Transnet executives Molefe, Gama and two others granted bail [VIDEO]
Four former Transnet executives have been granted bail of R50 000 each with conditions.
Transnet executives, Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama, the company's former CFO, Anoj Singh, and top engineer, Thamsanqa Jiyane, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court in Ekurhuleni on Monday.

Molefe and Gama were arrested after surrendering to police on Monday morning. Singh and Jiyane were also handcuffed on the same day.
The state did not oppose bail.

As calls grow for Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane to be removed for failing to deliver on the department's basic responsibilities, the minister said it is the prerogative of President Cyril Ramaphosa to redeploy her.
Nkabane has come under fire after being embroiled in allegations of corruption and the illegal appointment of the Seta board, including accusations that she misled Parliament by providing false information about the procedure for appointing Seta chairs — a list dominated by ANC cadres — and about the composition of the panel that made the appointments.

Vultures lead rangers to one of SANParks' largest poisoning events
South African National Parks recorded one of the largest vulture poisoning events in Southern Africa on 6 May 2025. A total of 116 vultures were found dead at the scene in the Kruger National Park, and 84 were retrieved alive.
Andrew Desmat, Mahlangeni section ranger where the poisoning incident occurred, painted a picture of the state of the scene on the infamous day.

'The way we found the scene was due to the vultures; we could see that there was a feeding event at this location. There were three or four birds that had tracking devices that landed here,' Andrew said.

Counterfeit Breitling, Springboks and Sundowns: massive confiscation by police
Police seized counterfeit and illicit goods worth more than R156 million. Springboks jersey and caps were among the items seized by police. Picture: Saps. Breitling watches, Springboks jerseys and caps and Mamelodi Sundowns tops were among the counterfeit and illicit goods worth more than R156 million seized by police during nationwide operations in recent weeks. The operations were led by the National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods unit, with support from Public Order Policing (POP), the South African Revenue Services (SARS) Customs and Enforcement team, counterfeit depot officials, brand protectors, and private security personnel. Seizure Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said in the past three weeks, the integrated team executed search-and-seizure warrants targeting shops in Marabastad, Mokopane, Mbombela, Bela Bela, Mookghopong, and Modimolle. 'During these takedowns, the team seized more than 23 000 items imitating high-end designer brands that include clothing, shoes, bags, caps, and watches, as well as counterfeit jewellery, sunglasses, perfumes, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. 'Also amongst the seized items are sports apparel that bears the Springboks trademark and other well-known brands. These counterfeit items were seized outside Mbombela stadium and Loftus stadium respectively during recent Springbok rugby games against visiting countries,' van Wyks said. Breitling watches, Springboks jerseys and caps and Mamelodi Sundowns tops were among the counterfeit and illicit goods worth more than R156 million seized by police during nationwide operations in recent weeks. 'The Counterfeit Goods Act aims to combat the trade in counterfeit goods by protecting trademarks, copyrights, and certain mark owners from the unlawful use of their intellectual property on goods and preventing such counterfeit goods from entering the market. 'Saps remains committed to eradicating the illegal trade in counterfeit goods in an effort to protect consumers, support legitimate businesses, and ensure the integrity of South Africa's economy,' van Wyk said. Rolexes Last month, police seized fake products, including Louis Vuitton, Gucci, high-end sneakers and Rolexes valued at more than R19 million. Six foreign nationals were also arrested during separate takedown operations in Bloemfontein. Van Wyk said search and seizure warrants were executed in accordance with the Customs and Excise Act at targeted shops in the Bloemfontein CBD. Will Mkhwanazi accept gift of cows from the public?
KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been promised two cows from a fundraising initiative that raised close to R50 000 by his supporters. But is he permitted to accept it as a gesture of gratitude? Earlier this month, notorious X troll Chris Excel launched a crowdfunding initiative to gift Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi two cows as a 'token of appreciation.' The initiative was a hit, raising R44 000 for the top cop who went public with allegations of corruption within the police department. While some have claimed that accepting the gift would equate to 'bribery', officials say otherwise. KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, told The South African that police may accept gifts, for any reason, provided that they declare that it is not a gratification. 'There is a gift register in the SAPS that police officers sign to declare all gifts', he said. According to Excel, the BackaBuddy funds will be released once Mkhwanazi publicly acknowledges the gesture. Meanwhile, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has garnered widespread support – from the public to political parties – around South Africa. 'Hands off Mkhwanazi' has been a trending topic on social media, with many publicly pledging to support the KZN commissioner.
