AAP MLAs barred from PAC meet
The PAC was constituted to examine the CAG reports tabled in the Vidhan Sabha earlier in March. Its members include BJP MLAs Ajay Mahawar (Chairman), Arvinder Singh Lovely, Kailash Gahlot, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Satish Upadhyay, and Shikha Rai. AAP MLAs—Leader of Opposition Atishi, Kuldeep Kumar, and Virendra Singh Kadiyan—are also part of the panel.
PAC Chairman Ajay Mahawar alleged disruptions and violent behaviour by opposition members, including LoP Atishi, during the last committee sitting in a written complaint.
It was also noted that during the first sitting on May 22, the AAP members—led by Atishi—questioned the committee's authority to examine CAG reports in light of the GNCTD (Amendment) Act, 2021. They demanded the Law Department's opinion before the proceedings could continue.
This confrontation is part of a broader debate over the scope and authority of Assembly Committees following the 2021 amendment. Responding to Atishi's letter dated May 6, Speaker Gupta defended the amendments, stating they were essential due to past misuse of committee powers. He asserted that while committees must operate within legal boundaries, they retain sufficient authority under the Constitution and Assembly Rules, including the power to examine all CAG reports. In his communication, he said Assembly Committees play a critical role in ensuring accountability and transparency in governance, and 'their powers cannot be nullified by administrative interpretations.'

Nearly 200 arrested in Assam's massive crackdown on Cattle Preservation Act violation
GUWAHATI: Nearly 200 people were arrested and a large quantity of suspected beef was seized over the past two days in Assam during a statewide drive against alleged violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. The drive was launched to verify reports about illegal cattle slaughter and unauthorised sale of beef in restaurants and eateries, the police said. Altogether, 196 people were arrested from different parts of the state. The police further stated that the drive will continue in the coming days. Two days ago, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had expressed deep concerns over incidents of cow slaughter. He stated that 1,400 cows were killed during Eid in the name of 'qurbani' in lower Assam's Dhubri town. The consumption of beef is not illegal in Assam, but the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 prohibits the sale and consumption of beef in public places, in areas with a large population of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and other non-beef-eating communities, and within a radius of 5 km from any temple or similar institutions. '…No person shall transport or offer for transport or cause to be transported any cattle without valid permit from any place of other state through Assam to any place outside the state of Assam, or from any place within the state of Assam to any place outside the state of Assam where slaughter of cattle is not regulated by law,' the law says. It adds that the competent authority may issue a permit for transport of cattle for agricultural or animal husbandry purposes. The drive comes amid a controversy surrounding the alleged sale of 90 Gir cows to individuals, including a minister's wife and some elected members of the BJP. The state government had procured 300 Gir cows earlier for the Gorukhuti dairy project. The Congress on Wednesday demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into alleged corruption in the project.

HC dismisses petitions pertaining to Tiruchendur temple consecration
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday dismissed a batch of petitions that sought a direction to authorities to conduct the consecration of Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur by using Tamil spiritual mantras and hymns equally. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete took cognisance of the counter affidavit filed by the Joint Commissioner / Executive Officer of the Temple. It was submitted that consecration will be conducted by using Tamil spiritual mantras and hymns. Dismissing the petitions, the court observed that the petitioners are unable to establish any right for the grant of the relief. In the absence of any right, the court cannot issue any direction. The procedures contemplated under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act and Rules are to be followed for administering temple functions. If there is no provision, then the government or the Commissioner should recognise certain practices, as the case may be, which were prevailing in a particular temple. However, such disputed claims cannot be decided by the court. These are all certain affairs, which are all to be considered by the HR & CE Department or the officers empowered under the provisions of the Act, the court observed. The court said that the petitioners are at liberty to approach the Commissioner for redressal of their grievance. On receipt of the representation, the Commissioner should look into it and take an appropriate decision. There cannot be any discrimination in the matter of treating the devotees or permitting the devotees to equally participate in the temple festival.

Amid mounting backlash over US President Donald Trump's reported plans to deport naturalized citizens, a viral petition on MoveOn, a progressive advocacy platform, called for the deportation of First Lady Melania Trump, her parents, and son Barron Trump--arguing that Trump's own family should not be exempted from the policies he championed. The petition stated, "Since Trump wants to deport naturalized citizens, I believe it is only fair that Melania and her parents are on the first boat out. In addition, Melania's anchor baby, Baron, should be forced to leave as well because we know that his mother's mother was born in a different country. That is part of the criteria that Trump is putting into place. Your mother's mother has to have been born in the United States and we know Melania's mother was born elsewhere. If it's good for one, it's good for all! There should be no exceptions! On the first boat or flight out!" The petition further argued that the move would prevent perceptions of favoritism, adding, "If this is truly about national security, then Melania needs to go!" The remarks reflected growing public frustration over what many viewed as double standards in Trump's deportation agenda. According to Fox News, the petition surfaced just days after Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters, during an anti-DOGE protest in Los Angeles on March 25, suggested that Trump should investigate and potentially deport Melania Trump. "When he [Trump] talks about birthright, and he's going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America. If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania," Waters was seen saying from the stage, various videos posted on social media showed, Fox News reported. She added, "We don't know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look." According to Fox News, her remarks were met with loud cheers from protestors at the rally, which focused on opposing Trump's federal government downsizing agenda. Fox News also reported that Melania Trump, born in the former Yugoslavia, became a US citizen in 2006. She was the first US first lady to become a naturalized citizen and the second to be born outside the United States, after Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams, wife of President John Quincy Adams. In 2018, The New York Times reported that Melania sponsored her parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, for green cards and later citizenship. Amalija Knavs passed away in 2024, while Viktor Knavs has been seen at recent public events with the Trump family. Waters' comments came in response to an executive order signed by Trump on his first day in office that aimed to reinterpret the 14th Amendment and restrict birthright citizenship. The order, currently under judicial review, seeks to exclude individuals born to undocumented immigrants or parents on temporary visas from automatic US citizenship. During the March 25 protest, Waters joined hundreds marching to the VA hospital on Los Angeles' Wilshire Boulevard. She declared, "We are here because we are not going to let Trump, we're not going to let Elon Musk, his co-president, or anybody else take the United States Constitution down." Her remarks on Melania Trump quickly spread on social media platforms like TikTok and X, drawing sharp criticism from conservatives.
