Egyptian Pavilion Beats 150 Countries to Win Award at Cannes

The Egyptian pavilion at Cannes Film Market, headed by a joint cooperation between El Gouna Film Festival, Cairo International Film Festival and the Egyptian Film Commission, has won the award for Best Pavilion during the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Awarded over competing pavilions from 150 nations, the recognition highlights the pavilion's design, curated programming, and strategic networking opportunities offered to Arab and international filmmakers.
"This award is a global recognition of the position Egyptian cinema occupies today, and of the continuous efforts we make to represent it in international contexts," Hussein Fahmy, President of Cairo International Film Festival, said. 'We made sure that the pavilion reflects the spirit of cooperation and openness to the world through a program full of dialogue, and cultural and artistic interaction, and represents a new step for Egypt's presence in the global film industry.'
Held annually in parallel with the Cannes Film Festival, Marché du Film is a key space for co-productions, distribution deals, and film financing.

Russian-Egyptian cultural night honours late Arab theatre lady Samiha Ayoub - City Lights - Life & Style
The Egyptian-Russian Friendship Association, in cooperation with the Russian Cultural Centre and the National Centre for Cinema, held a special event to commemorate 40 days since the passing of legendary Egyptian actress Samiha Ayoub, celebrating her enduring legacy as a pioneering figure in Arab theatre and her significant role in fostering cultural ties between Egypt and Russia. Prominent figures, including Ibrahim Kamel, president of the Egyptian-Russian Friendship Association; Ambassador Ezzat Saad, the association's vice president; Denis Brunikov, the acting director of the Russian House; and Ahmed Salah, head of the National Centre for Cinema, attended the event. Amal Abdel-Meguid, director of the Centre for Cinematic Culture; Khaled Shabana, deputy head of Nile Specialised Channels; veteran actress Samira Abdel-Aziz; actor Mohsen Sabry; and Mokhtar Younis, professor of directing at the Higher Institute of Cinema, were also present. ## The evening was moderated by Sherif Gad, the association's secretary-general. It began with the screening of a short documentary, The Lady of Arab Theatre, directed by Ashraf Fayek. The documentary reflected on Fayek's experience working with Ayoub and her final acting roles. Fayek highlighted Ayoub's simplicity in performance and her desire to use the film as a medium to deliver a message of awareness to younger generations. Moreover, actress Abdel-Aziz delivered a touching speech about their lifelong friendship, describing Ayoub as the one who supported her the most during the early days of her career — an emotional sentiment echoed by actor Sabry. The evening also featured the presentation of a book, The Legend of Arab Theatre, by Ayman El-Hakim, which includes Ayoub's memoirs. El-Hakim chronicled her artistic and personal journey, highlighting her deep admiration for Russian culture, particularly the Stanislavski method of actor training. Her connection to Russia was also reflected in her performances of works by Russian playwrights and her emotional bond with the country, sparked in part by the romantic letters her husband, late writer Saad El-Din Wahba, used to send daily during his long work trip to Moscow. Each letter was accompanied by photographs of Russia's iconic landmarks, fueling her desire to explore the country. Actress Samira Abdel-Aziz, author Ayman El-Hakim, with Sherif Gad, Secretary-General of the Friendship Association El-Hakim also shared stories about Ayoub's dedication to her grandson Youssef, showing how she even developed an interest in football for his sake. This went so far that she arranged a meeting with football star Mohamed Salah so Youssef could take a photo with him. Meanwhile, Kamel praised Ayoub for etching her name in the hearts of audiences across Egypt and the Arab world. He also expressed gratitude to the members of the Egyptian-Russian Friendship Association for their efforts throughout the cultural season. Ambassador Saad also emphasized that it was great to conclude the association's cultural season with a tribute to a figure who holds a deep place in the hearts of Egyptians. Furthermore, Salah thanked the Russian Cultural Centre for hosting the event, affirming that Ayoub remains a symbol of pure artistry, enlightened culture, and national conscience. Ahmed El Fishawy to Star in Film "Saffah Al-Tagamoa"
Yara Sameh Egyptian actor Ahmed El Fishawy is attached to star in the film "The Fifth Settlement Murderer" ("Saffah Al-Tagamoa"), where he plays Karim Selim, known in the media as the Saffah Al-Tagamoa. El Fishawy announced the news on social media, alongside sharing the poster of the film. "Wait for Karim in 'Saffah Al-Tagamoa," a film written and directed by Mohamed Salah Al-Azab and produced by Ahmed El Sobky," he wrote on Instagram . This is the second project to be developed about the murderer. In June 2024, Azab, the scribe of the crime TV series "Saffah Al Giza", is penning the series. The 8-episode show is produced by Ahmed El Sobky and has actor Hassan El Raddad lined up to take the lead role. In the following weeks, the bodies of the women were discovered separately, each unclothed in deserted areas in provinces outside Cairo, as their clothes were extracted in other faraway areas afterward. The autopsy reports suggest that the three women were killed by the same person, as all showed similar signs of torture, including strangulation and flogging wounds. The evidence against the perpetrator also included a fingerprint on one of the women's clothes. Laboratory tests of the components of their stomach and blood further indicated narcotics in their system. Following investigations and the examination of CCTV footage in the areas leading to the location of the bodies, security forces managed to identify and apprehend the suspect. The authorities confiscated two mobile phones and a laptop belonging to him on which he videotaped the incidents committed inside a soundproof room at his flat allocated for his practices. The videos in question showed him performing intercourse with his victims after they died. During interrogation, the suspect confessed that he knew his victims online, some of whom he claimed were courtesans. The suspect asked them to come over to his home ,where he performed unusual sexual activities with them before he forced the women to consume drugs and killed them. The suspect acquired a college degree from the most prestigious university in Egypt, the American University in Cairo, and had worked as a teacher at an international school before he quit his job.
