Did Cowboys waste $7.5 million in acquiring this former 1st-round pick?
Dallas hopes this isn't the case for linebacker Kenneth Murray, who will be the best-paid player in his position group heading into 2025. The Cowboys decided to take the financial cost on, hoping Murray's first-round pedigree will shine in the hands of noted linebacker-whisperer Matt Eberflus, the club's new defensive coordinator. The Cowboys had the cap space and the cash to spare, so the gamble seems worth the risk.

Profile
The Cowboys already have a star linebacker; DeMarvion Overshown just can't stay on the field. The former Texas Longhorn is a heat-seeking missle, capable of sideline-to-sideline pursuit and rushing the QB. But with his 2025 debut date up in the air due to a second ACL injury, the club had to bring in some help. Along with Overshown's injury, the team's leading 2024 tackler Eric Kendricks was seen as a perfect fit for Mike Zimmer's group, but apparently wasn't of interest to Eberflus.
Dallas swapped inconsequential Day 3 picks with Tennessee to bring in Murray, who played just one season for the Titans. The cost was more financial, as he's set to count $7.4 million against Dallas' 2025 cap due to $6 million in base salary and $1.5 million in bonus money. Dallas also signed LB Jack Sanborn as a free agent, and there's a strong possibility he is given the authority of starting middle linebacker that will allow Murray to be in more a outside backer role.
The Cowboys do have some young talent at the position in second-year pro Marist Liafau and fourth-year player Damone Clark. Liafau showed relatively well in spurts as a rookie, and could be surprise competition for Murray's snaps. And if Overshown shows his remarkable recovery abilities yet again, Murray might really need to step up his game to not be a liability on the field. His play diagnosis is the biggest knock on him, so that will more likely be the area of emphasis for his new coaching staff to improve on.

Lions' starting DT Levi Onwuzurike will miss 2025 season with torn ACL
Last season, injuries derailed a season with Super Bowl expectations for the Detroit Lions. This season is already off to a troubling start for the Lions' defense. Defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike will miss the 2025-26 season with a torn ACL, head coach Dan Campbell announced on Sunday. It was a "significant" injury, in Campbell's words, and Onwuzurike has already undergone surgery to repair the tear. The Lions were already missing defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who tore his ACL in Week 15's loss to the Buffalo Bills last season. He'll begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list and could return toward the end of the year. Onwuzurike has struggled with injuries ever since Detroit made him their second-round draft pick in 2021 out of Washington. He missed the entire 2022 campaign with a back injury that required spinal fusion surgery. However, he finally broke through with a solid 2024-25 season, playing 16 games and starting 10. He notched 28 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits and a tackle for loss. Campbell says he's still confident in the Lions' depth on the defensive line. The team drafted Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams in the first round (No. 28 overall), who should start on the interior line alongside DJ Reader. Williams had 46 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his senior season with the Buckeyes. "You don't like to lose anybody," Campbell said, via the Detroit Free Press. "Certainly, losing Levi, that hurts, but it helps that we've got Tyleik, so we've got a little bit of balance here." "All in all, I think we're pretty good," he added. "I like what we got in that room and really there again, man, we got an opportunity for a lot of guys." Roy Lopez, Pat O'Connor and Chris Smith are expected to contribute at defensive tackle. Meanwhile, the Lions are expected to get Aidan Hutchinson back on the edge, coming back from a broken leg. He should start at defensive end along with Marcus Davenport. The team is also looking at bringing back Za'Darius Smith, whom Detroit traded for last season but eventually cut. Detroit has also been in discussions with veteran edge rusher Matthew Judon, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Taylor Decker had shoulder surgery, Lions hope he practices after Hall of Fame game
The news that defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike will miss the season with a torn ACL was the biggest headline of head coach Dan Campbell's Sunday press conference, but he provided several other injury updates as well. Left tackle Taylor Decker was placed on the physically unable to perform list upon reporting to training camp and Campbell said that he is recovering from shoulder surgery. Campbell said that the hope is that Decker will be able to start practicing after the Lions face the Chargers in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio on July 31. 'We feel like there's a good chance we can get [Decker] back after the Hall of Fame Game,' Decker said, via the team's website. 'He's good. Just cleaned up his shoulder a little bit and we're going to work him back in when he's ready to go. He's in a good place.' The wait is set to be a bit longer for defensive end Josh Paschal. Paschal is on the non-football injury list and Campbell, who did not share the nature of Paschal's injury, does not expect him to practice until September.

Lions' Dan Campbell announces injury updates on Taylor Decker, Josh Paschal
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered a few injury updates on Sunday ahead of the first practice of training camp. Offensive tackle Taylor Decker and defensive end Josh Paschal were among them. The biggest injury update of the day was for defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, who Campbell revealed has been ruled out for the 2025 campaign due to an ACL injury, the specifics of which we don't have yet. "Levi's out for the year," Campbell announced. "Levi's surgery, it was significant but it needed to be done. Out of his control and it needed to be done. So he will miss the season." For a Lions team that was ravaged by serious injuries in 2024, this is an ominous start. Onwuzurike was slated to play a top reserve role once again in 2025, but because of the ACL injury to Alim McNeill, who may not be ready for Week 1, Onwuzurike could've began the year as the starter. Now, a look at the injury updates for Paschal and Decker. Taylor Decker injury update Decker was unexpectedly placed on the active/physically unable to perform list to begin training camp due to an undisclosed injury. Campbell did not go into specifics on Decker's injury but did note that the veteran had a clean-up procedure and should be back after the Hall of Fame Game, The Athletic's Colton Pouncy reported. Josh Paschal injury update As for Paschal, he's currently on the non-football injury list with an undisclosed issue. Again, Campbell didn't go into specifics but did say the former second-rounder will take "just a tick longer" to get back and gave a timeline of "probably early September," according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
