England pioneer Pat Davies remembers career of remarkable firsts

Pat Davies' football career is full of remarkable firsts.
The Netley-born striker was part of the first-ever England women's team in 1972 and scored a hat-trick in the first-ever FA Cup Final.
Davies scored eight goals in eight appearances for England during a remarkable career during which she won six FA Cup titles.
But despite such success, Davies still faced challenges along with moments to savour.
'My debut for Southampton at 12 was very special because it was played in my local village at Royal Victoria Hospital in front of friends and family,' she recalled.
'Scoring a hat-trick in the first-ever FA Cup final at Crystal Palace [was another key memory].
'But I remember very poor pitches, no facilities and just a cold water tap. There were no toilets, we were getting cleaned in duck ponds and whatever we could to just get by.'

Despite the conditions, however, Davies' talent was clear after impressing for Southampton Women F.C., she was soon trialling for the England women's squad.
'After the trials we got a letter in the post. I remember standing in the window waiting for the postman everyday before it dropped on the mat,' she said.
'The four of us from Southampton all got in so it was even more special. We were all part of the first team which was absolutely fantastic. So special.'
With women's football rapidly growing in visibility, the pioneering side they received their England caps in front of a sold-out Wembley in 2022.
This summer, White Stuff are refocusing the limelight on the foremothers of women's football in their latest heartfelt campaign as they celebrate the women who paved the way.
For Davies, it is those memories of wearing the Three Lions on her shirt that remain some of the best.
In fact, 50 years on, the prolific striker can still think of no better feeling than scoring for England.
'It was absolutely fantastic [to play for England]. It was always so special to pull the shirt on and the national anthems always brought a tear to my eye,' she said.
'To actually score a goal was just the best feeling in the world. It couldn't get any better than that. I was over the moon, you just feel like you're on a different planet.'
Davies' contribution in scoring those goals and washing in duck ponds just to play has paved the way for the legends of today to follow in their footsteps.
The importance of her legacy and that of her teammates is abundantly clear, and with the recognition White Stuff and others are giving, the players are beginning to believe that themselves.
'It's nice to receive the recognition of what we did achieve. It makes us feel like what we did, did actually mean something,' she said.
'It makes you feel happy and proud and think, 'yeah, we started it, we were the first.''

Spurs could turn to Eze as Sonny heads into the Los Angeles sunset

It's been an emotional ride for Tottenham fans for the past couple of weeks. Nothing new there then. First there was the joy at signing Mohammed Kudus from arch rivals West Ham with Spurs apparently also adding Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest in a seemingly unprecedented £120million signing spree. Happy days! But no, hold your horses there, cowboy. This is Tottenham we're talking about. The Gibbs-White affair developed into a farce before collapsing and new manager Thomas Frank still looks short of numbers in a squad expected to fight on four fronts this season. The first north London derby to be held out of the United Kingdom soon brought the smiles back on the faces of Spurs fans as they beat Arsenal 1-0 in Hong Kong thanks to a Pape Sarr's wonder goal from the centre circle. It will go down in N17 folklore alongside the last-gasp, long-distance strike from Nayim, which sank the Gunners in the 1995 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Paris, and David Bentley's screamer from way out in the epic 4-4 draw at the Emirates Stadium in October 2008. Best of the lot from Tottenham's perspective was the unbelievable free-kick from Paul Gascoigne which rocketed over the Gunners' defensive wall and beyond David Seaman's despairing dive to set up a 2-1 victory for Terry Venables' side in the 1991 FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. But the high provided by Sarr's strike evaporated just a couple of days later as Son Heung-min announced he is leaving the club after ten glorious years. It was news that all of football expected but he leaves on a high with his legacy set in stone after an incredible career which has yielded 173 goals in 454 games with 101 assists, a Premier League Golden Boot, the Puskas Award for European goal of the year thanks to his incredible solo effort at home to Burnley and, of course, lifting the Europa League trophy following the 1-0 victory against Manchester United in Bilbao. But what's next for the Spurs and South Korea captain? He looks set to move to Los Angeles FC, where he will be reunited with former Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and it is only 1/3 with BetVictor that the 33-year-old dynamo joins a Major League Soccer side. Spurs are now expected to add a marquee player to their attack and although Arsenal are just 4/7 favourites with bet365 to sign Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze it is worth having a dabble at 12/1 with the same firm that Tottenham hijack the move. There's lots to like about Newport County off the pitch, especially their new away kit which pays tribute to Bilbao's Athletic Club and in particular Basque Boys FC, formed from the ranks of 236 children given homes by the wonderful Welsh after escaping bombing by Franco's fascists during the Spanish Civil War. The club, fittingly nicknamed The Exiles, are also supported by terrific indie band The Bug Club but although everything is set up for success off the pitch at Rodney Parade they have struggled on it. More Trending A 1-1 home draw with Notts County on Saturday was a bright start to their new League Two campaign but Newport could slip out of Football League at 15/8 with BetVictor after avoiding relegation by the skin of their teeth last season. Paul Cook, the experienced lower-league coach not the Sex Pistols drummer, has won four promotions as a manager including taking Chesterfield into League Two a couple of seasons ago. The former Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth boss has bought wisely during the summer and the Spireites are 11/2 with William Hill and bet365 to win the title and 6/5 with the former firm and Betfred to gain promotion. Michael Cheek was the top scorer in the division last season with 25 goals as newly promoted Bromley punched above their weight and the Nuneaton-born striker, who turns 24 later this month, is each-way value at 12/1 with Betfred and BetVictor to top the charts again. Elena Rybakina and Marta Kostyuk face each other over the net in an all-Ukraine affair at the Canadian Open in Montreal and the former is 3/1 with Ladbrokes, Coral, SpreadEx and Sporting Index to win after a deciding set on Sunday evening. Wayne Rooney watches on as youngster copies iconic celebration in win over son Kai

Kai Rooney had hopes of lifting a trophy in front of his parents Wayne and Coleen during the Super Cup NI final this weekend but his Manchester United U16 side were beaten by Southampton Wayne Rooney was forced to watch on from the stands as a youngster mimicked his iconic celebration during a win over his son Kai during a youth tournament final. ‌ Teenager Jude Daniels trolled Kai by copying his dad's classic "knockout" celebration as he scored the winner for Southampton's Under-16s against Manchester United in the Super Cup NI final. ‌ The Manchester United legend was watching in the crowd with wife Coleen during the game in Northern Ireland, but they were unable to see their eldest son lift the trophy as Daniels' goal was enough fro the young Saints team to stun United. ‌ Daniels had tapped home from close range to cap off a magnificent team passing move for Southampton and he immediately wheeled away to celebrate. Facing a section of the crowd, Daniels performed Rooney's classic punching celebration, which was followed up by him slowly falling backwards. Luckily his team-mates were there to catch his fall. Rooney famously performed the celebration during Manchester United's win over Tottenham back in 2015 and it is one he has become renowned for. At the time, he had been poking fun at himself after a video went viral of team-mate Phil Bardsley accidentally knocking him out during a sparring match in his kitchen. It was Daniels who stole the limelight on the day, despite United having the high profile players in their team. ‌ Not only did United have the son of legendary ex-striker Rooney in their team, they also had Jacey Carrick, the son of ex-midfielder Michael. It came after Kai himself mimicked a classic football celebration after copying Viktor Gyokeres' mask tribute when he scored earlier in the tournament. ‌ There are high hopes for Kai at United after he followed in his father's footsteps by signing for the club as an 11-year-old in 2020 - though he has a long way to go in emulating Rooney Sr, who netted a stunning 253 goals from 559 appearances. Just one year after signing for the club, Kai penned an agreement with sports manufacturer Puma.

Chelsea agree £20m transfer deal to sell forgotten striker

Burnley have agreed a transfer deal with Chelsea to sign Armando Broja, according to reports. Chelsea have set out their stall in the summer transfer market in a bid to close the gap on their Premier League rivals, with Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro all joining to help bolster Enzo Maresca's attack. The Blues are also working on a £60million transfer for RB Leipzig and Netherlands winger Xavi Simons, who is said to be eager to push through a transfer to Stamford Bridge. Joao Felix and Noni Madueke have both moved in the opposite direction, joining Al-Nassr and Arsenal respectively, and Broja is now expected to follow suit as he looks to secure regular playing time away from west London. Broja, 23, struggled to make a significant impact across an injury-hit loan spell with Everton last season, failing to find the net in any of his 11 appearances for the Merseyside outfit in all competitions. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. But Broja's disappointing campaign at Goodison Park has not put newly promoted Burnley off a potential deal for the striker and talks have been advancing at a pace in recent days. According to The Sun, the Clarets have reached an agreement worth up to £20million for the Albania international, who has been on Chelsea's books since Under-8 level. Given Broja is a product of Chelsea's academy, the proposed sale would represent 'pure profit' as the west London giants look to balance the books to comply with PSR rules. Broja would become the second homegrown Chelsea player to leave for Turf Moor this summer, with Bashir Humphreys completing a £12m switch in May following an initial loan move. More Trending The report claims Broja is 'open' to the prospect of joining Burnley, but the forward is still yet to agree personal terms with Scott Parker's side. Broja would become Burnley's 11th signing of the summer, with the club investing heavily in recruitment to give themselves the best possible chance of survival on their return to Premier League football. The forward, who has also enjoyed loan spells with Vitesse, Southampton and Fulham, has three years remaining on his current contract at Stamford Bridge. A cameo appearance in Chelsea's FA Cup fourth-round tie with Aston Villa back in January 2024 was the last time Broja featured in a competitive match for his boyhood team.
