Hebrew Media: Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa Held Direct Meeting with Israeli Officials in Baku - Jordan News

Jordan Newsa day ago
Hebrew Media: Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa Held Direct Meeting with Israeli Officials in Baku Israeli news outlet i24NEWS reported, citing a well-informed Syrian source, that Syria's transitional president Ahmed Al-Sharaa participated in at least one direct meeting with Israeli officials on Saturday in Baku, Azerbaijan. The report contradicts official Syrian media claims that Al-Sharaa had no contact with the Israeli side. اضافة اعلان The source, described as close to President Al-Sharaa, stated that the meeting was part of two or three rounds of talks, attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani and government security coordination official Ahmed Al-Dallati. The Israeli delegation reportedly included a special envoy of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alongside high-ranking military and security officials. According to the source, the talks explored a potential security agreement addressing: Iranian military presence in Syria and Lebanon Hezbollah's armament Palestinian factions Refugee camps in Lebanon The future of Palestinian refugees from Gaza The possibility of establishing an Israeli coordination office in Damascus—non-diplomatic in nature The choice of Azerbaijan as the meeting location was seen as a political signal to Iran, amid increasing tensions between Tehran and Damascus in recent weeks. Official Syrian Denial Despite the media reports, Syrian state newspaper Al-Watan cited official sources denying any meetings between Al-Sharaa and Israeli representatives. The sources insisted the discussions in Baku fall within a "de-escalation strategy", not normalization, and said "talks of a peace agreement are premature." Meanwhile, Israeli broadcaster KAN confirmed a direct meeting occurred Saturday in Baku, with Syrian demands focused on an Israeli military withdrawal from southern Syria and other coordination matters. KAN also noted a potential upcoming meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani and Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa'ar in Brussels, hosted by the European Union, although no confirmation has been made regarding a separate bilateral session. Background and Strategic Goals A diplomatic source in Damascus indicated the talks primarily focus on Israel's expanded military presence in southern Syria, a result of developments following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime over seven months ago. President Al-Sharaa had previously acknowledged in May that his government was holding indirect talks with Israel through intermediaries to prevent further escalation and loss of control. These statements were echoed by Israeli outlets such as Channel 12 and Haaretz, which referenced direct meetings held in Baku, some involving Turkish officials. Azerbaijan has increasingly emerged as a neutral diplomatic platform due to its close ties with Israel and political coordination with Turkey, making it a central player in undisclosed regional negotiations on Syria. In recent months, President Al-Sharaa met with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Riyadh, leading to the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Damascus. He also expressed openness to regional stabilization initiatives during a joint conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. — (Agencies)

Representing King .. Patriarch Theophilos III delivers speech during solidarity visit Ramallah

Ammon News - Representing His Majesty King Abdullah II, Patriarch Theophilos III, patriarch of the Holy City and all Palestine and Jordan, delivered a speech on Monday during a solidarity visit to Taybeh, east of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, following escalating attacks by Israeli settlers that threaten one of the Holy Land's Christian heritage sites. In the speech, His Majesty condemned recent attacks by Israeli settlers on the historic Church of Saint George (Al-Khader) and the Christian cemetery in the town of Taybeh, where they set fire near the cemetery, as a barbaric and flagrant violation of the sanctity of the dead, Christian holy sites, and Christian presence in the Holy Land. The enormity of attacks, the settlers' daily terrorizing of Palestinians, and systematic assaults against dozens of villages, cities, and refugee camps in the occupied Palestinian territories require a firm international response to halt the aggression, particularly the genocide against children, women, the elderly, and civilians in the Gaza Strip, the King said. His Majesty called for protection of unarmed Palestinians, their holy sites and the right to live in freedom and dignity and establish their state on their national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital. A delegation of the Council of Patriarchs and Heads of Christian Churches in Jerusalem joined in the visit, along with the pastor of the Latin Monastery Church in Taybeh, Father Bashar Fawadleh, Jordanian Ambassador to the State of Palestine, Issam Al-Bdour and Taybeh Mayor, Suleiman Khoury. During the visit to Al-Khader St. George Church, one of the most ancient churches in Palestine, and Taybeh Christian cemetery and lands threatened with confiscation by the Israeli occupation authorities, the delegation were briefed on settler attacks on the town, its lands, property, and Christian holy sites. The Council of Patriarchs and Heads of Christian Churches in Jerusalem demanded that settlers who perpetrated attacks against the church and cemetery be held accountable, and said the Israeli occupation authorities is fully responsible for facilitating such attacks. They also called for protection of Christian holy sites in the town in particular and the Palestinian territories in general, and an investigation to punish the extremist settlers for the violations against Taybeh, the city of Christ. In an interview with Petra's reporter in Ramallah, Taybeh Mayor Suleiman Khoury commended His Majesty's support of the Palestinians and the Jordanian government and people for their stand with Taybeh during "these difficult circumstances that were imposed by the occupation authority and the settlers and targeted the Christian presence in Palestine. Khoury said His Majesty's speech and the visit of the church delegation had an impact in supporting the people of Taybeh, raising their morale, and strengthening their resilience in the face of barbaric assaults. Jordanian Civil Defense Controls Forest Fires in Syria with Ground, Air Coordination - Jordan News

Jordanian Civil Defense firefighting teams deployed in Syria have successfully contained forest fires within their designated areas of responsibility, following intensive operations coordinated with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. اضافة اعلان The Civil Defense teams executed a systematic ground response strategy, supported by aerial interventions from Royal Jordanian Air Force pilots. Their operational plan focused first on containing fire spread to new areas, followed by suppression and cooling measures to prevent flare-ups, while swiftly addressing smaller fires reignited by strong winds. Among the main challenges encountered, Commander of the Jordanian Civil Defense mission in Syria, Lieutenant Colonel Muhannad Ajrami, cited difficult terrain, high wind speeds, and the presence of unexploded ordnance. He noted that these obstacles were mitigated through the expertise of specialized Jordanian teams with extensive field experience, who also shared their knowledge with other participating forces as part of what he described as Jordan's humanitarian commitment toward the Syrian people. The Jordanian teams are operating alongside the Syrian Civil Defense and firefighting contingents from other friendly nations. Ajrami underscored the critical role played by Royal Jordanian Air Force pilots in harmonized coordination with ground operations to ensure effective fire suppression. He affirmed the high morale and well-being of the deployed personnel, expressing gratitude for the ongoing support and attention from His Majesty King Abdullah II and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah. Ajrami noted that recent remarks by Crown Prince Al Hussein on his personal social media account had a significant motivational impact on the officers and non-commissioned officers involved, reinforcing their determination to continue their humanitarian mission. He also conveyed appreciation to Jordanians for their supportive messages and expressions of national solidarity, reflecting a strong spirit of unity and backing for the humanitarian efforts of the Civil Defense teams.

Israeli Forces Continue Shelling and Demolishing Buildings in Gaza - Jordan News

Israeli Forces Continue Shelling and Demolishing Buildings in Gaza Israeli occupation forces intensified their military operations across the Gaza Strip early Monday, targeting residential areas and infrastructure in a renewed escalation. اضافة اعلان Artillery shelling and machine gun fire were reported in the vicinity of the Al-Maslakh area, west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, according to local Palestinian sources. Simultaneously, the Israeli army carried out controlled demolitions of an entire residential block in the Saudi neighborhood west of Rafah, also in the southern part of the Strip. On the 647th day of the ongoing war, Gaza's hospitals confirmed that at least 95 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since dawn Sunday, with 52 casualties reported in Gaza City alone. The continuous bombardment and systematic destruction come amid severe humanitarian conditions, with the population facing extreme shortages of food, medicine, and shelter, and mounting civilian casualties. This latest escalation underscores the ongoing devastation in the Gaza Strip as international efforts to broker a ceasefire remain inconclusive.
