Judge: Kohberger trial 'likely' to stay on schedule
Hippler heard arguments from the murder suspect's attorney Anne Taylor regarding her motion to delay the trial. Taylor argued Kohberger's constitutional rights would be violated if the trial begins in two months.
Hippler also heard counterarguments from Josh Hurwit, a special deputy prosecuting attorney.
Hippler said he would take the matter under advisement, but urged the attorneys to proceed as if the trial will start Aug. 11 as scheduled.
"As of now I would tell you that it's likely you're going to trial on the date indicated," he said.
Kohberger faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in the Nov. 13, 2022, stabbing deaths of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.
Taylor and her team filed a motion to continue May 20, which asked the judge to postpone the trial.
On Wednesday, she said it is necessary to protect several of Kohberger's constitutional rights, including his right to a fair trial, due process and a fair sentencing.
It has been 2 1/2 years since Kohberger's arrest, but Taylor said they are still reviewing the 68 terabytes of information and multiple requests for discovery associated with the investigation.

Childers was a former professional baseball player, spending 2009 and 2010 in the Baltimore Orioles farm system. After retiring from the sport, he worked as a Cobb County police officer and received a lifetime achievement award for saving lives, per a GoFundMe established to help his family. "We are devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Chase," GoFundMe organizer Jordan Wicker said. "It feels surreal, incredibly hard to grasp, and profoundly unfair.' The post contained a photo of Childers standing outdoors for a professional family photoshoot. 'Chase was a truly selfless individual, always prioritizing the safety of others above his own," his family said in a statement to WCDB. "Without hesitation, he would leap into action whenever someone was in need, ready to tackle any challenge that came his way. Law enforcement officials said this has been the fifth drowning on Pawleys Island since June 2023 and the second in the past month, the news station reported. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — A home belonging to Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte was burglarized during the Major League Baseball All-Star break, according to police. Scottsdale, Arizona, police confirmed that the department is investigating a 'high-dollar residential burglary' that is believed to have happened on Tuesday night, which is when Marte was playing for the National League in its All-Star game win in Atlanta. Numerous personal items and jewelry were stolen. No one was at home when the burglary occured. Police said the home is 'reportedly' owned by Marte. Maricopa County Assessor's Office records show Marte owns a home on the block near the investigation. Police say the investigation is ongoing. Marte hit a two-run double in the first inning of the NL's win, which was secured after a home run contest at the end of the game after the score was tied after nine innings. The burglary is the latest in a series of thefts from the homes of high-profile athletes acoross the country this year. Players have been targeted because of the high-end products believed to be in their homes and sometimes the thefts occur when they are away with their teams for road games. The FBI has warned sports leagues about crime organizations targeting professional athletes. The NFL and NBA have issued security alerts to athletes. An additional 13 people were injured, and their ages range from 7 to 61 years old. Around 7:15 p.m. local time, Jackson Police were alerted that lightning struck several people and one person was administered CPR at the Black Knight Bowbenders archery range, Jackson Police Chief Matthew Kunz said, per NBC News. "It was insanely loud, and the Earth... like the Earth exploded and it was dirt flying, flying everywhere," Grodzki told ABC 7.
