would pick up a call and call her and she would just help me with it. Other than that, for my personal prep, I do what majorly every actor does, getting more into the character, understanding her life choices, her world view, where she is coming from.
And I am the kind of actor who does back stories. I know it is looked down upon, and people are not very, you know, they like few actors, they think that why do we need a back story? I mean, to each its own. Right? It's your own individual process. So for me, I have this whole thing of going with the backstory. I met the guy who's playing my husband. I've done one theatre play with him, so I knew him from before. So we met a couple of times, and then we narrowed, we started digging into life. Why are we on such bad terms now?

Well, I even wrote in Rima's diary. So I went into really great depths with the character because I feel it is good to be prepped and do your homework rather than and then let it be there. Your homework is there. And then when you go on stage or you go in front of the screen, a part of it will be there, showing itself in the character somewhere without revealing.
What does the title signify for you? It's not just a horror show for sure.
Khauf for me, of course, it is for the masses, it is like, to just attract the audience, to just have them enter the room, it is Khauf to tell them that, yes, it's a horror show. But, otherwise, majorly what Smita tried to do with it and what the show is about, the Khauf of being a woman and living and surviving on daily basis in cities like India, but majorly in cities like Delhi or places like that. Khauf is just this whole fear of being a girl. I'm in Goa right now.

And last night, my friend called me to a place, and I was driving a car. Even in that car, I was driving alone, and I was reaching that place. And there was this stretch of road with no lights and empty, and you know how Goa can get at night. Every place is not lit properly. So the first thing that came to my mind, oh my god. If two boys come, what will I do? So constantly, as a woman living up with this Khauf and I've, been brought up in Delhi. I have had those unwanted glares and unwanted touches and unwanted comments.
You have been trained under the maverick, the maestro, maverick Pankaj Kapur. So how has that shaped you as an actor over the last few years, your journey as an actor? What are the learnings that have still stayed with you?
See, I did a fifteen day workshop with him and the very initial phase of my career. What stayed with me and I think I'm blessed because that was my entry to this world. I was a flight attendant before. So that was my just first entry and with him I think with Pankaj sir, what stayed with me is discipline. With Pankaj sir, what stayed with me is when you go on a set or when you do a character, it's not just going and doing the lines.

Yes. It is a major part of it, remembering your lines and script and going and, you know, nibbling it. But when you are in your presence, there is always a being as a being, there is always something which is coming out of you. There is always something that you're saying. You're you are you're never neutral.
I think that stayed with me because of how the emotions enter the body and how the body operates from there. Mhmm. And the trust that you need to give to your body for that, you know, that came from Pankaj sir. I hope I made some sense.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Edited excerpts from the interview How did you prepare for your character Sridevi in Four Years Later? I didn't have to do much preparation in terms of I think, Sridevi is a very spontaneous, natural character in, many ways and also very close to my personality in a sense. So there was relatively less prep in that sense. Prep for any project, otherwise, is the basics of going through the script with the with the writers, directors, with your co actor, and kind of looking at the nuances in the scene, the different emotions, the feel. So more just a kind of dialogue and discussion and building, based on whatever instincts show up in that moment. What are the similarities between you and your character? Her zest for life, her curiosity for life, her ability to engage with people, her adaptability into new spaces, her desire to not kind of be by the book when it comes to who she is and how she is. But she also has a kind of softness to her, a kind of warmth to her. So I would say these are the things that are similar, to my character. How much do you feel the definition of love has changed or evolved over the years? In some sense, it has remained the same and, in other sense, constantly shifting and evolving and changing as we as human beings are changing. And so, definitely, over the years, I think there's been a larger focus, in a healthy way towards the self in terms of people, you know, focusing a little bit more on their own individual growth, their own individual needs, their journeys, and looking at relationships, not just as a means to completing oneself, fulfilling a void, but kind of walking alongside, another. And I think over time, because of this sense of individuality that has grown, across society, across people, it has also made people revisit, what a relationship looks like. Today, people live in long distance relationship by choice, and they make it work in whatever way they can. At the same time, I also do feel that sometimes that individual streak ends up creating more distance and creating a sense of not wanting to compromise, which is an essential part of any relating between two people. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Even in friendships, even in family relationships, there is a level of compromise or coming together or meeting halfway that needs to be there. And I feel like sometimes maybe that aspect, gets overlooked in the attempt to want to assert one's own individuality. What was the joy and the challenge to play this character in Four Years Later? I mean, the joy was, for me, I suppose, being able to express the side of my personality that I don't get a chance to do as often. I think most of my films, the characters that I've played are very serious, very hard hitting, and very often, I don't even get an opportunity to smile or laugh as much. It's a love story and to be able to play out that romantic aspect, which also I don't get much of an opportunity to do.

Edited excerpts from the interview STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD You are completing 20 years in the industry and are now making Saiyaara with two newcomers. Do you have memories of your first day on the sets of Zeher? I still remember it was October 1, 2004, and and Emraan Hashmi and Udita Goswami were shooting a scene. It was an evening shift. Kunal Deshmukh was my assistant. And, honestly, I've not really looked back and I know there have been ups, there have been downs. They are have been some really good times. There have been some really sad times. But I've never really looked back and looked at what I've achieved or not achieved. And, it's just that twenty years have passed so I'm thankful to too many people, but they've passed so fast. I'm looking and hope at my next twenty, I also around pass away this this fast. Because it's been a damn good time and it's been damn good fun. What's the advice that Mahesh Bhatt gave you that has still stayed with you and you would like to inculcate that and pass it on to the people you work with? Just the fact that you can be dishonest to anybody, your wife, your kids, your producer, your actor, but not to the film that you're making. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Without going on an overdrive with film promotions, the buzz is really like hot cakes. Is it a great validation? I'm actually happy that you're telling me this because I've been inside the studio for the last one month. I have no idea. And unlike the past when people travel from one studio to another, this is everything inhouse at YRF. So I haven't really gone out and met the world outside. Normally, when you are working on other films, you go out for the day; for sound, edit, and VFX. It was different different places. And just hearing it now, it does feel it does feel very redeeming and validating because when I started off this film, I was quite discouraged by a lot of senior people saying that nobody would be interested in a young love story. Because at that time, larger than life films were being made and I just thought that my voice would be lost there when everyone was shouting. So I just went and tried to make a film which is very different from what others were doing. And to me, the fact that people are appreciating that the difference that it's standing out means a lot. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Since this is your first collaboration with YRF, tell us about your three favourite Yash Raj films. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Veer-Zaara, Chandni. The music and visuals of your films always stand out. How much prep goes behind them? Music was a matter of survival. While working with Vishesh Films, we didn't have stars. Everyone was new, right from Emraan Hashmi to my sister to Kunal Kemmu. We realized that we didn't have the promotion budgets like other big star films. We only played one promo when others played five. So we have a song in such a way that that one song stays with you more than the four that have been played by a star cast film. So the survival mechanism somewhere became a way of working, and that's something I've continued over the last 20 years. But when it comes to visuals, I've never really concentrated on them. I've always let the actors act first, and then I place the camera according to that. But I must give credit to the last couple of years because I've been working with Vikas, he's someone who's added to my visual sense. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Were you surprised by the comparisons with Aashiqui 2? My wife used to always tell me when I made my first film, filmmakers like the great Pradeep Sarkar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali had their own style. She asked me what my style was and I didn't have any. She said every director had his own style. The fact that you're saying this now, I can go back and tell her I now have my own style. They're noticing something that I've done 12 years back. When I made Zeher, they said it looked like Murder. When I made Ek Villain, they said it looked like Murder 2. When I made Malang, they said it looked like Ek Villain. When I made Aashiqui 2, they said it looked like Woh Lame and Rockstar. So I think when I go ahead and make my next film, they'll say it looks like Saiyaara. I think when they're comparing it to my own work rather than somebody else's, it's good. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Aashiqui 2 was supposed to release on May 17, 2013. But the buzz was so high because of the songs that you actually had to release the film on April 26, three weeks in advance. Do you remember those times? I was staying in the studio day and night, and I had to release the film three weeks in advance. But it wasn't because the buzz was so high. It was because another film was coming on May 17 and we were not getting a solo release on April 26. In fact, it it was so soon that the film could not release overseas.

Edited excerpts of the interview: What are the changes that you plan to bring about? NFDC being one of the premier organisations of the government of India and now after the merger of other film organizations, the mandate has really become very comprehensive. But first and foremost, supporting the Indian independent filmmakers, has been the prime objective of NFDC that we will continue to do. At the same time, we also want to promote Indian cinema worldwide. We want to promote Indian cinema as soft power. And, third thing, since it is now part of the ecosystem, it means preserving the legacy, preserving the cinematic heritage of our country. Apart from restoration and preservation, we have to make cinema accessible. And, last but not the least, you know, promoting India as a filming destination so that we can get, foreign filmmakers to come and shoot in India. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD There is an attractive incentive scheme which has been announced by the government of India in the ministry of information broadcasting. So, we have a portal called 'India Hub'. It's kind of a single window system where you can submit all your applications online, and we will facilitate everything. What are the different genres of movies we will get to see at this year's IFFI? It's going to be different. IFFI always had two sections, Indian panorama and the international section that will be a part of the setup. At the same time, Film Bazaar is an important activity which happens during IFFI. A lot of budding filmmakers have emerged out of Film Bazaar. Right from the script stage, work in progress, co-production, market, mentoring, a film viewing room, all those things are all different verticals. **Cinema is also changing. There are films made for the theatrical, for OTT, and some for the festivals. What do you have to say about that benefit? ** You are absolutely right. Both theatrical releases as well as the streaming platforms we are exploring. In fact, we just have signed an agreement with Amazon where the NFDC filmography can be seen on its platform. We also are in touch with Prasar Bharati. They have their own platform. So that also we are exploring. Women's roles are also changing in cinema; what do you have to say about that bit of it? It is a content part of it. I think we need to support the writers as well, you know, the screenwriters specifically. And we are thinking of a scriptwriter's lab, but we also are thinking how we can take it to different corners of the country. And in that process, the women filmmakers, the women storytellers, also.
