Madelene Sagstrom opens with 65 at LA Championship after closing with first tournament ace
Madelene Sagstrom ended the first round of the JM Eagle LA Championship with her first – ever – tournament ace. The recent winner of the T-Mobile Match Play in Las Vegas opened the LA Championship with a 7-under 65. The hole-in-one occurred on the par-3 ninth from 120 yards.
"It got really cold our last three holes so I was – I have the shot that I play, we call it a 2-2-2, and it's like a little lower wind shot," said Sagstrom.
"I'm like, you know, I don't think I can reach with my pitching wedge right now. Let's hit a little 2-2-2-9. It was perfect. I hit it really well. It would've been good anyway, but I was like, nope, it went in, and I was like, oh, did that just happen?"
And the celebration?
"I wish I was that athletic but I'm not," she said. "Well, I think I threw my hands up in the air and I was very excited. No, I don't know. It's weird because I actually got to see it. That's the best part. You get to see it go in."
While her driver isn't as dialed in as she'd like, Sagstrom said momentum on the greens has carried over from Vegas. She's also trying to carry on a "match play mentality" of letting go of bad shots and moving on quickly.
Sagstrom trails former AIG Women's British Open champion Ashleigh Buhai, who shot 63, by two strokes and sits tied with three-time major winner In Gee Chun. World No. 1 Nelly Korda trails by four.
Amateur Asterisk Talley, 16, opened with a 69 at El Caballero Country Club, where she was a finalist at the U.S. Girls' Junior last summer.

UFC Faces Pressure as Ilia Topuria's Next Opponent Narrowed to 3 Possibilities

UFC Faces Pressure as Ilia Topuria's Next Opponent Narrowed to 3 Possibilities originally appeared on Athlon Sports. UFC 317 delivered a jaw-dropping moment when Ilia Topuria landed a thunderous right hook that shut the lights out on Charles Oliveira. The knockout not only stunned the T-Mobile Arena but also shifted the landscape of the UFC's lightweight division. Now a double champion, Topuria's meteoric rise has ignited serious debate over who deserves to challenge him next—and the UFC may be feeling the heat. Advertisement With the lightweight belt now around Topuria's waist, a chain reaction is inevitable. The promotion is under pressure to satisfy top contenders, media expectations, and fan demand. Dana WhiteGettyImages At the center of it all is Arman Tsarukyan. The 28-year-old Armenian is the division's No. 1 contender and served as backup for UFC 317's main event. With a grinding grappling style and a recent win over Oliveira at UFC 300, logic says Tsarukyan should be next. One fan even put it bluntly: 'Anyone who doesn't say Arman is literally insane.' But as we've learned—nothing is guaranteed. Arman TsarukyanGetty Images Enter Justin Gaethje. The 36-year-old former interim champ, currently ranked No. 3, isn't staying quiet. He recently bounced back in his rematch with Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313, securing a key victory that reminded fans why he's still a major threat in the division. Advertisement That said, not everyone agrees—one fan dismissed the idea entirely, saying: 'Gaethje shouldn't even be considered.' His manager, Ali Abdelaziz, recently claimed that Gaethje might retire if he doesn't get the next shot, citing disrespect after being passed over in favor of Oliveira. Justin GaethjeGetty Images Then there's the wildcard: Paddy Pimblett. The 30-year-old, ranked No. 8 and fresh off a high-profile victory over Michael Chandler, the undefeated British star brings massive attention and has history with Topuria. Paddy PimblettGetty Images The two have exchanged heated words in the past, and Topuria has expressed interest in making the fight happen. 'He's a hypocrite… I hate him. … If I could choose a fight, I would fight him because I hate him.' Quotes from both fighters have circulated online, adding fuel to the fire and hype to the potential. Advertisement Many believe that Pimblett is the bigger money fight for the UFC, with mainstream appeal and massive fan engagement. One fan captured the fan-first sentiment perfectly: 'Don't really care about 'deserves'. Put the Baddy in there!' Ilia TopuriaGetty Images UFC President Dana White and his team have their hands completely full. With three compelling candidates and rising tension, the next move is critical. But one thing is certain—whatever direction they go, Ilia Topuria's next fight is guaranteed to be must-see TV. Watch: Dinosaurs dash for the finish line in T-Rex World Championship Races

July 3 (UPI) -- More than 300 people donned inflatable dinosaur costumes and took to the track at Emerald Downs in Washington for the annual T-Rex World Championship Races. The yearly event at the Auburn racetrack began when TriGuard Pest Control held it as a team-building exercise in 2017, and the race quickly gained popularity online and opened to the public the next year. The race was suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but made a return in 2022. Houston man Andrew Stuber was crowned the top Tyrannosaurus in this year's race. This year's T-Rex World Championship Races also featured an aerial event -- three people in T-Rex costumes jumped out of a Skydive Snohomish plane and parachuted down to the field before racing to the finish line. The full event is set to be aired on ESPN 2 sometime later in the summer.
