Footy star Abbey Holmes makes a stunning decision about her TV career just seven weeks after giving birth to her first child

Daily Mail17-07-2025
Popular football commentator Abbey Holmes has decided to return to work commentating on the AFL for Channel Seven less than two months after giving birth to her son Braxton.
The 34-year-old proud mum has opened up about resuming her role with the broadcaster, working just two days per week while also taking care of her baby at home.
Her first match back will be on July 25 when Essendon take on the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.
'I feel incredibly lucky to step back into a job I love, while also soaking up the joy of being a mum,' Holmes said.
'It's the perfect balance, and I'm so grateful for the support from both my family and my work family to get me back doing what I love.
'Coming back to work fills me with so much excitement.
'I've missed the team, the buzz, and being part of the action. I'm ready to hit the ground running next Friday night at Marvel Stadium and can't wait for little Brax to see his mumma in action.
'It's been such a special time at home with Braxton and Keegan and I feel so lucky to be able to go back to a job that I love and come home to our family.'
Holmes, who is married to ex-footy star Keegan Brooksby, revealed last month that her son's birth did not go to plan and she required an emergency C-section.
The fan favourite will travel for footy over the next few weeks and also appear at the Logies with Seven.
'I've been watching so much footy and now I'm rapt to be back in the thick of it,' Holmes said.
'I'm so thankful to the amazing team at Seven who made it easy for me to take the time I needed, and who've welcomed me back with open arms.
'It's the best feeling to know I can have both – a career I love and precious time with my family.
'Being a mum has changed me in the most incredible ways, but one thing that hasn't changed is my passion for my career and the game. I couldn't be more ready to be back.'
The former footballer revealed earlier in the year that she discovered she was pregnant after running the New York Marathon in November.
'As you can imagine, it was a bit of a shock given what I had just put my body through, but I'm in awe of what the human body can do,' she said.
Nevertheless, Abbey said at the time that she and Keegan 'could not be happier to welcome our first child into the world, later this year'.
'We are so excited and grateful to be in this position, as we know how difficult it can be for so many people. We're on cloud nine and can't wait for this next chapter.'

Lauren James injury latest as England provide update on ‘scare' ahead of Euro 2025 final

England forward Lauren James is set to be available for the Euro 2025 final against Spain after recovering from an ankle injury. James was forced off at half-time during England's semi-final win over Italy but has trained in the days before the final and is set to be fit. Sarina Wiegman expects to have all 23 players available for selection, should they come through their final recovery, including James. 'We had 23 players on the pitch today and everyone came through, so if everyone recovers well then we have 23 players available for tomorrow,' Wiegman said. 'I think we have many players that can impact, and we know that (James) can have an impact too, so that will be nice.' James played a key part in England's 1-0 win over the world champions Spain at Wembley in February - the last time Spain lost a match. 'Lauren brings something slightly different,' Leah Williamson said. 'Just like the others, so obviously having that available is best-case scenario for us.' Williamson has recovered from her own ankle injury and is set to captain England in the final after missing out of the 2023 World Cup, where the Lionesses lost 1-0 to Spain in Sydney. 'I can speak for every single member of the squad when I say we will play as long as we get the green light, we would play through absolutely anything to be involved at this stage,' Williamson said. 'My ankle is great. My mum actually rolled her ankle a couple of days ago, so she's taken all the attention away from me now. But no, I had a scare. Obviously I want to be involved, and I want to be available to help the team any way they need me.' Williamson said it was 'awful' to miss out on the last World Cup and admitted she felt 'useless' watching England in the final against Spain. 'That probably bothered me the most,' Williamson said. 'Of course, I'm very happy with that,' Wiegman said when asked about Williamson's availability as captain. 'I am very happy that we have 23 players available tomorrow and yeah, Leah has a big role in the team, so it's really nice to have her on the pitch.'

New Match of the Day presenter Gabby Logan teased for 'embarrassing and cringeworthy' video begging Alexander Isak not to leave Newcastle as fans joke they 'thought clip was AI'

Gabby Logan has been teased on social media for her 'embarrassing and cringeworthy' plea begging Alexander Isak to stay at Newcastle this summer. Mail Sport first revealed earlier this week that the striker has told the club he wants to leave and Liverpool are preparing a staggering British record offer. Isak did not travel with his team-mates to Singapore after reporting a thigh injury and boss Eddie Howe has admitted the Magpies have a 'decision to make' over the ace. But Logan, one of three new Match of the Day presenters who will share the famous hot seat after Gary Lineker stepped away, has not given up hope that the frontman - who could go for as much as £150million - could change his mind. She spoke about the possibility of the Swede walking away from St James' Park on The Sports Agents podcast, declaring her words came 'from the heart'. 'The citadel of St James Park, that sits high and proud at the centre of the town, is like a cathedral of hope, of creativity, of joy,' Logan said. 'You know yourself: on match day, there probably isn't anywhere else in the world you'd rather play football.' "Don't leave, you're already at home!" 🏠 Gabby Logan makes an emotional call for Alexander Isak to stay at Newcastle United amid rumours he's asked the club for a way out. 🖤🤍 @GlobalPlayer | — The Sports Agents (@sportsagentspod) July 25, 2025 'It's a city that has grown champions and heroes. From Jackie Milburn to Alan Shearer, you have walked in the footsteps of some giants. You know the love and adoration that comes from being Newcastle's number nine.' Logan then concluded the impassioned video message by saying: 'Alexander, don't leave. Don't go anywhere else. You are already at home!' However, social media users were quick to brutally rib the presenter for the display. 'Wow. What on earth is this?' one account said. 'Embarrassing and cringeworthy.' Another simply said: 'This is absolutely pathetic.' 'Hahahaha what in the cringe is this. Embarrassing stuff,' a third wrote. A fourth added: 'I honestly thought this was AI ha, I mean seriously wtf?' Howe believes any decision over the wantaway Isak must be best for the club. When asked if he wanted a quick resolution, the Newcastle boss said: 'I wouldn't put a timescale on it. I think with these situations it has to be right for the football club, and everything then is taken into context below that. 'But the club will make the right decision with all the information that it has, and ultimately to try and move the club forward in whatever way that is. Then it's up to us to make good decisions the other way and try and improve the squad as best we can. That's what we're trying to do, regardless of Alex's situation. 'But I think there's a wider picture here. There's a whole football club that has to make the decision. The ownership, together with the board of directors, especially with the money involved in modern day transfers. The manager of course has an opinion, but ultimately the decision will rest with the board.'

Australia coach certain Morgan clearout was penalty

Australia coach Joe Schmidt says the decision not to penalise Jac Morgan for his clearout in the lead-up to the British and Irish Lions' match-winning try in the second Test goes against the sport's "push for player safety".Hugo Keenan's score in the final play of the game snatched a 29-26 victory for the tourists and secured a first Test series win for the Lions since Television Match Official checked Morgan's clearout on Carlo Tizzano at the final ruck before the try and agreed with Andrea Piardi's initial decision to award the try."I think everyone can make their own decision on that," Schmidt said."Players make errors, match officials make errors. Our perspective is we felt it was a decision that doesn't really live up to the big player safety push that they're talking about."You cannot hit someone above the level of their shoulders and there's no bind with the left arm, the hand's on the ground."That's what we've seen, we've watched a number of replays from different angles. It is what it is, we just have to accept it."Schmidt said you have to "read law 9.20" to understand why it should have been a 9.20 states: "A player must not charge into a ruck or maul without binding onto another player."It also states that "making contact above the line of the shoulders with an opponent is a dangerous play and is prohibited". A textbook and brilliant clearout - Russell Fly-half Finn Russell said Morgan, who came on as a replacement for Tom Curry early in the second half, produced a "textbook" added that he felt Tizzano's reaction was to try to get the score overturned."When he goes down holding his head, there's always going to be a question," Russell said."But I think when you saw it back, it just shows that it's a textbook clearout. I think it's a brilliant clearout from Jac."He's gone in there and Tizzano's over the ball, which is a good play from him. But I think Jac's just cleared him out really well. It's almost the aggression that he cleared him out with."That's what the question mark was almost. It shouldn't be a question mark. He obviously holds his head and tries to get a penalty from it."The fly-half's view is similar to the one held by Lions head coach Andy Farrell."It was a brilliant clearout. I couldn't understand what they were going back for," added Farrell."They seem to go back for absolutely everything these days, don't they? I'm so pleased that the referee held his nerve. The right decision in my opinion." Former Lions tourist Andy Nicol was also in agreement that Morgan, who is the only Wales player remaining on the trip and was making his Lions Test debut, did "nothing wrong".Nicol told BBC's Rugby Union Weekly: "He was always low. The 'jackaler' went in and put his head in a dangerous position and Jac cleared him out."I was watching in the stands and said if this is turned over, it's the end of rugby."That was a classic rugby incident. That's how Jac Morgan and every player is taught and coached to clear out a ruck. "Just because the player went flying back and highlighted where it was on the back of the neck, that's where real injuries happen so they are looking at it, but that was a perfect clearout."The Lions went into the game as favourites to seal the series after a comfortable first Test win in Brisbane, where they at one point led Wallabies finished well there to lose 27-19 and continued that form into the second game in side grabbed three first-half tries - two in quick succession with England's Tommy Freeman in the sin-bin - to lead 23-5.A decider in Sydney, as there was in 2013, looked to be on the cards until the Lions fought back from 18 points down to win the game with the final play and get in front for the first time in the the crushing defeat, the Wallabies - who for the first time in their history failed to qualify for the knockout stages of a Rugby World Cup in 2023 - showed they were a worthy match for Lions."It's painful, I'm so proud of the team and how we bounced back," Wallabies captain Harry Wilson said."We played some terrific footy and to not get the result and go to a series decider hurts everyone."
