Cybercrime Issues, Cost Of Living And TNB Bills Among Focus Of Parliament Today

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- Cybercrime issues, cost of living, and changes to the Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) electricity bill structure are among the matters that will be raised in Parliament today. According to the Order of Business on the Parliament portal, Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) will ask the Home Minister about the number of cybercrime cases reported throughout 2024 as well as the ministry's steps to improve the level of digital security of the people, during the question-and-answer session. Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) will ask the Finance Minister about the government's strategy to reduce the burden of the people's cost of living following the country's total debt now reaching RM1.5 trillion, in addition to the World Bank's announcement that Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth for 2025 will fall to 3.9 per cent and the country's situation facing reciprocal tariffs from the United States. Also expected to attract attention will be the question from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) who will seek an explanation from the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation on the changes to the TNB electricity bill structure which no longer uses tiered rates for domestic consumers. He also will want to know whether the new mechanism would ensure cost fairness, energy efficiency, and maintain concentrated subsidies for the B40 and M40 groups. In addition, Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) will also pose a question to the Minister of Communications on whether social media such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Xiaohongshu which publish advertisements about various scams and fraudulent investment schemes are held accountable to the victims of scams and fraudulent schemes through the said platforms. After the question-and-answer session, the session will continue with the tabling of the Offenders Compulsory Attendance (Amendment) Bill 2025 and Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025, respectively for first reading. The Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament is scheduled to last 24 days, and among the focus is the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan on July 31. -- BERNAMA

Kota MADANI project strategic for civil servants, says Dr Zaliha

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Bernama pic for illustration only. Kuala Lumpur: The Kota MADANI project is not cosmetic or politically motivated, but a strategic initiative to ensure the well-being of civil servants who are the backbone of the country's administration, says Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She said according to the Auditor-General's Report (LKAN) on the Management of Putrajaya's Development in 2021, Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PJHSB) was required to build 35,000 units of government quarters in Putrajaya, but currently, only 22,452 units had been built while the remainder had yet to be developed. Dr Zaliha said records from the Property Management Division (BPH) as of June 15 showed that 17,366 civil servants were still on the waiting list for government quarters, compared to only 1,449 vacant units. 'As such, to meet this demand, the government has planned the development of Kota MADANI, which involves the construction of 10,000 new government quarters. 'This development will directly benefit around 10,000 civil servants and will be implemented on 102 acres (41.27 hectares) of land in Precinct 19, Putrajaya,' she said in a written reply uploaded on the Parliament website on Tuesday (July 22). She was responding to a question from Datuk Dr Alias Razak (PN-Kuala Nerus), who asked about the basis for the selection and direction of the Kota MADANI pilot project and the government's plans to ensure that it would not merely be a cosmetic project with no real benefit to the people. Elaborating further, Dr Zaliha said the Kota MADANI concept went beyond merely providing housing and served as a model of urban development founded on pedestrian-friendly, inclusive, integrated, sustainable, and humane characteristics. In line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, she said planned public facilities would include schools, mosques, nurseries, gyms and community spaces located in close proximity to support a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. 'Kota MADANI is not a luxurious or elitist project, but one based on real needs. For the record, the concepts of compact development and vertical development have been part of Putrajaya's long-term planning since 1998, but have only now been realised through the Kota MADANI project,' she said.

CPO Futures Close Higher, Tracking Stronger Soybean Oil

CPO Futures Close Higher, Tracking Stronger Soybean Oil By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Crude palm oil (CPO) futures on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed higher on Tuesday, tracking rising soybean oil futures on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and the crude degummed soybean oil (CDSBO) market in South America overnight. Sunvin Group head of commodity research, Anilkumar Bagani, said the rapeseed oil futures traded on the Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE) and a stronger ringgit against the US dollar capped the gains in palm oil. 'According to The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), palm oil prices are expected to trade between RM4,100 to RM4,300 per tonne over the next month. The projection was driven by a strong soybean oil market and festive demand from India,' he told Bernama. Palm oil trader David Ng said the commodity's prices were boosted by stronger soybean oil and Dalian palm olein prices. 'We see support at RM4,200 and resistance at RM4,400,' he added. At the close, the spot-month August contract gained RM22 to RM4,196 per tonne, the September 2025 contract added RM30 to RM4,246, and the October 2025 contract rose RM39 to RM4,264. The November 2025 contract advanced RM42 to RM4,271, December 2025 climbed RM43 to RM4,270, and January 2026 gained RM38 to RM4,262 per tonne.
