Fresh wake-up call to boost security at congregations

It was a tragic Sunday for three pilgrims, including two women, who lost their lives in a stampede near Shree Gundicha temple during a ceremony pertaining to the Rath Yatra festivities. It is rather unfortunate that lessons have not been learnt from past experiences. The Puri episode is not an isolated case. Alas, the authorities, especially those organising festivities of a high magnitude, apparently do not understand the relevance of the 'once bitten twice shy' sermons. India is a country where millions flock to venues where massive rituals are organised, perhaps in the fond hope of getting spiritual bliss and moments of peace away from the rough and tumble of everyday problems and stress-causing happenings. It is this divine rejuvenation that draws them, especially the disturbed minds, to religious events. What is baffling is that despite many fatal incidents being reported from time to time, the authorities keep their eyes, and ears, closed as if it was business as usual. To put it more bluntly, they lack a humane mindset as they seem unmoved by fatalities in major public events, although most of the horrific incidents were largely because of their own incompetence. If human lives were so dear to them, nay the government of the day, they could come up with measures that help avoid these tragedies. Instead of mending their approaches, the authorities just indulge in the dubious blame-game and do precious little thereafter. This is even though fatal stampedes have become commonplace. It is quite possible that the governments do not bother about chalking out effective alternative fool-proof solutions because it is the faces in the crowd, the man in the street, who get killed but not any VVIP. One wonders what these lethargic officials do if, God forbid, a celebrity or top leader falls victim in such tragic incidents. Of course, the government of the day comes up with lame excuses like 'the crowd turnout was unparalleled this time' and announce compensations to the grieving kin of the victim, while subsequently making a scapegoat of a low-ranking officer for the tragedy. They never accept their follies like woeful crowd management shortcomings and insipid security apparatus. Stampedes, including non-religious congregations, have turned deadly across years and decades like during the satsang at Hathras; at the famed Mata Vaishno Devi shrine; at a bathing spot on the banks of the Godavari river during 'Pushkaram' festival in Rajahmundry; Navratri festivities near Ratangarh temple in Datia district; during the Chhath Puja on the banks of river Ganga in Patna; in Haridwar on the banks of the Ganga river; at least 104 Sabarimala devotees were killed in a stampede when a jeep crashed into homebound pilgrims at Pulmedu; at Ram Janki temple of Kripalu Maharaj in UP's Pratapgarh district, while nearly 250 devotees were killed in a stampede following rumours of a bomb going off at Chamunda Devi temple in Jodhpur. Meanwhile, the Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has 'magnanimously' transferred the District Collector and SP while also suspending a DCP and a Commandant, who he squarely blamed for the Puri fracas. It is debatable if such a 'punishment' will serve any purpose and ensure that man-made calamities do not strike into the future. After all, Indians lack discipline when it comes to having darshan of the deity, which inevitably leads to unmanageable chaos. Majhi's punishment makes one wonder if it is the same land where Lal Bahadur Shastri and Madhavrao Scindia had resigned as railway and civil aviation ministers, respectively, owning moral responsibility for accidents that happened during their tenure.

Man opens fire in Agra, held in Lucknow after 350km chase

1 2 3 Lucknow: In a dramatic chain of events spanning over 350 kilometres, a man who opened fire in Agra was chased down and arrested by Lucknow Police after a high-speed getaway on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. The shooter, astonishingly, turned out to be a 45-year-old LIC agent, Pankaj Kumar Singh, from Azamgarh. According to officials, Pankaj fired multiple rounds from his licensed .32 calibre Nirbheek MK-IV revolver in a public area of Agra, causing panic among bystanders. Soon after the firing, he fled in a grey car (DL 4C AW 7152) along with his associate, Yogesh Chauhan (45), a resident of Aaml Kheda, Agra. Acting on an all-points alert under Operation All-Out, police teams in Lucknow began rigorous highway checks. The car was first intercepted near a toll barrier on the outskirts of Lucknow. Yogesh, seated on the passenger side, was detained immediately. But as police began questioning, Pankaj suddenly switched to the driver's seat, smashed through the toll boom, waved his revolver at the cops, and sped away in a daring escape. Unfazed, the Lucknow Commissionerate's surveillance team tracked his movements in real-time using mobile tracking. Police teams from Manaknagar and Kakori laid a second trap near R.K. Marriage Lawn. This time, the car was successfully intercepted. Pankaj was caught, and his weapon—used in the Agra firing—was seized along with three empty shell casings. "During interrogation, he confessed to the firing incident in Agra and admitted trying to flee via the Expressway. He had allegedly booked the vehicle via a local vendor and used it for both travel and escape. Agra Police confirmed that a case has been lodged at Tajganj police station and have taken custody of the accused for further proceedings," said joint commissioner (law and order) Babloo Kumar. The accused confessed to have opened multiple fires to impress bystanders.

Oppn attacks govt over tragedy; Committed to taking action against those responsible: Min

1 2 Bhubaneswar: Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka on Monday called for the resignation of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi as the political blame game intensified over the stampede in Puri on Sunday, which killed three persons. Senior BJD MLA Prasanna Acharya criticised the govt for its casual approach to the sacred event. Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan countered the opposition by pointing out the govt promptly responded to the tragedy and is committed to taking stringent action against whomever is found guilty. Addressing a news conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Ulaka described the Puri stampede as a 'man-made disaster' and accused the govt of prioritising VIP movements over the safety of devotees and deities. "Transfer and suspension of some officials is not enough. The CM must resign," Ulaka said. Ulaka and Congress member Arabinda Das said the BJP govt in Odisha reduced the Rath Yatra of Mahaprabhu Jagannath into a stage-managed political event. They alleged political workers took over the arrangements, pushing the administration to the backseat. Congress members raised suspicion over the exact number of deaths and reiterated their demand for a judicial probe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo BJD's Acharya, who is deputy leader of opposition in the state assembly, said the lack of sincerity on the part of the govt was glaring. "There was a clear lack of coordination among govt agencies and poor supervision by the political leadership. It was an utter and complete failure," Acharya told media persons, asking the govt to take urgent corrective action. "The govt must conduct a fair probe, make the inquiry report public, and put in place mechanisms to ensure such lapses don't recur," he said. Harichandan asked the opposition to refrain from politicising the tragedy. "It was an unfortunate incident. The CM has already apologised before the devotees. Whoever is responsible for the incident will face stringent action," he said. Pointing out that an administrative inquiry by development commissioner Anu Garg has already been ordered, the minister said the report will come in 30 days. "Steps will be taken to prevent such incidents," he said.
