IGOR NESTEROV, the trainer of former boxing world and Olympic champion Alexander Povetkin, has been killed in a combat operation, according to World of Boxing Promotions.
A statement from the organisation revealed the news of Nesterov's death on Wednesday.

While the full details of his death were not provided, according to VKontakte, Povetkin himself said that he had been killed in an African country.
Nesterov was in Povetkin's team as a strength training coach and sparring partner as he won super-heavyweight gold at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
As one of the 45-year-old's closest friends, Nesterov also saw Povetkin become the WBA (2011-2013) and WBC interim (2020-21) world champion.
Povetkin was also a gold medal winner at the World Championships in 2003 and two European Championship titles in 2002 and 2004.
The statement said: "We regret to inform you that Igor Nesterov died during the execution of a combat mission...
"The passing of Igor Nesterov is a great loss for the entire boxing family. It is hard and bitter to realize that he is no longer with us.
"On behalf of the promotion company 'World of Boxing', we express our deep condolences to the family and friends of Igor.
"Rest In Peace Boar... Your memory will always remain with us."
Povetkin and Nesterov had known one another since 1998.
The Russian had previously participated in a military operation in Ukraine.

As reported by RIA Novosti, Povetkin said of his friend: "Igor Anatolyevich Nesterov, unfortunately, died.
"In one of the African countries. Previously, he participated in the SVO, and then went there.
"I have known him since 1998. Igor was a devoted friend and patriot of our country."
Povetkin has also fought against the likes of Wladimir Klitschko, Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte.
He was defeated in single title bouts by Klitschko and AJ.
Meanwhile, he had beaten Whyte during their first meeting in 2020 to win the interim WBC heavyweight title before losing in 2021 to Whyte in what was his final fight before retirement.
However, earlier this year it was revealed Povetkin has been serving a four-year ban for doping, which has cost him a DECADE of fight results.
He was slapped with the sanction after it was discovered he'd failed a drug test back in October 2014.
An investigation by the International Testing Agency into systemic doping in Russian sports discovered a sample returned by Povetkin after his clash with Carlos Takam came back positive for Ostarine.
But he continued boxing as the positive sample, which was retrieved from the Moscow Laboratory by the World Anti-Doping Agency, went UNREPORTED.
Povetkin tested positive for Ostarine and Meladonium - the drug at the centre of Maria Sharapova's doping scandal - in 2016 and was hit with a one-year ban.
But the uncovering of his failed test in 2014 has seen him handed a four-year sanction.
An ITA statement read: 'After being notified of the case and informed of his procedural rights, the athlete decided not to challenge the anti-doping rule violation.
"Povetkin's ban came into effect on October 21 2024 and will be in force until October 20 2028.
'In addition, the athlete's results from October 25 2014 until the start of the athlete's provisional suspension on October 21 2024 have been disqualified.
Including the results obtained during a boxing match held on the night of October 24/25 2014.'
The wiping out of a decade's worth of wins for Povetkin has seen his triumphs over Brits Hughie Fury, David Price and Whyte overturned to No Contests.

ITV gamble pays off with eight million expected to watch England's Euro semi-final

ITV is poised to surge ahead of the BBC in the European Championship ratings battle, with an audience of more than eight million people expected to watch England's semi-final against Italy on Tuesday night. The commercial broadcaster took a gamble by choosing to have first pick of the semi-finals in pre-tournament negotiations with the BBC, which in return got live coverage of three of the four quarter-finals, including England's thrilling penalty shootout win over Sweden. The broadcasters will share live coverage of Sunday's final. ITV's show of faith that Sarina Wiegman's side would reach the last four appears to have paid off, because viewing figures have increased significantly through the tournament. With the drama of England's victory against Sweden having captured the nation's imagination, ITV is hopeful of gaining more viewers than the 7.3 million peak audience that watched the quarter-final on the BBC. In another potential boost for viewing figures all English schools will be closed for the summer holidays from Tuesday afternoon, so even the youngest England fans may be allowed to stay up to watch the Lionesses. ITV would have lost millions in advertising revenue had England been knocked out, which given the commercial constraints under which it operates, may have had implications for its coverage of other sporting events. ITV's peak audience almost doubled from the 2.6 million who watched England's opening match against France to 4.2 million viewers for the team's final group game against Wales the following week. England's Euro 2022 semi-final win over Sweden – also a primetime evening kick-off in midweek – was watched by 9.3 million people and their extra-time victory in the final against Germany reached a peak audience of 17.4 million, the highest-rated TV event of the year and the most-watched women's game ever on UK television. England's World Cup final defeat by Spain 12 months later attracted a smaller audience of 13.2m – 10.7m on BBC One and 2.5m on ITV – with the drop largely attributable to the Sunday morning kick-off. England fans will be able to celebrate into the small hours if England reach the final because the Home Office has extended pub opening hours until 1am to mark an occasion of 'exceptional national significance'. Licensed premises that normally close at 11pm are permitted to serve alcohol for another two hours, although pubs are not obliged to stay open.

Aldi announces opening date for new North Wales store

A new Aldi store is set to open in North Wales. The German-owned discount chain are launching a new site on The Airfields, Welsh Road, Deeside on Thursday, August 14. The new store - which throws open its doors at 8am that day - will be run by store manager Spencer Kearney, along with a team of 27 colleagues from the local community. When it was mooted earlier this year the 21,000 sq ft supermarket just off the A494 was expected to be one of the largest in the UK. Mr Kearney and his team will be joined by Olympic bronze medal-winning diver Lois Toulson to celebrate the store opening by cutting a ribbon on the opening morning. Lois will also give away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi's famous Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in the queue. Mr Kearney said: 'We can't wait to open the doors to the new store in Deeside. It's set to be a special day and having Olympic hero Lois Toulson join us will make it a morning to remember.' Lois added: 'I'm so excited to be opening Aldi's new store. It will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of Team GB.' The new Aldi store is also calling on local charities and food banks in Deeside to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations in the local community. Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, seven days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner up with the new Aldi store should email aldi@

Italy's icon Cristiana Girelli takes Le Azzurre to verge of Euro 2025 history

The clock showed 89 minutes and 18 seconds. That was how close a weary Italy were to extra time against Norway in a tense quarter-final in Geneva. It was clear from the frayed nerves and unusually dishevelled appearance of the coaching staff on Italy's bench that they were concerned those on the field did not have much left in the tank. All their stamina and emotions had been left on the pitch after almost 90 energy-sapping minutes of a game they knew they should be winning. What they seemed to forget for a minute, however, was that they have Cristiana Girelli. Their talismanic centre-forward can do many things on a football pitch but nothing is more certain than her scoring goals. They only needed one chance, one delivery and the odds were on that their captain would take it. That moment came: a pinpoint Sofia Cantore cross, an intelligent run by Girelli to lose the full-back and an angled header that had one destination. It was a goal emblematic of Girelli's career, which has spanned the best part of two decades, and sent Italy into a European Championship semi-final for the first time since 1997. With 122 caps and 61 goals across 12 years, Girelli has been at the forefront of Le Azzurre's last six major tournament appearances and is widely considered among her peers and fans as one of the best to pull on the shirt. Girelli has played her entire career in Italy, bridging the gap from amateur to full-time, with Serie A Femminile going fully professional only in 2022. She has spent seven seasons with Juventus and finished the last campaign as the league's top scorer with 19 goals that propelled Le Bianconere to their first title in three years. She is not a conventional No 9. Although her movement in the area, aerial ability and instinctive finishing are second to none, she is more than a penalty box poacher. She loves to drop deeper and help build from the pocket, is potent from free-kicks and, as shown in the Group C draw with Portugal, has the ability to score from distance. In the quarter-final, she not only scored twice but made six recoveries and led the way for Italy in terms of duels won (eight), touches in the opposition box (seven) and shots on target. It was a performance that illustrated her capabilities at defending from the front as much as her threat in front of goal. Girelli wears her heart on her sleeve. The emotion she feels representing her country and bringing them success runs deep. This has never been more evident than when the final whistle blew on Wednesday night. Having barely had time to rest after being substituted, she ran on to the field in disbelief, hands to her head, before embracing Barbara Bonansea, a player with whom she has spent so much of her journey. The two centurions' careers have been inextricably linked, their national team debuts coming six months apart and Girelli moving to Juventus a year after Bonansea. The latter deserves just as much credit for Italy's development. The tears flowed and the celebrations were euphoric. Girelli turned photographer temporarily for a picture in front of Italy's fans as they started to realise what they had achieved. 'It's a dream come true,' Girelli said. 'It's really something special. I felt something different – something special – in this team. I've seen a special light in the eyes of my teammates … It's history for Italian women's football. I'm so happy and proud for this team.' Unfortunately, the progress of the women's game in Italy has been slow, with less investment and accessibility than in other top European footballing nations. It has meant that Girelli has failed to receive due praise, something Italy's manager, Andrea Soncin, alluded to on Wednesday. 'Throughout her career, she's received less recognition than she truly deserves, both for her technical ability and her character,' he said. Sign up to Moving the Goalposts No topic is too small or too big for us to cover as we deliver a twice-weekly roundup of the wonderful world of women's football after newsletter promotion In the semi-finals await England, where there has been no lack of support in recent years. For Girelli, it could be her last appearance at a major international tournament. It is uncertain how long she can continue and she told AFP on Saturday that this would be her last Euros. However, she and her teammates will be determined this journey does not end just yet. Italy are on the brink of something monumental, one win from a game that could massively improve the trajectory of the sport back home. Girelli's legacy is written but her last contribution to a nation she has served for so long could yet be the biggest of all.
