Trump cuts off US trade talks with Canada

US President Donald Trump abruptly cut off trade talks with Canada on Friday over its tax targeting US technology firms, saying that it was a 'blatant attack' and that he would set a new tariff rate on Canadian goods within the next week. The move plunges US-Canada relations back into chaos after a period of relative calm that included a cordial G7 meeting in mid-June where Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to wrap up a new economic agreement within 30 days. It also came just hours after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent struck an upbeat tone on trade, touting progress had been made with China on reviving the flow of critical minerals for the US manufacturing sector and in other key tariff negotiations. The often-chaotic rollout of Trump's import levies since his return to office this year has frequently whipsawed financial markets, and have begun to weigh on consumer spending, the bedrock of the US economy. US stocks were briefly batted lower by his broadside against Canada, but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq managed to close out the week at record highs. Trump's action comes ahead of Canada's plans to begin collecting on Monday a previously enacted digital services tax on US technology firms, including Amazon, Meta, Alphabet's Google and Apple, among others. The tax is 3% of the digital services revenue a firm takes in from Canadian users above $20 million in a calendar year, and payments will be retroactive to 2022. Trump, in a post on his Truth Social media platform, called the tax 'a direct and blatant attack on our country' and said Canada was a 'very difficult country to TRADE with.' 'Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,' Trump said. 'We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven-day period.' Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that the negotiations with Canada would not resume 'until they straighten out their act,' adding that the US holds 'such power over Canada.' Canada is the second-largest US trading partner after Mexico, and the largest buyer of U.S exports. It bought $349.4 billion of US goods last year and exported $412.7 billion to the US, according to US Census Bureau data. Carney's office responded to Trump's announcement by saying: 'The Canadian government will continue to engage in these complex negotiations with the United States in the best interests of Canadian workers and businesses.' Bessent sought to downplay the U.S.-Canadian dispute in a CNBC interview, saying US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer would likely open a Section 301 probe into Canada's digital tax that would clear the way for tariff retaliation in the amount of harm to US firms, which he said was roughly $2 billion. The US has prepared similar retaliation against European countries that have imposed digital taxes. A USTR spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'WRAPPED UP BY labour DAY' Earlier on Friday, Bessent said the Trump administration's various trade deals with other countries could be done by the Sept. 1 labour Day holiday, citing talks with 18 top trade partners and another revision to a deal with China to reopen the flow of rare earth minerals and magnets. After a week where tariffs took a back seat to the US strike on Iran's nuclear facilities and the massive tax and spending bill in the US Congress, the Trump administration's trade negotiations have picked up. The United States sent a new proposal to the European Union on Thursday and India sent a delegation to Washington for more talks. 'So we have countries approaching us with very good deals,' Bessent said on Fox Business Network. 'We have 18 important trading partners.... If we can ink 10 or 12 of the important 18, there are another important 20 relationships, then I think we could have trade wrapped up by labour Day,' Bessent said. He did not mention any changes to a July 9 deadline for countries to reach deals with the United States or see tariffs spike higher, but Trump said at the White House that he could extend the tariff deadline or 'make it shorter.' Trump said that he would notify countries of their tariff rates within the next week and a half, adding: 'I'd like to just send letters out to everybody: Congratulations. You're paying 25%.' Reuters

Rare earths and real risk: Why the global supply chain needs a rethink

They are buried in our smartphones, embedded in EV motors, and essential to jet engines and wind turbines. Yet most people could not name a single rare earth element. This quiet invisibility belies their strategic importance. As the world accelerates towards a more digital and electrified future, rare earths have become indispensable – and increasingly, a source of geopolitical friction. The global supply chain behind these elements is under pressure. China currently produces nearly 70 per cent of rare earth ores and holds more than 95 per cent of global refining and separation capacity. For heavy rare earths, that number is closer to total control. This concentration gives China significant influence over price, availability and access to materials that power the energy transition and advanced defence technologies. In short, it is not just an economic advantage. It is a position of systemic control. But the challenges do not end with geographic concentration. The industry also struggles with what is known as the 'balance problem'. Not all rare earths are created equal. High-demand elements like neodymium and praseodymium, crucial for permanent magnets in electric vehicles and wind turbines, are co-mined with lower-demand elements such as cerium and lanthanum. Producers must extract and process everything, regardless of market demand. That creates inefficiencies, price distortions and sustainability concerns. This imbalance has strategic consequences. Without careful co-ordination, demand for magnet rare earths could outpace supply within the next decade. That does not mean catastrophe, but it does mean rising costs, tighter margins, and a squeeze on industries that depend on long-term stability. Momentum is finally shifting. As the urgency to diversify supply chains intensifies, ion adsorption clay (IAC) deposits have come into focus – and not just in China and Myanmar, where they have long been tapped. Exploration efforts are under way in countries like Brazil, Uganda and South-east Asia, offering new access to heavy rare earths. Unlike traditional hard-rock mines, IAC operations can reach production in just four to seven years, giving them a distinct strategic and commercial advantage. Refining is the next major hurdle. Mining rare earths without the ability to refine them only shifts the bottleneck, it does not solve it. Today, the vast majority of REE concentrates – even those mined outside China – are still sent back for processing. But that is beginning to change. Companies like Lynas in Malaysia, MP Materials in the US, and Neo Performance Materials in Estonia are building local refining capacity. These efforts mark early steps towards a more regionally balanced and secure supply chain. Innovation is also reshaping what's possible across the value chain. Manufacturing techniques like grain boundary diffusion allow for the reduction of dysprosium and terbium usage without compromising performance – a potential game changer given their sensitivity to supply shocks. Meanwhile, magnet recycling and by-product recovery from sources like phosphogypsum offer alternative streams of material with lower environmental impact. A co-ordinated, multinational response is essential. The US, Japan and Australia have launched public-private initiatives to diversify rare earth supply chains and strengthen refining capabilities. It is not just about securing raw materials. It is about ensuring that economic resilience and national security are not tied to a single point of failure. For those deeply involved in the rare earth ecosystem, from miners and refiners to end users and policymakers, the issues at stake go well beyond geology or engineering. They are a test of foresight and preparedness. The companies and countries that invest, innovate, and collaborate today will be the ones best positioned to thrive in the next era of industrial transformation. The 20th century was powered by oil. The 21st will be driven by rare earths. Those who recognise this early and act decisively will shape the future.

Green SM recognized for green leadership at AREA 2025

BANGKOK, THAILAND - Media OutReach Newswire - 28 June 2025 - Green SM, Southeast Asia's first all-electric ride-hailing platform, developed by Vietnam's Green and Smart Mobility Joint Stock Company (GSM), has been awarded Green Leadership at the prestigious Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA) 2025 held in Bangkok. The recognition celebrates Green SM's pioneering role in shaping a sustainable transportation ecosystem in Vietnam and expanding its green mobility model across the region. Founded in 2011 by Enterprise Asia, AREA is among the most respected awards in Asia for corporate sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility. The 2025 theme, "A Necessary Shift to a Regenerative Economy," highlights the growing expectation for businesses to restore ecosystems and deliver sustainable value to communities. Green SM stood out in the Green Leadership category for its scalable and inclusive approach to electrifying urban transport. The company operates its own fleet of electric vehicles, while also offering a technology platform – the Green SM Platform, allowing individual VinFast EV owners to join the service. In addition, Green SM also partners with traditional taxi operators to support their transition to electric vehicles. Together, these three components form a flexible, open ecosystem that accelerates the shift toward green mobility in Vietnam and beyond. "Sustainability at Green SM goes beyond strategy. It is deeply embedded in our everyday decisions, our culture, and how we grow," said Ms. Phan Thi Hong Dung, Director of Training and Culture Development at GSM, at the award ceremony. "We believe that a truly sustainable model only works when every individual within the ecosystem chooses to live green, work green, and serve their community with kindness and responsibility. Each ride with Green SM not only helps reduce emissions but also encourages positive habits and sets new standards for sustainable living in society. We are proud that Green SM's journey toward global expansion has been recognized on such a prominent platform in Asia." The award marks a significant milestone in Green SM's broader "Go Green Global" journey. This recognition goes beyond a single Vietnamese enterprise. It reflects Vietnam's growing potential to drive innovation, scale impactful solutions, and contribute a long-term ecosystem perspective to the global green transformation. In just two years, the company has expanded beyond Vietnam into Laos, Indonesia, and the Philippines, completing more than 300 million trips, covering 1.7 billion zero-emission kilometers. The total reduction in CO₂ emissions is estimated at over 211,000 tons, equivalent to the annual carbon absorption capacity of approximately 3,200 hectares of forest. Back home in Vietnam, the company leads the electric taxi market with nearly 40% market share and has partnered with nearly 100 local transport businesses to support their electrification journeys. Big local names such as G7 Taxi, Mai Linh, Lado Taxi, and En Vang have joined the effort with 19 companies fully converting their fleets to electric vehicles. This marks a defining shift: green mobility is no longer an alternative, but a new standard in modern urban transport. With operations now spanning four Southeast Asian countries, Green SM is the second-largest ride-hailing brand in the region and the only one powered entirely by electric vehicles. Its ability to operate efficiently across diverse markets with varying infrastructure and user behaviors is a strong testament to the company's capacity for large-scale deployment, high adaptability, and strategic regional vision as a Vietnamese brand.
