
New Age UK campaign urges everyone to be more active
One of the most impactful ways to maintain health and independence in later life is by staying physically active in your 50s and beyond. The benefits of keeping fit during mid-life extend far beyond the immediate—simple steps today can reap substantial rewards for the future. Despite these well-established benefits, the research shows that 6.6 million (47%) feel that they don't do enough or don't do any physical activity.
Evidence shows that being more active can lower the risk of depression and dementia, heart disease, frailty, stroke, Parkinson's and some cancers. Physical activity also plays a crucial role in maintaining our independence as we get older whether it's playing with grandchildren, travelling, or doing hobbies that bring joy.

Age UK's CEO Paul Farmer said: 'Even if you've never been particularly active, it's never too late to start. A short walk, a gentle stretch, or a low-impact activity like yoga can make a significant difference to your quality of life.
"There is now also emerging evidence that increasing physical activity contributes to improving social functioning and reducing loneliness and can help our thinking skills – like problem-solving. Every step counts toward better health, enhanced well-being, and greater independence in later years.'
Dr Al-Zubaidi is the Royal College of General Practitioners lifestyle and physical activity lead and long-distance triathlete. He's also appeared on ITV's This Morning. Dr Al-Zubaidi said: '10 years ago I was 26 kg heavier, sedentary, highly stressed, and had been diagnosed with a fatty liver disease and high blood pressure. The turning point came for me when I realised how much my lifestyle was shaping my future.'
Dr Al-Zubaidi has joined forces with Age UK to create a leaflet on how to become more physically active and how busy midlifers can realistically fit more physical activity into their daily schedules.

How to stay active
Staying active after 50 is crucial for maintaining health and independence in later life, but choosing the right type of activity is key. Activities that balance cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, and social engagement offer the greatest benefits.
Walking, swimming, and cycling are excellent low-impact cardiovascular options that improve heart health.
Strength training, through weights or resistance bands, helps maintain muscle mass and bone density.
Yoga or Pilates can enhance flexibility and balance, while team sports such as walking football combine fitness with social interaction.
Over 50s face many barriers that prevent them getting the recommended amount of physical activity, including lack of time, caring responsibilities, or feeling intimidated in leisure settings. Activities that align with personal interests and fitness levels help overcome these and scheduling regular sessions and starting slowly can build confidence.
Being social with team sports can be a powerful motivator making it more enjoyable along with sharing goals and progress with friends or family.
Age UK's Caroline Abrahams, says: 'By varying exercises, addressing barriers and embracing the social side of fitness, individuals 50+ can enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle while building meaningful relationships and preparing for later life.'

Age UK supporter Sheila started running when she was 35. Sheila has many distance and cross-country championships, and several marathons under her belt.
At nearly 83, Sheila still tries to run every day and on Sundays she has a long run. She says she feels the same as she did when she was 40.

48 medical conditions eligible for Attendance Allowance
Pensioners living with these 48 common health conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, or dementia could be missing out on thousands of pounds in financial support each year, experts have warned. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently revealed that nearly 1.7 million people over State Pension age are claiming Attendance Allowance, a tax-free benefit designed to help cover the extra costs of living with a long-term illness or disability. In Scotland, it's also called Pension Age Disability Payment. Despite the significant financial help on offer — up to £110.40 per week or £441.60 every four weeks — pension specialists say many people still don't realise they qualify. "Add to that the fact people's conditions can make it more difficult to spend the time and energy needed to research possible help. That's why 18 months ago we launched our Attendance Allowance (AA) guide and awareness campaign, and successes have flooded in since. Yet it still remains massively underclaimed, with potentially a million eligible pensioners missing out (source: Policy in Practice). That's simply not the case. 'We regularly speak with pensioners who've struggled in silence for years, not realising they were missing out on thousands of pounds annually. 'A successful claim for Attendance Allowance can be life-changing — easing financial pressure and helping people maintain independence in their own homes.' The 5 ‘pillars of ageing' doctors use to determine if you will live a long and healthy life – so how do you fare?
MANY of us want to live a long and healthy life - but how often do we think about the things we're doing now to help us get there? A five-part quiz created by experts may reveal how well you're ageing. 3 Developed as part of the Take Five to Age Well project by The Open University and Age UK, the quiz asks a series of questions that may prompt you to take action. Many factors influence healthy ageing, some of which aren't in our control, while others are within our reach. Genetic factors cannot be controlled, but many affecting our physical, mental and social well-being can. Jitka Vseteckova, Senior Lecturer Health and Social Care at The Open University, and Lis Boulton, Visiting Research Fellow at the university, identified five key areas - known as the Five Pillars for Ageing Well - they say form a "strong foundation for staying well and thriving in later life". And it's these five pillars that form part of the quiz. 1. Are you eating well? Eating healthily means consuming a balanced diet with a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while limiting processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats. Writing for The Conversation, Vseteckova and Boulton say: "Diets like the Mediterranean plan are linked with a lower risk of dementia and other chronic conditions. "Malnutrition is a serious concern in older age, especially when it comes to maintaining strong muscles and bones." 2. Are you staying hydrated? Drinking enough water is vital for maintaining bodily functions, promoting overall health, and preventing various health issues. Not drinking enough can cause dehydration and affect cognitive function, mood and energy. What healthy looks like Vseteckova and Boulton advise: "Cutting down on sugary drinks can help you to maintain a healthy weight and staying within recommended alcohol limits can also help lower your risk of conditions like dementia. Hydration really matters." But they add for people with life-limiting illnesses or conditions like advanced dementia, appetite and oral intake may be severely reduced. And sugary drinks may be one of the few sources of calories they can tolerate, so hydration should take priority over strict nutritional guidelines. 3. Are you being physically active? 3 Being physically active is crucial for both physical and mental well-being, offering numerous benefits such as reduced risk of chronic diseases, improved mood, and increased energy levels. Just walking more can boost health, say Vseteckova and Boulton, and when paired with good nutrition, can help prevent degenerative disease osteoporosis. 4. Are you connecting socially? Social connection is a fundamental human need, crucial for both mental and physical well-being. Strong social bonds provide emotional support, reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, and contribute to a sense of belonging and self-worth. Furthermore, social interaction has been linked to improved cognitive function, a stronger immune system, and even a longer life. Vseteckova and Boulton explain: "Loneliness increases the risk of depression and cognitive decline. "Building strong social ties earlier in life can help protect well-being over the long term." 5. Are you challenging your brain? 3 Challenging your brain is crucial for maintaining cognitive function, enhancing mental abilities, and potentially delaying cognitive decline. This could involve learning, reading, playing an instrument, or trying something new. Studies show activities like crossword puzzles or new physical activities can potentially delay dementia. "There's no magic fix, but even small actions can have lasting benefits," quip Vseteckova and Boulton. The Take Five to Age Well quiz is part of a free, expert-led, month-long challenge which supports participants' current habits and needs. Vseteckova and Boulton say: "We developed the Take Five to Age Well quiz to help people reflect on how they're doing across these five areas – and where there might be room to grow. "The follow-up resources are based on real-life experiences of ageing from diverse communities and offer small, achievable steps you can start today." Tips for living longer Live happier and healthier for longer with the NHS's top 10 tips: Watch what you eat and drink Eating a healthy, balanced diet is crucial for good health, energy and preventing illness. Look after your teeth Brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily to prevent gum disease. Gum disease can be linked to diabetes, stroke, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Stay active Regular exercise can help lower your risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even cancer. Make the most of your GP It's a good idea to get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels tested by your doctor. High readings can increase your risk of stroke and heart disease. Get a vitamin boost Lots of people have vitamin D deficiency but don't know it. The condition has been linked to cognitive impairment, bone problems, and cardiovascular disease. Make sure to get outdoors during the spring and summer months, and during autumn and winter you might want to consider taking a vitamin D supplement. Take care of your feet Look after your feet by applying moisturiser, cutting your toenails straight across, and making sure you wear footwear that fits properly and supports your feet. Contact your GP if your feet become painful. Sort out your sleep Getting enough sleep is important for staying healthy. Avoid insomnia by cutting down on daytime naps, establishing a bedtime routine and going to bed at the same time each night. Take the tests As we age our hearing and eyesight can be affected, so it's important to get them checked regularly. Stay in touch Spending time with other people can prevent you from feeling lonely or anxious. Give up smoking Smoking is linked to a range of different health problems, including heart disease and lung cancer. If you stop, regardless of your age, your circulation, lung capacity, and energy levels will improve.

Ashley Hamilton appeared on Monday's instalment of This Morning via video call from Idaho, US, and opened up to Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond about why her young daughter was using the injections. On yesterday's episode, the young girl opened up about her personal experience with her weight and bullying at school, which led her to approach her mum for help. She said: 'The bullying was definitely not ideal at all, it was just very hard to deal with because I used to think I was pretty and now I can't look at myself in the mirror without hating myself.' To this, Dermot asked: 'Ashley it's important to stress here, you have always instilled exercise, you've always instilled a good diet and it was just very, very difficult to keep the weight off. 'How hard was it for you to make that decision for Sophia to take the weight loss jabs?' In response, Ashley admitted it 'wasn't hard at all'. She added: 'When she came to me and asked if this would work for her I told her yes, but we have to get your blood work done and your labs done to make sure there is an underlying problem, because if there was nothing showing right then that is something that we would've said, 'Okay, this is diet and exercise type of thing'. 'But it wasn't hard at all for me to decide that.' The mother stressed that she had done research on the medications and continued: 'I knew that if she needed it this is what we were going to do.' When Sophia began to take the jabs, she soon noticed her mum had to remind her 'constantly' to eat. Sun Health Explainer: Fat jabs Despite this, now she can wear clothes similar to her pals, as she added: 'And then I started to lose weight and then I started to realise I actually had a lot of inflammation in my face and arms and in my hands. 'Now I can wear normal sizes for my age.' Dealing with people who I can tell are judging me but it doesn't bother me Ashley Hamilton Following this, Alison asked Ashley if she had received any backlash for her decision to take weight loss injections. To this, the mum admitted: 'A lot of people deal with backlash on social media from people but for me it's actually been more in my real life. 'Dealing with people who I can tell are judging me but it doesn't bother me. 'It's a way for me to educate more people on what the reason is that I started.' Sophia is now no longer on the injections and during the conversation, This Morning's resident GP Dr Zoe Williams shared her thoughts. Dr Zoe acknowledged: 'The thing to consider, Sophia's a perfect example of this, Sophie already had insulin resistance and her blood work was showing that she had pre-diabetes. Everything you need to know about fat jabs Weight loss jabs are all the rage as studies and patient stories reveal they help people shed flab at almost unbelievable rates, as well as appearing to reduce the risk of serious diseases. Wegovy – a modified version of type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic – and Mounjaro are the leading weight loss injections used in the UK. Wegovy, real name semaglutide, has been used on the NHS for years while Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a newer and more powerful addition to the market. Mounjaro accounts for most private prescriptions for weight loss and is set to join Wegovy as an NHS staple this year. How do they work? The jabs work by suppressing your appetite, making you eat less so your body burns fat for energy instead and you lose weight. They do this my mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which signals to the brain when the stomach is full, so the drugs are officially called GLP-1 receptor agonists. They slow down digestion and increase insulin production, lowering blood sugar, which is why they were first developed to treat type 2 diabetes in which patients' sugar levels are too high. Can I get them? NHS prescriptions of weight loss drugs, mainly Wegovy and an older version called Saxenda (chemical name liraglutide), are controlled through specialist weight loss clinics. Typically a patient will have to have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, classifying them as medically obese, and also have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure. GPs generally do not prescribe the drugs for weight loss. Private prescribers offer the jabs, most commonly Mounjaro, to anyone who is obese (BMI of 30+) or overweight (BMI 25-30) with a weight-related health risk. Private pharmacies have been rapped for handing them out too easily and video calls or face-to-face appointments are now mandatory to check a patient is being truthful about their size and health. Are there any risks? Yes – side effects are common but most are relatively mild. Around half of people taking the drug experience gut issues, including sickness, bloating, acid reflux, constipation and diarrhoea. Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical consultant at said: 'One of the more uncommon side effects is severe acute pancreatitis, which is extremely painful and happens to one in 500 people.' Other uncommon side effects include altered taste, kidney problems, allergic reactions, gallbladder problems and hypoglycemia. Evidence has so far been inconclusive about whether the injections are damaging to patients' mental health. Figures obtained by The Sun show that, up to January 2025, 85 patient deaths in the UK were suspected to be linked to the medicines. 'What you always have to consider is the risks and potential risks of a medication but weigh that against the risks and potential risks of doing nothing. "Wen you've tried all the sensible things - the exercise, the changes to eating, the psychological approach - for some people like Sophia and her mum it's a genetic thing. 'Your genes predispose you to having problems with your weight. 'In Sophia's case it seems it's been really helpful for her.'
