Roger Mitchell tears into Celtic over fan behaviour in Como

Glasgow Times26-07-2025
The club are in Italy for the Como Cup, a pre-season tournament that also features Ajax, Al Ahli and Como.
Celtic supporters clashed with Ajax fans during their match on Thursday, leading the 'Italian Celts CSC' to release a statement.
Mitchell recently weighed in. He is a Celtic fan who lives in Como and runs a sports investment company, as well as a major sports conference that takes place annually by the lake.
He said on X: "What a total mess my club has got itself into.
"Some of us (not many) did try to warn them to leave politics alone. They come here, and make headlines for getting banned from stadia (DASPO). And cry 'unfair'.

"In truth, they are becoming an unwelcome guest. Just play football. People are entitled to view Gaza from many different angles. It's been a dispute for millennia. Both sides have grievances.
"What is unacceptable is that my club accepts zero latitude of view. And demands to stuff their dogma down everyone else's throat. Not in my name.
"Please don't come back to Como. You are like those students unfurling flags at graduation ceremonies. Spoiling a very important day for everyone else.
"When Iran and its vassals like Hamas recognise the right of Israel to exist, we can have a grown-up discussion on politics."
Celtic take on Al Ahli in their second and final Como Cup outing tonight.

Celtic and Rangers Champions League play-off dates confirmed

The Champions League play-off dates for Celtic and Rangers have been confirmed by UEFA. The draw in Nyon on Monday morning laid out the possible path to the September group stages for both Old Firm sides. Celtic went into the seeded Champions Path side of the draw and will hope to reach the revamped group stages once more. Last season, they emerged from the single 36-team table with a 21st-place finish. The Parkhead side were knocked in heartbreaking fashion after Bayern Munich scored in injury time to win their play-off tie 3-2 on aggregate. They will face either Kairat or Slovan Bratislava in the play-off, with the first leg at Parkhead, on Wednesday, August 20, and the return leg a week later on Tuesday, August 26. To reach the play-off stage, Russell Martin's side must first defeat Viktoria Plzen, whom they host on Tuesday night, before the return leg on August 12. Rangers have been drawn against Austrian side RB Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium, and could face them on Tuesday, August 19, with the return leg a week later on Wednesday, August 27. The winner of the third round tie will play the first leg at home. Celtic, and Rangers, should they get there, will be allowed to postpone their Scottish Premiership fixture scheduled between both legs of the play-off tie following an SPFL rule change. 'A deflected pot shot away from the hardest-earned of points'

In the last 190 minutes or so of football the Saints have played at Celtic Park, the home side have led for a combined eight minutes. As a percentage, that's roughly the same conversion rate as Adam Idah on the weekend's are arguments that would contend opening your season account away to the reigning champion on flag day is "sub-optimal" and I'd give them some weight. However, I think it suited Stephen Robinson and I'll tell you is tradition, the Buddies have not had it all their own way in the League Cup group stage. Bedding in a healthy number of new signings and arriving after only the briefest of Spain-based fitness whirlwinds, the Saints took two games to find their stride. This near-annual mountain to climb seems to disproportionately affect our side and can create just a little disquiet to commence a lost five of the side who just scraped to a third consecutive top-half finish, this disquiet can amplify the voices of those who panic early and decide that this is the season where it all falls battling performance against a side of substantial means, and almost all of the possession, was peak Robinson. Former England star Joe Hart in shock career revelation after almost turning pro in another sport

FORMER England star Joe Hart reveals he could have become a professional cricket player. The shot-stopper, who retired last year following a spell at Celtic, was a handy left-arm seamer in his day. 3 3 3 His talent saw him picked up by the Worcestershire academy but Hart decided football would be a better career path. Hart, 38, was also part of the Shrewsbury Town set-up in his youth and began to be selected for the matchday squad before he had even sat his GCSEs. The former keeper recently appeared on BBC Test Match Special where he revealed his cricketing past. He said: "I played at a good level. I was part of the Worcestshire academy when that first started to come about. "But I was always playing a lot of football as well and this was the time when cricket wasn't just in the summer it was becoming an all-year round type of sport so it was difficult." Hart was asked if someone sat him down to discuss his options as a teenager, but he revealed the decision to pursue football was one he made, and really it was a no brainer. He continued: "I was a lot further down the line (in football). I was playing for Shrewsbury Town in League Two and I was involved with the first-team from 14, 15-years-old. "They had more of a structure, so when you turn 16 you sign schoolboy forms and you almost train professionally. "You're a professional footballer from 16 so that pathway was there. They were very encouraging, I had been on the bench when 14/15. "I just felt there was more of a pathway there for me football wise and cricket's a really difficult sport to be in. You have to be at a top top level just to make a living in the game. Guehi & Eze to STAY at Palace? Transfer Blow for Liverpool & Arsenal! "And I don't think I was that good. I was decent, like many people out there, but was I going to go to the next level? I don't know. And in football it felt like I had a lot of people who knew a lot about me telling me I need to stay in this sport because you've got a chance." Hart once showed off his talents in a game of cricket with his Tottenham team-mates in 2020, and he bowled Harry Kane. And one of his former pals at Worcestershire, Jack Shantry, believes he would have made it as a cricketer. The former Worcestershire bowler said: "He could have gone further, definitely. "This isn't with any faux humility, but he was a better cricketer than me at the same age. If he wanted to, he could have made it." Ed Foster, another teammate at club level and with Worcestershire's academy, adds: "If he'd have carried on and had the glut of cricket that you can get if you want it from 17 through to 19 or 20, I'm sure he would probably have been in and around the England Under-19 setup – and who knows where he would have gone from there? "He had all the raw materials, and where he's got to in football shows he's got enough between his ears to be able to put his physical aspects to good use. "I'm sure he would have given himself an opportunity, for sure."
