A man who beat his former partner with a hoover pole has been given a two-year sentence.
The Central Criminal Court heard that the woman was left with extensive bruising and cuts to her face, neck, arm, hands, shoulder and legs. She suffered carpet burns from being dragged across the sitting room floor

The 45-year-old accused man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to assault of the woman causing her harm and production of a hoover pole at his home, in February 2022.
The accused man had been on trial twice on a further allegation of anal rape of the woman on the same occasion but the jury disagreed in both trials. He had pleaded not guilty to this offence.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has entered a nolle prosequi in relation to the rape charge, meaning the charge has been dropped.
The man has a previous conviction for assault which occurred after the woman made the rape allegation against him. He served a four-month sentence for this offence.

The woman did not wish to make a victim impact statement to the court.
Passing sentence on Monday, Mr Justice Patrick McGrath said the woman had suffered a considerable number of injuries and the court must take the level of violence involved very seriously.
He set a headline sentence of three years to reflect the offending.
The judge noted in mitigation the early guilty plea and the man's expressions of remorse. He noted there was a subsequent assault for which the defendant has already served a sentence.

Mr Justice McGrath sentenced the accused man to two years' imprisonment which he backdated to reflect the time he has already spent in custody.
An investigating garda told Garrett McCormack BL, prosecuting, that the woman reported to gardaí that she had been assaulted by the man. She told gardaí that there had been a verbal argument in respect of alleged cheating and he became aggressive and threw her to the ground.
He assaulted her with the pipe of a hoover, striking her several times, and broke a glass panel in the kitchen door. The assault continued into the sitting room where she was punched and struck and hit again with the hoover pipe.
The accused was arrested, denied the rape allegation and gave a 'mixed' version of events to gardaí.

The court heard a decision was later made to charge him with anal rape and the second assault, for which he has already served a sentence, occurred in an effort to get her to withdraw her statement.
Joanne Williams BL, defending, said the couple had ben in an 'on-off' relationship at the time and living separately. She said both parties were abusing substances of one kind or another.
She said the accused has a good work history prior to going into custody after giving up his bail voluntarily. She handed in character references on the accused man's behalf.
She asked the court to take into account his early guilty plea in relation to the assault and had expressed remorse in relation to the assault to the injured party during the first trail. She said he has asked her to re-iterate this and apologise to the woman.
She said he has recognised that alcohol is at the root of his offending and wants to engage with AA.

World champion sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson arrested for allegedly assaulting boyfriend at Washington airport

Reigning 100m world champion Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend at an airport in Washington. The American sprinter, 25, was arrested last Sunday on a fourth-degree domestic violence offence, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press. That was four days before she ran in the opening round of the women's 100m event at the USA Track & Field (USATF) Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The police report said an officer at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was notified by a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) supervisor of a disturbance between Richardson and her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman. It said the officer reviewed camera footage and observed Richardson reach out with her left arm and grab Coleman's backpack and yank it away. Richardson then appeared to get in Coleman's way with Coleman trying to step around her, the report said, adding that Coleman was shoved into a wall. The report later said Richardson appeared to throw an item at Coleman, which the TSA indicated may have been headphones. In the police report, the officer said: "I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim." Richardson was booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, at 6.54pm last Sunday and released on Monday at 1.13pm. "USATF is aware of the reports and is not commenting on this matter," the sport's national governing body said in a statement. Richardson has an automatic bye to the world championships in September in Tokyo as the defending champion.

This actor had his rape re-enactment scenes cut by 60 Minutes bosses after he was found to have done the unthinkable. Now he's in a desperate fight to clear his name

An actor whose portrayal of a knife-wielding rapist in a 60 Minutes re-enactment was cut from the program after he was found guilty of domestic violence is headed back to court. Joel Aaron Baker recently boasted on social media about his role on Nine's flagship current affairs program, which aired ten days after he was convicted and placed on a conditional release order. The June 8 edition of 60 Minutes featured a report by Tara Brown about Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearance in Portugal of British toddler Madeleine McCann. Brown had interviewed Irishwoman Hazel Behan, who claimed she was raped by Brueckner in 2004, and the program featured a re-enactment of that alleged attack. Baker portrayed a balaclava-clad Brueckner, dressed all in black and carrying a hunting knife, as he tormented a terrified Ms Behan. What 60 Minutes viewers did not know was that on May 29 he had faced a magistrate at Sutherland Local Court. On that day Baker was cleared of assaulting his wife but convicted of another domestic violence-related offence - destroying or damaging property. The destroy or damage property charge stemmed from an incident which occurred at the former couple's marital home last year. Baker was placed on a 12-month conditional release order and made the subject of a two-year apprehended violence order protecting his wife, and is prohibited from going within 50m of her home or workplace. The 36-year-old, from Sylvania Waters in Sydney's south, has now lodged an appeal against that conviction and finding of guilt in the NSW District Court. Baker split from his wife in October last year and is only allowed to contact her through a lawyer. As part of his conditional release order, Baker must comply with a treatment plan and take part in a domestic violence program under the supervision of a community corrections officer. Two months earlier, Baker had seven other domestic violence-related common assault charges dismissed after being found not guilty, also at Sutherland Local Court. A day after the 60 Minutes episode was aired, Baker posted on Facebook and Instagram about his latest acting experience. 'A small acting job I got to do for a re-enactment on last night's episode of 60 Minutes on Channel 9,' he wrote. 'Warning: It's not a nice topic related to the Madeline McCann case, but you can see the full story on @9now.' Baker (far left) appeared as an Australian prisoner of the Japanese in four episodes of the critically acclaimed World War II television miniseries The Narrow Road to the Deep North Promoting himself for playing a man perpetrating violence against a woman so soon after his conviction has appalled Baker's wife's family. 'What has caused our family even more distress is Joel's immediate public sharing of the 60 Minutes segment via his social media, seemingly celebrating his appearance despite the deeply concerning nature of his personal conduct,' one relative said. After the Daily Mail alerted Nine to Baker's criminal history a spokesman said the network had not known about Baker's criminal conviction and the June 8 episode would be edited. 'Actors sourced for re-enactments are provided through a talent agency,' he said. 'We were not made aware of these claims and we are now in the process of removing the footage from the story on online episodes.' Baker describes himself as an actor, model, DJ and 'digital creator', but until three years ago he was the manager of a McDonald's outlet. A post on Baker's Instagram account about his 60 Minutes appearance featured footage of his performance. One of his followers responded to that harrowing clip with the remark, 'The old smash and dash', to which Baker replied: 'F*** yet you wouldn't let me the other day'. Baker appeared as an Australian prisoner of the Japanese in four episodes of the recent critically acclaimed World War II television miniseries The Narrow Road to the Deep North. He has also been seen as one of the notorious 'River Boys' being arrested on Home and Away, as well as in NCIS: Sydney, Strife and Last King of the Cross. Baker's appeal is listed for hearing at Downing Centre District Court on October 2.

Deaths of slain mother and children an ‘unspeakable loss', funeral hears

A mother and her two children allegedly murdered in Co Fermanagh are now "together and finally safe", mourners at their funeral have heard. Crowds gathered in the Co Clare village of Barefield on Saturday to pay their respects to Vanessa Whyte, 45, and her children, James Rutledge, 14, and Sara Rutledge, 13. The trio were shot dead at their home in Maguiresbridge in July. Ian Rutledge, 43, died in hospital following the shooting. It is understood the agricultural contractor is the only suspect in the shooting of his family. As requested by the family, many mourners wore bright colours and GAA jerseys, lining the main street to watch the three hearses pass. Among those attending the service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception were a representative for Taoiseach Micheál Martin and GAA president Jarlath Burns. Delivering the eulogy, Ms Whyte's sister Regina said the family had been robbed of their loved ones. 'Vanessa, James and Sara were taken from this world in a cruel and vicious manner – there are no words available to express how this has impacted our family and their friends,' she said. 'We as a family have been robbed of both a relationship with our sister and a chance to see James and Sara grow up, and they have been robbed of the remainder of their lives. 'It has taken us 11 days to be in a position to have Vanessa, James and Sara back to Clare. 'This was supposed to be a joyous occasion where Vanessa would see her new nephew, and Sara and James would meet their baby cousin for the first time. Instead we are in the position of choosing coffins, final burial places and funeral hymns. 'For us as a family, the only comfort we have is that Vanessa, James and Sara are together and finally safe. 'Vanessa will have her children at either side of her forever, as they were when they were alive.' She described her sister as 'witty, bright, kind and determined', and said James and Sara were the 'focus of her world'. She recalled James's love of the GAA, playing both hurling and football, and also cricket, adding he had been acknowledged as the 'kind, bright, determined teenager we as a family know so well'. 'James's smile was infectious, and his loyalty was strong,' she said. Sara was remembered as having a deep love for animals, and aspiring to follow in her mother's footsteps to become a vet, as well as loving sport. 'She was an excellent hurler, a footballer and skilled at netball. She was a team player, a quiet leader, and like every sister, never let James away with anything,' she said. 'Amazing Grace' and 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' were among the songs played during the service. Bishop Ger Nash, Bishop of Ferns and a family friend, described heartbreak over the 'tragic and unspeakable loss of three lives with so much to give to the world'. 'The tragic events of last week, and the ripping away of three people from their family and friends leave us searching for answers and coming back again and again to the only answer that is completely true: 'We don't know',' he said. Crowds also turned out for Ms Whyte, James and Sara for a service of removal in Maguiresbridge on Wednesday. Ms Whyte, James and Sara are to be buried together in Templemaley Cemetery.
