Rape accusations against cricket star overshadow Australia's tour of the West Indies
The West Indies are just two days away from the start of the second Test as accusations of sexual misconduct hang over one of their stars.
Reports in a South American newspaper claim that 11 women are among the alleged victims, including a teenager.
It's understood that no charges have been filed against the player.
Speaking on Wednesday morning, West Indies coach and former star Daren Sammy responded to the allegations.
'We are all aware of what's been going on in the media. I'm very close to my players. I've had conversations with them,' Sammy said.
'One thing I could say is, we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served.
'However there's a process. And as you say, there's allegations and we will continue to support in whatever way we can, to make sure that due process and the right system is followed.
'As now, it's allegations. We know the justice system, you've got to wait for things to process.
'I'm not a judge, I'm not a prosecutor… You've got to go through right channels, hearsay or allegations is just allegation.'
When asked is Cricket West Indies was doing an investigation, Sammy couldn't confirm.
'I can't answer to that to be honest,' he said.
'I'm pretty sure they are doing all what they can to make sure the right process is followed.'
The alleged victims in the case have hired lawyer Nigel Hughes to represent them.
Hughes told Caribbean media that the evidence is 'pretty strong'.
'The allegations that were levelled by the victim were levelled two years ago,' Hughes said.
'An investigation was conducted and we understand that there were recommendations by the Office of Public Prosecutions to institute charges.
'I think the evidence is pretty strong in relation to what is happening here.'

A drug-affected car thief who ran over and killed a young policeman while trying to escape arrest will spend more than a decade in prison. Reagan Ainslie Chown, 25, was convicted of manslaughter over the late-night June 8, 2023 incident that led to Constable Anthony Woods' death in Ascot, east Perth. He was sentenced in the Western Australian Supreme Court on Thursday to a head sentence of 15 years and six months, and a minimum term of 13 years and six months. Const Woods' mother Natalie said her heart was 'ripped' away the day her son died. 'My beautiful son Anthony was so full of life, energy and ambition,' she said as she read her victim impact statement to the court. 'He was doing his duty and he was protecting his community and his future was taken away.' Ms Woods said her family continued to suffer and 'each anniversary, birthday and any moment we shared with him is now painful for us'. 'Whatever he did, he had a great passion... he was larger than life, but his love for his family was number one,' she said. Chown and two others fled from police in a stolen Holden Cruz in a high-speed chase before turning into a cul-de-sac and coming to a stop. Const Woods, 28, opened the driver's door and tried to detain Chown, who was behind the steering wheel with the engine running. Chown put the car into reverse and accelerated in a bid to escape. The officer fired his Taser into the moving car before falling and being dragged under the vehicle, where he became trapped. CCTV footage played during the trial in May showed the Holden reversing at speed, mounting a kerb and stopping after it hit a bollard. During the video, Const Woods can be heard twice saying 'stay where you are' and 'Taser' as the vehicle moved backwards. The officer died several days after the incident from complications of cardiac arrest caused by mechanical compression of the chest and abdomen. Chown was under the influence of methamphetamine and in possession of the drug when the incident happened. During his trial, he argued he was not responsible for the tragedy because the officer shot him with a Taser and it caused him to lose control of a stolen car. Justice Joseph McGrath said Chown intended to flee police and ignored the officer's lawful commands. 'Undoubtedly, the Taser caused you pain and discomfort, but your course of conduct was set and it was done consciously and deliberately,' he said. 'Even if you were not tasered, you would have reversed and that was your intention.' Const Woods, who had just passed his probation, was farewelled before about 2,000 police officers, family, friends and dignitaries at Perth's Optus Stadium. Chown was initially accused of murder but the charge was downgraded to manslaughter a week before his trial. He was also convicted of stealing the car and reckless driving to escape police and was also sentenced for those offences.

Brand-new $828million footy stadium is facing being shut down for SIX WEEKS due to shocking problem
Allianz Stadium officials have told Sydney FC to prepare for the prospect of the $828million venue being unavailable for part of the summer if a report calls for a significant fix to drainage issues. Less than three years after the opening of Australia's most expensive rectangular stadium build, an investigation is continuing into repeated problems with the field. Venues NSW, who operate the ground, expect to have the outcome of that report by the end of this month. Multiple scenarios are being worked through for the potential fix of the issue, as officials attempt to identify at which layer of the turf build the problem exists. The most extreme scenario would be if the issue was found to exist in the stadium's underground drainage. It could take at least six weeks to rebuild the profile of the drain and turf. 'The comprehensive review into the playing surface and drainage system at Allianz Stadium is expected to be finalised later this month,' a Venues NSW spokesperson said. 'As we are awaiting the results of the investigation, no decision has been made on what remediation works are required.' It's understood that Sydney FC would most likely play matches at Leichhardt Oval if Allianz was to become unavailable. That would create significant commercial hurdles. The Sky Blues are already unable to use Allianz when it is required for major concerts, with two scheduled for mid-December. The situation comes as the playing surface at the adjacent SCG, also managed by Venues NSW, was slammed after last week's AFL match between Sydney and the Western Bulldogs. Allianz Stadium only re-opened in September 2022, but eyebrows were raised last May when large puddles were on the surface for a Waratahs-Brumbies rugby match. Clint Gutherson then described the water-logged field as one of the worst he had ever played on after an NRL fixture in August, prompting a review. After initially being relaid during the 2023-24 summer, new turf was again put down last summer before more drainage issues in the opening round of the NRL. Further work was completed to stitch artificial grass into the turf to aid with drainage, before water pooling returned amid heavy rain at women's State of Origin in May. It's understood previous testing on the turf had shown the presence of silt, a granular material often found in rivers which can reduce water flow and impacts drainage. The turf farm used to supply the surface for Allianz Stadium and most Venues NSW grounds is based close to the Hawkesbury River. That river flooded multiple times in the months before the 2022 install. Turf from the same suppliers and farm has been used to re-lay other stadiums since then, without the same drainage issues. The review comes as Independent MP Mark Latham has raised a litany of questions regarding the Allianz Stadium, Venues NSW and the surface in NSW Parliament over the past month.

Owen Farrell in line for Lions call-up to Australia after Elliot Daly arm injury
Andy Farrell is understood to be on the verge of calling up his son Owen to join the British & Irish Lions squad in Australia as a replacement for Elliot Daly who is set to be ruled out of the tour with a broken forearm. Farrell jnr, consequently, is in line to feature on his fourth Lions expedition at the age of 33. With 112 caps for England and six Lions Test appearances, there is no question about Farrell's big game experience nor his relentless competitive edge. He has endured an injury-plagued Top 14 season at Racing 92, however, and has not played international rugby since the end of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. In January last year Farrell announced he was stepping away from Test rugby to 'prioritise his and his family's mental wellbeing' but his father suggested when the squad was announced that the door could yet re-open. Sure enough, the Guardian understands that Daly's injury has now prompted a call-up for the Lions' prodigal son. From a practical perspective Farrell jnr offers an extra set of tactical eyes, the ability to operate at both 10 and 12 and plentiful goal-kicking expertise. His call-up is a calculated risk, even so, because of the jolt it will deliver to the squad's other fly-halves at a critical stage of the tour. It also raises the question of whether Farrell snr is entirely happy with all aspects of the build-up to the Test series. The versatile Daly was one of only three players on the trip who toured New Zealand in 2017, the last time fans were allowed into the stadiums. The head coach believes the level of attention around the Test series will be on another level to anything the younger tour members have previously experienced. With his Saracens team-mate Maro Itoje leading the Lions, Farrell will certainly be warmly welcomed into the fold by his erstwhile England colleagues. On the flip side it may raise doubts over Finn Russell's status as the senior fly-half and could be interpreted as a lack of faith in youthful alternatives such as Marcus Smith and Finn Smith should Russell ever be sidelined. The Scotland fly-half was replaced after 51 minutes against the Reds but Farrell Snr stressed there were no injury concerns. Those who know Farrell best, though, have long since admired his influence in the dressing-room. 'He turned into our head coach, he is that good,' the former Saracens and England captain Jamie George once told the Guardian. 'With his voice, with his actions, in the week the way he prepares, he shows people how it is done. I can't speak highly enough of him. He is the best player I have worked with in every facet of the game.' England, however, opted not to take Farrell on tour to Argentina where George Ford is set to win his 100th Test cap this weekend. Ford was also in fine form during the latter stages of the domestic Premiership season but, for now, has been passed over once again by the Lions. It remains to be seen exactly when Farrell would be be ready to feature in Australia. The touring team face the NSW Waratahs in Sydney this Saturday before meeting the ACT Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday and a combined AUNZ Invitational XV in Adelaide the following Saturday. The first Test against the Wallabies will take place in Brisbane on 19 July.
