Devon-based Supacat says it is 'fighting a bit of a battle' to access finance — despite the popularity of the 7.6-ton bruiser which can tackle the roughest, bumpiest terrain.

The Jackal, which Sun Business Editor Ashley Armstrong took for a spin, can carry 2.1 tons of cargo, such as missile launchers, medical supplies and drone killers.
Supacat — which exports worldwide, making around £40million a year — recently won a new contract from the British Army.
But it is shunned by some investors, who consider defence firms unethical as they do not have 'B Corp' status.
CEO Nick Ames said the defence industry has not been 'top of the popularity tree' for more than a decade.
And he said Supacat was unlikely to list in London to raise funds.
He added: 'The City has for years said we, 'Don't do that sort of thing'. You'd like to see a lot more activity and liquidity on the AIM (Alternative Investment Market). You're more liquid as a business.'

With global politics becoming increasingly fragile, the Government plans to increase military spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP within two years.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Defence Secretary John Healey have pledged to give more of the Ministry of Defence budget to smaller British companies, such as Supacat.
The firm, which employs 250, is known to many because Jeremy Clarkson uses one of its ex-Army six-wheelers to get around his Diddly Squat farm.
Phil Applegarth, head of Supacat, said: 'For the first time in our lives defence spending, which has always been cut, is rising.

'To get in on this ride up we need skilled people, enthusiastic people who aren't frightened to go and join defence firms rather than be shoe-horned into B Corp.
'There is a real sense of pride in working on what we do. We're making something that is vital. It's keeping our forces safe.'
He added: 'We need to build up capability now to be the deterrent that prevents a potential war.'
Mr Applegarth said the defence industry was waiting for the Government to outline its Strategic Defence Review, which is delaying investment.
He added: 'There seems to be a desire to wait rather than keep going and then change.
'You're hearing a lot of top-level speeches saying, 'Prepare, prepare' but the best we could have is longer-term contracts. The longer it is, the more we can invest in resources and skills.
'The current spiky ordering doesn't help as we have to keep getting fresh prices from the supply chain — switching the supply chain on and off rather than keeping it warm and running.'
BAE TO RECRUIT 2,400 WORKERS
DEFENCE giant BAE wants to hire 2,400 apprentices, graduates and undergrads this year as it gears up to meet soaring demand.
It has also shrugged off the threat of President Donald Trump's tariffs, insisting it builds systems for the US Department of Defense in its US factories with a domestic supply chain.
BAE said yesterday it expected to grow sales by up to 9 per cent and earnings 10 per cent as it wins more contracts for combat aircraft and vehicles, missile systems, artillery, sensor technology and drones.

THE Government's Clean Power push looks increasingly far-fetched after a Danish firm axed a major offshore wind project, blaming higher costs.
Orsted said it will not go ahead with its Hornsea project, where 180 wind turbines off the Yorkshire coast were to power millions of homes.
It is a blow to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband's desire to quadruple the number of offshore wind farms by 2030.
Orsted's chief exec Rasmus Errboe said that the project was unlikely to provide value for money because of 'increased supply chain costs, higher interest rates and increased execution risk'.
Andy Mayer, analyst at the Institute of Economic Affairs, said: 'It is a reminder of the folly of legally binding climate targets.
"The Government's plan to decarbonise the power grid by 2030 denies real trade-offs between lower emissions, energy security and affordability.'

Dave Brailsford is back leading Ineos Grenadiers on the hunt for Tour de France stage wins
It has been only a month since Dave Brailsford was jettisoned from his role as Manchester United auditor, having ruffled plenty of feathers in the corridors of Old Trafford and Carrington in his bid to revive a great sporting institution. Now the former cycling supremo is back in the saddle just in time for the Tour de France as Ineos Grenadiers seek their own renaissance. 'He's like a kid in a sweet shop, talking about climbs and getting back to the mountains,' revealed team CEO John Allert. 'That's the battlefield that he knows and loves. We have welcomed him back into the team with open arms. He's a not-so-secret weapon for us to use and we plan on using him to the fullest extent we can.' Brailsford spearheaded British Cycling's Olympic success in Beijing and London before taking charge of Team Sky and masterminding their domination of the Tour during the 20-teens, winning the race with Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome four times, Geraint Thomas and then Egan Bernal under the Ineos rebrand, although the glorious era was tainted by accusations the team 'crossed an ethical line'. His arrival at Old Trafford was not universally appreciated, and he clashed with staff at the club during his efforts to improve processes behind the scenes. Now Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has redeployed Brailsford to his beleaguered cycling team, who are without a grand tour win in four years and have little hope of claiming the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, which begins in Lille on Saturday. The long-term task to regenerate the team as regular Tour de France podium-botherers is enormous after losing so much ground to the modern alphas of the peloton, Visma Lease-a-Bike and UAE Team Emirates. 'It's obvious we want to win the Tour, but there's no point just saying you want to win it,' said Allert. 'We've got to do more than we're doing, clearly, to get better than the people that are dominating it at the moment.' But in the short term, winning a couple of stages at this year's race would at least show that Ineos can compete and come out on top, if not over three weeks then in selected moments. 'Winning stages is going to be really important,' added sport director Zak Dempster. 'I think we need to be realistic in GC [general classification], but I think we need to be brave and bold and move the race where we can, and hopefully take time in creative ways. It's no secret that, face to face, there are guys who are stronger than us, that's the reality. But at the same time if we're smart then nothing's out of the question in terms of GC.' Thomas is riding in his final Tour and will largely play a support role behind team leader Carlos Rodriguez, who finished fifth two years ago, although the 39-year-old Welshman would love one last stage win to go with the three on his palmares from 2017 and 2018, the year he won the yellow jersey. 'I'd love to be competitive and go for a stage, a stage win would be amazing,' Thomas said. 'You've got to be in super great condition for that. And then obviously being alongside Carlos deep into the mountains and helping him as much as I can, off the bike as much as on it. He knows what he's doing anyway, but I think just playing a role in the team of just trying to share my wisdom – sounds a bit... but you know what I mean.' Thomas abandoned last month's Tour de Suisse after twisting his knee in a crash, but played down concerns over his fitness before the race. 'I got my foot caught and twisted, and I also hurt my hamstring and calf. The idea was to rest up properly and be ready to go again rather than continue to race and possibly make it worse or tweak something else. I got some good training in afterwards behind the motorbike, I've done the best I could. 'It was frustrating because it would have been nice to see exactly where I was at compared to everyone else rather than just training. But no issues now.' Ineos's best chance of a stage win may come in the first of two individual time trials on this year's course, through Italian time-trial specialist Filippo Ganna, who has seven stage wins at the Giro d'Italia and one at the Vuelta a Espana, but still needs a victory at the Tour de France to complete the grand-tour set. 'Maybe the first days we try to be more conservative, try to go all-in for the TT, and then after that's the start 100 per cent of my Tour,' Ganna saiI would like to try [and win a stage]. Major food brand that sold household staple in Asda & Ocado went bust owing £22MILLION in debt
A UK-BASED food firm that supplied a popular product to supermarkets has gone into administration. The company provided over 3,000 British shops with fresh basil and salad mixes. 2 Major farming start-up Jones Food, which is backed by Ocado, officially entered administration in April. The vertical farming trailblazer has previously been hailed as a game-changer for Britain's farming industry. This set-up has allowed vegetables to be picked next door to delivery depots, offering shoppers access to fresher than ever produce. However, the farming venture has struggled after Ocado signalled that it was not willing to provide more cash to the start-up. After failing to find a new backer, the company is unlikely to recoup the millions of pounds it pumped into the start-up. Costs of adminstration This includes £8.6 million of initial investment in 2019 and a £3.7 million cash injection in 2023. Filings for Jones Food's administration suggest Ocado could be facing a loss of over £20 million. Administrators for the start-up said funds from the sale of the business' assets would go toward paying off expenses and creditors. This marks another setback for Ocado, which has been battling to stem losses and churn out more cash in the face of higher debt costs. It has made heavy cuts to its research team in an attempt to help boost profit and was recently hit by a tripling of its debt interest costs after refinancing looming bonds. Mighty Drinks Enters Administration: What Went Wrong for the Plant-Based Brand? Ocado Group Ocado made a series of investments into tech start-ups in an attempt to break away form its image as an online grocer. The company struck a deal with M&S in early 2019 to run the online grocer Ocado Retail as a joint venture. Since then, Ocado Group has been focused on its robotic warehouses, which it has sold to other companies including Kroger in the US. The collapse of Jones Food comes just over a year after the start-up opened its second vertical farm. Ocado had said the farm was a 'coming-of-age for agricultural technology in the UK'. What does going into administration mean? WHEN a company enters into administration, all control is passed to an appointed administrator. The administrator has to leverage the company's assets and business to repay creditors any outstanding debts. Once a company enters administration, a "moratorium" is put in place which means no legal action can be taken against it. Administrators write to your creditors and Companies House to say they've been appointed. They try to stop the company from being liquidated (closing down), and if it can't it pays as much of a company's debts from its remaining assets. The administrator has eight weeks to write a statement explaining what they plan to do to move the business forward. This must be sent to creditors, employees and Companies House and invite them to approve or amend the plans at a meeting. A Notice of Intention is used to inform concerning parties that a company intends to enter administration. It is a physical document which is submitted to court, usually by directors aiming to prevent a company from being liquidated. Like with a standard administration process, a Notice of Intention stops creditors from taking out any legal action over a company while they try and rectify the business. It desribed Jones Food as having 'cracked the code for accessible, sustainable, premium food being grown all-year-round, at a super-competitive price'. The farm provided herbs including basil, coriander, and flat-leaf parsley for Ocado and Asda. However, vertical farming start-ups, which involves growing food on shelves, have struggled to become profitable. In filings for Jones Food, administrators said it was loss-making as soon as it was operational. They said this is because it was running at around a third or half of its factories' capacity, and demand from customers was variable. 'Jones Food is an innovative business, and Ocado Group has been a supporter and shareholder of the company for a number of years," Ocado said at the time of the administration. "As we await the outcome of the administration process, our thoughts are with all those involved with Jones Food.' More business stories And a major drinks brand sold in Asda, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons has also gone into administration. The UK's biggest music retailer also closed its doors last month.
