Gov. Kathy Hochul announced flags on all state government buildings will be flown at half-staff Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7 in honor of a state highway worker who died last week.
New York State Department of Transportation Highway Maintenance Supervisor Robert Bornt died May 30 after suffering catastrophic injuries related to a work zone intrusion in Pittstown, located just northeast of Albany, last week, according to Hochul.
"The entire NYSDOT family is grieving over the death of Highway Supervisor Robert Bornt, who spent his entire life in the service of others, protecting the traveling public through his work at the NYS Department of Transportation and making his community a better place through his dedicated work at the Hoosick Falls Fire Department," NYSDOT commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said in a written statement Thursday.
Here's what to know.
A Hoosick Falls resident, Bornt, 54, was a member of the Hoosick Falls Fire Department for 27 years, including his most recent position of fire chief, a member of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad for over 25 years and the CSEA regional union president, according to his obituary.
"Whether responding to calls or offering his knowledge and steadfast support, (Bornt) was always ready to lend a helping hand," the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad said in a May 31 Facebook post. "His commitment, generosity and service to our community left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working alongside him."
When he wasn't on duty, Bornt spent time coaching softball, hunting, riding snowmobiles and spending time with his grandson, Bentley.
Bornt is survived by his grandson, wife, Sabrina Bornt, his mother, Patricia Bornt, children Charles Hodge Bornt and Allyson Bornt, sister, Julie Bryant and several other family members.

Suspect boasted on Facebook that being wanted is the ‘adult version of hide-and-seek' - then is arrested a week later

A Texas man who boasted on Facebook that having warrants for his arrest 'is basically the adult version of hide-and-seek' was arrested days after making the bold claim, authorities said. Authorities in Mart were serving a narcotics search warrant on July 19 when they discovered that some of the people at the scene had outstanding felony warrants unrelated to the drug case. One of the suspects, identified as 54-year-old Fritz Eugene Case, shared a Facebook post a week earlier that read, 'Having warrants is basically the adult version of hide-and-seek,' the Mart Police Department said. Authorities in Mart, a small city about 18 miles east of Waco, Texas, didn't hold back on their jokes at Case's expense. 'The Mart Police Department would like to recognize Officer Crawford as a professional player of 'adult hide-and-seek,'' the department joked in a statement online. 'Officer Crawford was able to take the suspect into custody within a week of the Facebook post challenging law enforcement.' 'Law Enforcement - 1 Suspect - 0,' the post, signed by Police Chief Shane James, read. After signing off the post, James added: 'The Chief would welcome any further challenges in the game of 'hide-and-seek.'' Case was arrested on two felony warrants for forgery targeting the elderly and credit/debit card abuse targeting the elderly, according to McLennan County jail records. He was booked into the McLennan County Jail.

Former Marine Derrick Perry hailed as hero after stopping stabbing rampage at Michigan Walmart

Viral video captures the moment Perry confronts the suspect, drawing praise from Traverse City residents and social media users alike. A local former Marine is being hailed as a hero by the community for stepping in during the horrific stabbing at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, where 11 people were injured inside the store in what is being called a 'terror rampage' by local authorities. Derrick Perry, 41, who was at the Walmart with family when the stabbing occurred, pulled out his concealed firearm and held the suspect—42-year-old Bradford James Gille—at bay outside of the store until the Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies arrived. Perry is being credited with potentially saving the lives of additional victims with his quick and decisive actions. Viral cellphone footage of the incident outside shows Perry approaching Gille as he and others yell at him to throw down his knife. Traverse City Police Chief Lauren Gilbert said that Perry's quick and decisive actions may have saved lives. 'Had he not stepped in when he did, the situation could've turned much worse. He likely saved lives,' she said. At 4:43 p.m. on Saturday, local authorities began receiving phone calls of a stabbing at the Walmart. In total, 11 people were stabbed ranging in ages from 29 to 84. Seven people are in fair condition and four are in serious condition, according to NBC News. Local authorities intend to pursue a terrorism charge in addition to 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. Many people praised Perry's actions with many calling him a hero; some commenters on social media have even called for him to receive a Presidential Medal of Honor. Many cited his Marine Corps training as being vital to his willingness to step into the situation. On a Traverse City Facebook group, a woman claiming to be Perry's daughter-in-law posted that he was a hero: 'So happy to be this man's daughter in law! True hero! So proud of him for protecting so many today.' His daughter said, 'Proud daughter moment.' Most people were glad that he was getting the recognition for being the man who stepped into a dangerous situation. One commenter who seemed to know the Perry family summed up the vast majority of the response to Perry's heroic actions, saying on Facebook, 'Thank you for being selfless! You are a true hero and this town is blessed for people like you. This is what makes our town a true community! We have the best people and we will never let something like this define us!' Dog tracks missing woman's scent for miles and finds her in marsh, CT troopers say

A bloodhound tracked a missing woman's scent for miles and found her in a swampy area of a reservoir, Connecticut officials said. On July 22, bloodhounds were requested to a Glastonbury home after troopers got reports of a missing woman with Alzheimer's, according to a July 25 Facebook post by state police. A K-9 dog started at the woman's home and followed her scent for 2.7 miles, troopers said. She was eventually found in a marsh with a leg injury and unable to walk, troopers said. Troopers were able to transport the woman from the woods, and she was sent to a local hospital for treatment, the state police said. Glastonbury is about a 10-mile drive southeast from Hartford.
