-Bayern Munich win maiden women's W7F title against Manchester United
May 23 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Manchester United and claim the inaugural women's World Sevens Football (W7F) title in Estoril, Portugal on Friday.
Matches in the $5 million prize-pool tournament consisted of two 15-minute halves on half-sized pitches, with golden goals in extra time for tiebreakers.
Simi Awujo gave United the lead in the 14th minute with a brilliant shot into the top corner, her third goal of the tournament.
Bayern equalised in the second half when Momoko Tanikawa scored with a left-foot strike, and Sarah Zadrazil clinched the victory four minutes from time with a powerful shot.
"It was such an important goal. So I just ran to the teammates that couldn't play because we are all one big family and it was also for them that we are champions now," Zadrazil said.
The tournament, featuring elite European clubs including Manchester City, Paris St Germain, AS Roma, Sweden's FC Rosengard, Ajax Amsterdam and Benfica, culminated in a final-day showcase including two semi-finals, with PSG beating City 3-1 to take third place.
The event launched two social initiatives -- 'Community Champions', awarding $10,000 grants to three local non-profit organisations, and 'Rising 7's', aimed at countering the trend of girls dropping out of sports during adolescence.

Lauren James climbed off the bench in the second period as she made her first appearance since a hamstring injury in April. It did not take long for her to make an impact as she supplied the cross for Russo's goal shortly after her introduction. Wiegman added: 'We're still building her. She's worked so hard to be here where she is now. At Chelsea first, but then the last two weeks in training camps, she could do every single training session and did really well. 'Now this is the first time she could get minutes and we hope next week we can keep building her going into France. 'Also there is a lot of competition going on upfront and in midfield so we've figured out over the last couple days how we will start.' England feared Mead picked up an injury when she went down holding her knee as the game ticked over into stoppage time. The fans had their hearts in their mouths when Mead received treatment on the field, but she was able to get up and carry on before she scored the last goal of the game. Wiegman said: 'It was a hit on her knee. She's OK, she's good. 'Everyone came out fit and healthy so it was just a hard knock. It looked horrible so we were a little bit scared too, but she could even score after that moment.'
