Katie Piper's heartache after vile messages from bullies 17 years after acid attack

Daily Mirror21-04-2025
Katie Piper has revealed she's been the victim of cruel trolling as some have mistaken her acid attack scars for cosmetic procedures - telling her to 'lay off the plastic surgery'
Almost two decades on from being the victim of an acid attack, Katie Piper says she still gets strangers mistaking her scars for cosmetic procedures, with some even telling her to 'lay off the botox'.
While filming her recent TV series, Locked Up In Louisiana, Katie visited a prison in New Orleans, and faced a wave of verbal abuse from its female inmates over her injuries.

'Some of them shouted stuff like, 'Hey lady, are you addicted to Botox?' or 'Slow down on the plastic surgery',' recalls Katie, 41, during a new interview with Radio Times. She adds, 'They didn't know what had happened to me.'
In 2008, Katie was the victim of an attack orchestrated by her ex-boyfriend, where he instructed a man to throw sulphuric acid at her face - leading to the model losing sight in one eye.
The man, Stefan Sylvestre, was given a lifetime sentence for the attack, while Katie's ex-boyfriend was sentenced to 16 years in prison for planning the attack and for rape against Katie. She has had over 400 surgeries to repair the damage to her face and eyesight since.
The mum-of-two, who decided to get an artificial eye earlier this year, has since become a spokesperson for other victims of burns and began the Katie Piper Foundation, a charity to help others impacted, a year after her attack. In 2021, she was made an OBE for her services and charity work.
Now, Katie says that her past experiences earnt her the trust of prisoners in the New Orleans facility while filming for the upcoming show. However, the experience wasn't all positive as many accused her of having surgery for cosmetic reasons.

Sharing that she managed to relate to the prisoners on a deeper level while filming, the Loose Women panelist continued, 'We're all one bad day away from being locked up. You don't know what's going to happen to you in life and who's going to harm you – and how you're going to react when somebody harms you.'
Katie's experience with the prisoners isn't the first time she's been the victim of abuse for her scars, after her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing in 2018 left her to deal with horrific comments from some viewers.

'I got some really horrible abuse, it was awful. I was told 'You look like a monster' by someone one night. It's so cruel. Then someone else said, 'Thank goodness for make-up.,' she told The Mail On Sunday.
But maintaining a strong exterior, Katie reiterated at the time that she was just 'so glad to be alive' following the attack.
Now a regular on the Loose Women panel alongside her new role as a presenter, Katie has been married to carpenter Richard James Sutton since 2015.
The couple share two children, ten-year-old Belle and Penelope, six. Katie's new four-part series, Locked Up In Louisiana, comes after several other documentary-style shows fronted by the star, including Katie Piper: Jailhouse Mums. The show is set to air on 27 April on UKTV's channel U.

So grateful and just want to remind those who may need it that this too shall pass." It comes after Amy admitted that she was 'deluded' to think she was ready for a Strictly comeback. ‌ Amy continued in her latest post: "I'm forever grateful and don't ever take for granted how I'm feeling. This a reminder to live life to the fullest and to remember to check yourself. If you aren't who is going to? Early detection can save lives." Alongside the photo, she wrote: "To now, living my best life in rehearsals. Amy went on: "After my cancer diagnosis, I promised my family (and myself) that I'd take more downtime. I used to live life at 100mph, saying yes to everything and everyone. But cancer shifts your perspective. "This year I've been incredibly lucky with new job opportunities which have been full on but so rewarding and I can't wait to share all to you very soon. So having time to slow down isn't just okay – it's essential. ‌ "These past few days have been the perfect reset and I'm heading into the new season feeling recharged, happy, stronger, and HEALTHIER than ever." Amy went on to share some good news about her twin sister as she told her followers: "Also bursting with pride for my sister @becky_dowden – she was accepted into her master's program in midwifery while we were away (yes, while still working full-time in the NHS!). "I'm so proud of her and loved treating her to a well-deserved break." She concluded her lengthy caption by sharing her excitement for the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing. Amy gushed: "Feeling grateful, grounded, and SO excited for @bbcstrictly rehearsals to start tomorrow. Year 9 – let's go."

Natalie Cassidy says 'I don't miss it' as she opens up on EastEnders exit

Natalie Cassidy has opened up on her decision to leave EastEnders after playing Sonia Fowler on the BBC soap for more than three decades Natalie Cassidy confesses she "doesn't miss" EastEnders after departing the soap following more than three decades on screen. The actress initially joined the beloved BBC programme as Sonia Fowler back in 1993. ‌ The 42-year-old remained with the series for 14 years before her initial exit in 2007. She made sporadic returns before securing a permanent comeback in 2014. ‌ Yet this January saw the announcement that Natalie would be departing the soap once again, with her farewell scenes broadcasting on April 17. During that period, Natalie expressed her desire to dedicate more time to her family - fiancé Marc Humphreys and daughters Eliza, 15, and eight-year-old Joanie - whilst exploring fresh projects. ‌ Natalie has now revealed her feelings about leaving during a chat with fellow soap actress Kellie Bright. Appearing on the Life with Nat podcast, she declared: "I don't miss it, I don't. I miss the people. It's full on." The television personality went on to confess she feels positive about her decision. She added: "I do feel happier doing the things I'm doing now. I always feel like I have to say it, I loved it, I'm grateful for it but I did fall into it and that was that, and that's what I did for 30 years, I don't know if I was meant to do that." ‌ Following her departure from the programme, Natalie has penned a book about motherhood, titled Happy Days, which is scheduled for release in October, and has fronted her own consumer show on Channel 4. Her forthcoming series, Learning to Care, will feature Natalie returning to college to discover everything about becoming a carer. Throughout her three decades on EastEnders, Natalie confesses there was one particular aspect she "loved". She disclosed she would get thrilled upon receiving the scripts. She continued: "I used to love it, I loved the prep, getting the scripts. I never got bored of getting a script. I never felt bored or thought, 'Oh, here we go, we've got to undo it all and do it my way and see what's happening'. I never lost that in all of those 32 years." ‌ Prior to her departure, Natalie acknowledged feeling "guilty" about how much time she could devote to her domestic life. However, she clarified she did spend whatever free time she had with her family. Speaking to Closer magazine, Natalie confessed: "It's hard. You feel guilty about not spending more time at home, but you need to take the opportunities when they come along to earn money." She continued: "You have to accept that not every bit of your life can be perfect all the time. Any time I do have off, I'm at home with Marc and the kids." Outside her EastEnders role, Natalie has also starred in the BBC comedy Mandy in 2020 as Donna Bell and has made guest appearances on ITV's Loose Women. She has also featured on Celebrity Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing, and The Masked Singer.

But it's been a dramatic morning for our guests today, an awful lot has happened, but they're here now, it's Dooley and Clifton!" The poster for 2.22: A Ghost Story UK tour, starring the couple (Image: DAILY EXPRESS) Following their introduction, Stacey candidly opened up about the ordeal the trio had been through to make it onto Radio 2. The documentary filmmaker admitted: "I've just been painfully predictable this morning." ‌ The problems started when Minnie refused to have a shower, with Stacey confessing she had to issue her daughter with a warning, as her face was covered in food. She recalled: "We've had a couple of meltdowns at about 8 o'clock this morning, which was really fun, and then we didn't want to shower, 'I don't want a morning shower', and I said, 'you've got ravioli around your face baby, they'll take me off you!'" The drama didn't stop there, as when Stacey, Kevin, and Minnie arrived at Broadcasting House, the BBC presenter "got stuck" while trying to make her way up to Zoe's radio studio. ‌ Kevin Clifton pictured with his and Stacey's daughter, Minnie Stacey continued: "And then I got stuck in the stair lift, and your amazing producer came to save me," to which Zoe responded by telling Kevin: "There was lots of people running around past the glass Kev, and I was like, 'what's going down'?" Sharing his version of events, professional dancer Kevin said: "They were all looking for Stacey's phone, because she lost her phone downstairs, and, as we know, Stace will not get in a lift and we're, like, on the top floor of the building here. ‌ "So they had to find some secret passage to get Stacey up the stairs, it's been a real journey to get here." Kevin Clifton and Stacey Dooley first met on Strictly in 2018 (Image: BBC) Stacey cheekily interjected by joking: "I'm no hassle! I'm no hassle," with Zoe quipping: "You knew this when you got involved Kev, you knew what you were getting involved in..." Article continues below Kevin laughed and replied: "Yeah, I've got these two manic redheads who are making my life really dramatic!" 2:22 - A Ghost Story will mark the first time Stacey and Kevin have worked together since their Strictly stint, taking on the roles of Jenny and Sam in the supernatural thriller. Former Strictly pro Kevin originally shared the news via an Instagram photo of the couple, which he posted alongside the caption: "Day 1 back working with this little fella again. Last time was 7 years ago @sjdooley @222aghoststory."
