Oleksandr Usyk knows who will succeed him as heavyweight champion

Daily Mirror09-07-2025
The undefeated Ukrainian is in the twilight stages of hid career - but has already predicted the next undisputed heavyweight champion that will dominate the sport
Oleksandr Usyk has backed rising star Moses Itauma to become the next undisputed heavyweight champion.
Usyk - a two-division undisputed champion - is set to return to the ring on July 19 against Daniel Dubois in what promises to be a mouthwatering rematch at Wembley Stadium in London. The pair first met back in 2023 - with the Ukrainian going on to stop 'Triple D' in the ninth round.

However, the fight was not without controversy. In the fifth round of their heavyweight dust-up, Usyk was sent crashing to the canvas with a body shot. That said, it was later deemed a low blow - much to the frustration of the Brit and his team.

Earlier this year, Usyk confirmed that he will fight two more times before calling it a day once and for all. As the Ukrainian approaches the end of his career, many fans are wondering who will be the next superstar to conquer boxing heaviest weight class.

In an interview with talkSPORT, when asked who will succeed him as the next undisputed heavyweight champion, Usyk replied: "Moses Itauma, I think is a great fighter. Young. 20 years old. I think Itauma has a big future." Itauma, 20, remains unbeaten as a professional - with 10 of his 12 wins coming by way of knockout.
The young Brit recently scored an impressive knockout victory over Mike Balogun in his last outing back in May and has been backed to become a huge star in the sport. Itauma faces a tough test in his next fight as he is scheduled to go head-to-head with fellow Briton Dillian Whyte in Saudi Arabia on August 16.

Two-time heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is familiar with Itauma's power and ability, having sparred with him while preparing for his first meeting with Usyk in May 2024. Regarding the 20-year-old's talents, the 'Gypsy King' said: "One thing I will say about Moses, he's a good fighter, he's a good boxer. He's like a sponge, you tell him something and he absorbs it, he listens. He's only 20 years old. "I told him years ago, 'Don't worry about breaking records, you've only got one career, take your time and enjoy it.' Because I remember when I was 19 or 20 and now I'm 36 and it's gone.'
However, Fury warns that Itauma's upcoming clash with Whyte could be a step too early if he overlooks his British rival. 'It's a big step-up for Moses because he hasn't really fought anyone on Dillian's level, though the old Dillian was a couple of years ago," said Fury. 'It's gonna be interesting to see how much Whyte has left. Could this be similar to what Martin Bakole did to Jared Anderson? Maybe it's too early, maybe he passes with flying colours. And that's why you've got to watch it and find out."
When is Oleksansdr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois?
Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois will go head-to-head on July 19 at Wembley Stadium, London. 'Triple D' is out for revenge after tasting defeat in their initial encounter nearly two years ago. Despite Dubois being denied a knockdown, the Brit will be itching to become the first man to defeat the Ukrainian.
The whole card is set to be shown live on DAZN PPV - with the first fight roughly getting underway at around 5.40pm BST (12.40pm ET / 9.40am PT). Also on the card, Lawrence Okolie will be looking to further climb up the heavyweight ranks when he defends his WBC silver heavyweight title against former world champion Kevin Lerena. Also featuring on the card, Britain's Lewis Edmondson has a chance of intercontinental honours as he fights Daniel Lapin.

LIANNE SANDERSON: 'Vile abuse of Jess Carter no surprise after calls when I'm on radio'

As England star Jess Carter reveals the racist abuse she is receiving, broadcaster Lianne Sanderson, a former professional footballer who won 50 caps for England and was part of the England squad at the 2007 Women's World Cup, and Euros 2009, says she knows what she is going through Racism is something I live with every day. I didn't as a player because there wasn't social media, but I do now as a commentator. ‌ Every time I go on TV I deliberately don't check my phone afterwards, because I know the racism emojis and comments will be there. ‌ There are times I'll be on air at TalkSport and people will phone in. There is a pre-call before they are put through to me, and I see the light go red and it says 'racism'. ‌ Obviously they get them off before they get through to me. It doesn't make me feel good, but I've become desensitised to it. But someone like Jess Carter, right now preparing for the semi-final, she's not going to be in a good moment. She knows she's not having her best tournament, and on top of that she's getting racist abuse. ‌ I feel for her, and all the players that this happens to. I stand with her, because I know how lonely she will be feeling. You can criticise someone's performance, I don't mind that. Everyone has an opinion. But no-one should be racially abused, regardless of how badly they played, regardless of if they've done something in a game that isn't acceptable, that's not OK. To subject someone to racism, homophobia, sexism, is just outright wrong. ‌ A lot of players have started coming off social media in recent years because of the abuse they're getting. But we're all creatures of habit, every football checkers their phone after matches, because you want people's validation, you want to know if you had a good game or not. Unfortunately it only really seems to hit home to people when you share what people actually say. Because I get it every single day, whether it be monkey emojis, someone being horrible about my sexuality, something about my weight. It doesn't make me feel good. I've had two death threats. ‌ But they're not going to stop me, they're not going to shut me up and I'm not going anywhere. You have to develop thick skin though. There have been times when it's left me in tears. You're not going to stamp out racism completely, racist people are always going to exist in the world. But there a lot of token gestures, anti-racism campaigns that don't have any backbone. Personally I see the same people 20 years later in the same room, sitting in the same seat, and nothing has changed. Those people are part of the problem as well. ‌ They need to get serious about bringing change, and really stamping out racism and other forms of prejudice from football, with real action and putting people those positions who have walked a day in the life of. The social media companies aren't doing enough. If I put a song up they'll take it down for copyright. If someone posts something racist to me, they'll say it's within the guidelines. ‌ Some of the things you couldn't get more offensive if you tried, but there's always a generic response, almost like a robot. And nothing changes. So there's so much more that needs to be done. Racism is still a daily reality. There are still homophobic chants being sang in the stands. We haven't come very far. It's the reality of the world right now unfortunately. If I were Jess Carter right now, or any player in the tournament experiencing abuse, I would come off social media right now. People might say, well if you do that then the racists are winning. But if you're in tears at night and if it's affecting your mental health, it's not about who's winning and who's losing. It's about protecting your energy and your mental health, and not letting the racists beat you.

Tearful Red Bull F1 staff ordered to ‘smile more' after being rocked by Christian Horner axe

TEARFUL staff rocked by Red Bull chief Christian Horner's axing have been ordered to 'smile more' by their new Austrian and German bosses. Loyal workers were stunned when the British Formula One team's supremo Horner, 51, was ousted following a stellar 20-year reign. 3 Red Bull staff have been told to 'smile more' despite being upset over Christian Horner's exit Credit: AFP 3 The ace was brutally fired earlier this month in a surprise meeting Credit: AP He helped Red Bull win eight drivers' championships and six constructors' crowns. And sources told SunSport new Austrian boss Helmut Marko upset staff who gathered to meet him at the team's HQ in Milton Keynes — with some now threatening to quit. A female Red Bull worker revealed: 'It was only a day after Christian was sacked and a lot of the team were still upset when Mr Marko addressed us. 'But he just made a joke of it and told us to cheer up — he said, 'You need to smile more'. Horner's roles as chief executive officer and team principal have been usurped by Austrian team adviser Marko, 82, and German ex-football official Oliver Mintzlaff, 49. While French engineer and motorsport exec Laurent Mekies, 48, was quickly unveiled as Horner's replacement last week. But insiders have insisted Mintzlaff and Marko are now the men in the driving seat — and revealed their first address to staff at Milton Keynes was a 'car crash'. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS Mintzlaff sparked more anger when he joked about the brutal axing of senior staff including Horner, chief marketing officer Oliver Hughes and director of communications Paul Smith. Horner was summoned to London on July 9 believing he was attending a regular team meeting. Christian Horner SACKED by Red Bull F1! Shock Departure After 20 Years But he was then relieved of his duties on the spot and put on gardening leave. Hughes and Smith were called into an office and also told they were no longer part of Red Bull's future. They were escorted out of the building after having their company devices taken from them — leaving hundreds of staff with no bosses to answer to. And another staff member told SunSport: 'Mintzlaff also said, 'If you have any problems, just text your line manager'. 'Then he added, 'Oh, and if you don't have a line manager any more, just text me!' and started laughing.' Red Bull supremo Horner knew nothing of the plans to get rid of him, 18 months after he was accused of a sexting scandal which broke the heart of his Spice Girl wife Geri, 52. And the £12million-a-year chief was replaced within 24 hours by Marko and Mintzlaff, who arrived to address staff members, 90 per cent of whom are British. Emotional Red Bull insiders spoke in depth for the first time yesterday over their shock at the loss of their boss. They also laid bare the chaos that is now gripping this once all-conquering F1 team. 3 And long-standing family friends who have spoken to Horner admitted he was left stunned by his ruthless removal. One told SunSport: 'Christian told me how hurt and betrayed he felt after all that he and Geri and their family have been through over the past 18 months. 'He was cleared twice over the texting scandal but is now on gardening leave and has still been given no explanation why he's lost the job he loved. 'Red Bull's Austrian bosses have always resented the fact that so much of their F1 success was down to a team that Christian built in Britain. 'That is what lies behind this — as well as the hangover from the terrible headlines last year. 'Christian was called to a London meeting and had no idea what it was about. 'He was just told, 'You have to be there' and was dumbfounded when he was ushered into a room and effectively sacked on the spot. 'It left him totally blindsided — he thought he'd been called in to speak about another issue. 'But the staff are nearly all Brits and are fiercely loyal to him and are now talking about walking out. 'It was a targeted attack for control of the race team because Red Bull's Austrian HQ didn't like a British man running their race team. 'But now the team is in chaos — Red Bull at Milton Keynes has hit the skids.' Red Bull's Austrian-based HQ was approached for comment yesterday.

England stars taken off pitch due to LIGHTNING strikes as match delayed by an hour

England completed their tour of the Americas by beating the USA 40-5 in Washington DC, but Steve Borthwick's players had to contend with a 40-minute delay during the first half England's rugby union stars were forced off the pitch during their clash with the USA because of lightning strikes. Steve Borthwick's side, missing key players amid the ongoing British & Irish Lions series, were continuing their tour of the Americas after two impressive wins over Argentina. ‌ Saturday marked England's first match in the USA since 2001. The fixture took place at Audi Field in Washington DC and kick-off had already been pushed back due to adverse weather conditions. ‌ Then in the first half, with England 14-0 up, lightning caused another delay lasting 40 minutes. England Rugby posted on social media: "Due to lightning strikes in the vicinity of Audi Field in Washington DC, players have been removed from the field of play." ‌ Lengthy delays were recently seen at football's Club World Cup in the USA. Chelsea and Benfica were forced to wait inside the changing rooms for nearly two hours during their match which was the sixth to be delayed due to weather conditions at the tournament. England eventually cruised to a 40-5 win, with captain George Ford making four conversions. Ford, 32, admitted that the conditions were challenging but was proud of his team-mates' efforts. "The conditions were difficult but it was a good group effort and a huge experience for the new players," the England skipper commented. ‌ Boss Borthwick handed debuts to Gabriel Oghre, Max Ojomoh, Joe Carpenter, Arthur Clark, Charlie Atkinson and Oscar Beard. The 45-year-old was full of praise for the youngsters in the circumstances. "They were challenging conditions, and with the weather break the game has lasted a long time," Borthwick said. "It's a scenario none of us have faced before - to deal with those conditions, with six new caps in the team today, was magnificent. "There are things you want to do better, yes, but I thought they were brilliant. I'm pleased with the way the players have approached all the games - all three were very different, and it's been a great experience in so many ways. ‌ Will the weather conditions negatively affect the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Have your say in the comments section. "We've had 10 new caps over three Tests and got depth developing - we can all see the physical nature of the team, which is athletic, quick, fit and the way the England team's moving." ‌ The ex-second row played last time England faced the USA across the pond. Sir Clive Woodward's team beat the hosts 48-19 in San Francisco - but Saturday was a very difference experience. "My memories were we were getting changed in the swimming pool changing room, so a leisure complex!" Borthwick laughed. "Playing here in such a unique, brilliant stadium. It's very different, which is terrific to see." England are on a run of seven successive victories, their longest winning streak since 2020 and a sign that confidence is growing after a difficult period last year. They'll take on Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Argentina at Twickenham when the autumn internationals come around.
