August bank holiday in Mayo – Top five things to do
Here are five of the best things to do in the land of Michael Davitt and Grainne Uaile this August Bank Holiday weekend:
Castlebar Music Festival
Don McClean wasn't singing about Castlebar when he referred to 'the day the music died' in 'American Pie'. The town, once renowned for the Castlebar International Song Contest and the Castlebar Blues Festival, will put itself back on the cultural map with its busiest festival in years when the brand-new Castlebar Music Festival rolls into the county town.
Headlined by AC/DC and Queen tribute acts, the festival will see more than 20 acts play indoor venues throughout Castlebar all weekend, starting on Friday, August 1. The main event will see six acts play at a day-long hooley at Hoban's car park right in the heart of the county town on Sunday, August 3.
If all goes well, this festival will be touching the Richter scale.
A full programme of events can be found at castlebarsummerfest.com.
Bonniconlon Agricultural Show
This is not just any agricultural show, mark our words.
From humble beginnings in the early 1950s, the Bonniconlon Agricultural Show has grown to become the biggest of its in Connacht and the second-biggest agricultural show in Ireland.
Come hell or high water, the guts of 30,000 people flock to north Mayo village on the first Monday of August each year.
With music from country music stars Mike Denver and Michael English, a €60,000 prize fund and dozens upon dozens of stands on 200-acre site showcasing every sort of machine, gadget, goose, hen and heifer one could imagine, the Bonniconlon Show is up there with the best agricultural shows in the world.

ABBA Sensations
Oasis are back – as the world and its mother knows. However, with the legendary Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson having ruled out an ABBA reunion tour, a tribute act is the best bet for ABBA superfans.
ABBA Sensations are no strangers to Mayo or the TF, which they played as recently as April 2024. This weekend, they are back in Connacht's biggest indoor music venue paying homage to Swedish pop royalty who need no introduction.
Expect almost-as-good-as the original renditions of 'Dancing Queen', 'Gimme Gimme', 'Voulez Vouz', 'Take A Chance' and so many more on Sunday, August 3.
Tickets can be purchased on www.tfroyal.ie.
A Taste of Inishturk
Missed the first weekend of 'A Taste of Inishturk? Never fear. The month long-festival on one of Mayo's smallest inhabited islands has plenty in store for those willing to take the ferry out from Roonagh and wave all their cares goodbye this Bank Holiday weekend.
As the name implies, 'A Taste of Inishturk' celebrates the cuisine of the Wild Atlantic Way.
But there's plenty to do there before you taste the mackerel and chips in Caher View Restaurant. Like marvelling at Mayo's most scenic GAA pitch, the majestic cliffs and sea stacks, or the Napoleonic Signal Tower at the summit of Knoclackan Mountain.
On Saturday, August 2, at 9pm, Clew Bay-based vocal group Coda will play the Inishturk Community Club, followed by tunes from Jonny Moran on Sunday at 2pm in the same venue.
With its sights, sounds and tastes, there's simply nowhere on earth like Inishturk.
More information on 'A Taste of Inishturk' can be found on www.inishturkisland.com.
Newport Grainne Uaile Festival
Could you possibly pack any more into a three-day festival?
With everything from trad sessions, face painting, balloon modelling, a sheep shearing exhibition, a boxty-making demonstration, a barbeque, a pirate parade, open air concerts, bingo, busking, water sports, novelty races, guided historical tours and a fishing competition, you'd do well to find a more eventful festival than the Newport Grainne Uaile Festival.
Named after the famous pirate queen who ruled the waters of Clew Bay, this festival has become near unmissable.
The best part? It's totally free.
The Newport Grainne Uaile Festival takes place from Friday August 1 to Sunday August 3.

‘I think about the concert every day' – Oasis fans splurge at Dublin pop-up store as merchandise prices revealed
With less than two weeks until Liam and Noel Gallagher arrive in Ireland, there were long queues of fans waiting to enter the store on Bank Holiday Monday to buy the official merchandise of the Oasis Live '25 tour. Located at 133 St Stephen's Green, at the former site of The Well pub, the store will remain open until August 17. In the store, fans can get Oasis t-shirts, ranging in prices from €40 to €55, exclusive vinyls from €40 to €50, hoodies from €75, tote bags for €25, bucket hats for €30, or various Oasis posters for €12. There is also a special Adidas x Oasis collaboration available in the store, with hoodies ranging in prices from €65 to €80, and t-shirts for €55. Sam Hurley from Dún Laoghaire, who was leaving the store with his new Oasis bucket hat, said he's "so excited" to go to the Saturday date in Croke Park. "I'm so excited, I'm even worried about when it's gonna be over, what I'm going to do. I think about it every day," he told the Irish Independent. He said "it was a bit surreal" when he found out the Oasis were getting back together for a comeback tour. After visiting the pop-up store, he said: "It's good to see people getting all the merch in, everyone wearing the t-shirts. I've seen [the videos of] the gigs, everyone's wearing the same stuff, it feels like everyone's together." "Looking forward to [the concert]. Can't wait," he said. Anne-Marie Burns and Alan Rice from Dublin, who were also successful in securing tickets for the Saturday night, came out of the store with a few Oasis t-shirts. "It was great, we came in to get some t-shirts and nice little things for the concert," Ms Burns said. An Oasis fan of 25 years, Mr Rice said he "was lucky" to get the tickets for the gig and it was "amazing" to see the band reuniting for the tour. "I actually was lucky [with getting tickets]. I got into the ballot the night before. Still wasn't guaranteed, but delighted to have got them. I'm absolutely delighted." Josh Flynn and Ava Guiden from Waterford said they are "delighted" to head to the Sunday concert. Mr Flynn, who has been an Oasis fan for a long time, said he "grew up with their music" and his father is a "huge fan" of the band. He said the prices of the merchandise in the store were "alright", adding he "thought they were going to be worse". They bought a some t-shirts and two posters in the store. Meanwhile, Tiernagh McManus from Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, who has been an Oasis fan for a long time, was "disappointed" not to get tickets for any of the concerts. "I tried my hardest to get me and my family tickets, and I was online for hours before they even went on sale, and couldn't get them. "[The pop-up store] was class. I definitely recommend people to go in. The atmosphere in there with the music was really good." Oasis will hit the Croke Park stage on Saturday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17.

10 easy-to-watch series you can binge this Bank Holiday
While many people are ready to dive into a mammoth binge session when a Bank Holiday rolls around, others prefer some easy viewing. From rewatching come classic sitcoms to exploring some new series that should be on your watchlist, you truly have an abundance of options to beat the Sunday scaries and relax in style. Here's 10 series we here at think you should be watching this Bank Holiday Weekend. This multi-award winning comedy is always high up our list for a rewatch, and with episodes not being too long, you can easliy rewatch the whole series in less than a week. For those who have never seen it, the series stars father and son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy as the wealthy Rose family who lose all their money and are forced to go live in the town of Schitt's Creek. Ahead of the second season arriving on August 6, what better time to either watch or rewatch season one of Wednesday? The young Addams is changing school and will be attending Nevermore Academy for the semester. While she tries to not live in her parents' acedemic shadows, she uncovers a murder mystery that only she can solve. Based on the film of the same name, this Tina Fey-co-created series has eight 30-minute episodes, meaning you can knock out the first season in on night. The series follows six friends who meet up every season and how their lives change over the course of a year. The show has already been renewed for a second season and we couldn't recommend it more. A series that had viewers gripped from the first episode was the Disney+ series Paradise starring Sterling K Brown and James Marsden. It's a show that is hard to describe without spoiling the mega plot-twist in the conclusion of the first episode, but we'll just say it stars a Secret Service agent who is in charge of protecting the President of the United States and… well… things go wrong. Another show that has a new season incoming is the massively popular Only Murders in the Building which has taken the true crime podcast trope and made a fictional series out of it. Starring Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, with some megastar cameos and supporting cast each season, there are four seasons for fans to feed their murder mystery appetites now streaming, and season five lands September 9. While it's been 15 years since the show ended, Scrubs is still a popular series for a rewatch. And, considering it's getting a reboot with many of the main cast returning, what better time to pop it back on the telly? Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag was the show everyone was going crazy for when it was airing, and even though it's only two seasons with a total of 12 episodes, it's a must-see show. The show is adapted from Waller-Bridge's 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe one-woman play of the same name (which won a Fringe First Award) and introduced the world to Andrew Scott's Hot Priest. Based on the book series by Lee Childs, Reacher stars Alan Ritchson as the titular character who always seems to find himself getting into trouble and needing to help solve a mystery or two. The series has three seasons now streaming, and the fourth is currently in production. A show that might have gone under the radar is The Big Door Prize which stars our very own Chris O'Dowd and follows the residents of a small town which is changed when a mysterious machine appears that promises to reveal everyone's true potential. Similar to many of the shows on this list, it's only 30-minutes an episode and has two seasons now streaming, but alas, that's your lot. This entry might be the most difficult to get a hold of in the Rep of Ireland without a VPN, but the UK version of Ghosts is definitely worth the effort and has five seasons to watch. The show follows a group of ghosts from different historical periods haunting a country house while sharing it with its new living occupants, and stars a slew of familiar faces from the British comedy scene such as Taskmaster alumni Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Mathew Baynton, and Lolly Adefope.

'Cheeky' moment at Galway Races leaves viewers in hysterics
The Galway Races got a glimpse of a 'full moon' as its Summer Festival concluded over the August Bank Holiday weekend. One Racing TV viewer was on the ball as he started recording a group of lads horsing around behind the camera at the perfect time. After a bit of messing, one of the seemingly middle-aged men turned around and pulled down his trousers to reveal his bare backside to the camera. @ronniesquibb Started videoing these boys laughing at the state of them then looked what happened 😂😂. #horseracing #racingtv #horsesoftiktok #horserace #horseraces ♬ original sound – Ronnie Squibb The viewer recording the moment burst out laughing and remarked: 'What a legend. I can't believe I got that on video.' He captioned the post on TikTok: 'Started videoing these boys laughing at the state of them then looked what happened .' Only a day after posting the clip, the user already received over 40,000 likes on TikTok. Naturally, the comments have been flooded with the classic puns associated with a 'mooning'. One user wrote: 'There's a crack in ur tv mate', while another added: 'There's a full moon coming.' Other comments included: 'think u have a 'split' screen TV mate', 'Cracking day out', 'he's only having the crack' and 'what's the crack at the racing'. The clip has been shared over 20,000 times in just one day. The Galway Races Summer Festival concluded over the weekend. Pic: INPHO/Laszlo Geczo It wasn't the first occasion of the festival that left people in stitches after RTE's Teresa Mannion shared a hilarious video of a high heel getting caught in a storm drain. Teresa gave an impromptu interview to the woman, who was trying to pull the heel out of the drain, with her tagging the designers Manolo Blahnik — whose heels fetch prices of around €600. 'A trapped designer heel, recycled hat, former Ladies Day winner turned judge,' Teresa wrote. 'It's all happening at the Galway Races. Winners to be announced later this afternoon.' Incredibly, this isn't the first time that such designer shoes were discarded in the streets of Galway, as back in 2023 Teresa spoke to security at the festival; who said that they found a pair of Manolo Blahnik stilettos in the bin. 'Security staff at Ballybrit were bemused to find a pair of designer shoes worth 660 euros dumped in a bin!' Teresa tweeted. 'Even a pair of #ManoloBlahniks couldn't sustain a lady at the #GalwayRaces.' People were left in stitches at the dumping of the shoes – which, according to racecourse security, were left after a woman gave them to her partner, who then put them in the bin as she continued barefoot. 'The boom is back (for a select few only) hope the ladies kept them tbh [to be honest],' one person tweeted, while another joked 'Carrie Bradshaw would never' – a nod to the fact that a blue version of the suede stiletto were made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker's character in Sex and the City.'
