2 Top Tech Stocks to Buy Before they Soar in the Second Half

Yahoo2 days ago
Wall Street shook off the wave of trade war and tariff updates and pushed the Nasdaq to new all-time highs on Wednesday.
The upbeat day might signal that investors are learning lessons from the initial trade war fears, betting that Trump and his administration likely do not want to crush the U.S. economy or the stock market.
Investors could still take profits on high-flying tech stocks heading into Q2 earnings season.
Thankfully, the bulls should remain in charge as long as AI and tech-boosted earnings growth holds up. Plus, the Fed is still projected to cut interest rates again in 2025.
Now might be a good time for investors to start buying tech stocks that are trading well below their all-time highs before they possibly surge in July and beyond.
Lumentum LITE designs and manufactures optical and photonic technologies for high-speed telecommunications, data centers, and advanced manufacturing. LITE provides components, such as transceivers and lasers for fiber-optic networks, supporting the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, 5G connectivity, and beyond.
Its industrial lasers are used in precision manufacturing, such as cutting semiconductors and solar cells. Lumentum also develops 3D sensing laser diodes for applications like facial recognition in smartphones and autonomous vehicle sensors. Despite this backdrop, Lumentum stock only climbed 10% in the past five years while the Tech sector soared 110%.

Lumentum's revenue growth plateaued after 2019, driven by multiple headwinds. LITE announced in May 2019 that it had discontinued all shipments to Huawei after the U.S. government forced tech companies to stop supplying the Chinese smartphone maker due to national security concerns.
Wall Street also grew worried about Lumentum's overreliance on Apple for its growth in a slowing iPhone market. On top of that, Covid-based inventory corrections, macroeconomic pressures such as inflation, and trade restrictions dragged LITE down over the past several years.
Thankfully for investors, Lumentum is turning the corner, boosted by surging AI demand. Lumentum crushed our EPS estimate by an average of 42% in the trailing four quarters, including a big beat-and-raise Q3 FY25 in early May. Its upbeat earnings revisions land LITE a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Lumentum's next-generation optics are helping create energy-efficient AI networks, which is critical in the power-hungry AI space. New CEO Michael Hurlston, who took over in February, said LITE's innovations are 'driving transformative power efficiencies across cloud, AI, and long-haul networks, making us an essential partner in this next era of connectivity.'
LITE is projected to grow its revenue by 20% in FY25 and 33% next year to surge from $1.36 billion in FY24 to $2.17 billion in FY26, crushing its previous peaks. Better yet, the tech innovator is projected to double its adjusted EPS in FY25 (+95%) and FY26 (+111%) to reach $4.16 a share. Some of Lumentum's growth is driven by its late-2023 acquisition of Cloud Light Technology.

Lumentum shares have kept pace with Tech over the past decade despite its huge underperformance over the last five years. The stock is neck and neck with Tech in 2025 and up 60% in the past year to crush its sector's 8% run. LITE completed a long-term golden cross, where its 50-week moving average overtook its 200-week, in May.
A strong earnings report could help it finally break out above its 2021 peaks after several failed attempts. Lumentum stock also trades at a 40% discount to Tech on the price/earnings to growth ratio front.
Customer relationship management standout HubSpot HUBS posted blockbuster growth over the last decade as companies big and small race to digitalize every pocket of their businesses. HUBS stock has roughly tripled the Tech sector during that stretch, fueled by massive growth that took it from $182 million in 2015 revenue to $2.6 billion last year.
Despite outrunning Tech in the last three and five-year stretches, HUBS trades 30% below its highs even as the Tech sector ripped to fresh records to close the first half. HubSpot stock cooled on the back of slowing sales growth compared to its days of 30% to 50% expansion and its inability to consistently post profits.
Yet, HubSpot could be ready to break out and return to all-time highs given its robust adjusted earnings and revenue growth outlook.

HubSpot's solutions are designed to help its clients attract customers, build relationships, and keep them happy. The business software company launched its Breeze artificial intelligence platform last year, integrating HubSpot's AI tools throughout its entire CRM platform.
Its AI-powered customer platform helps businesses grow by managing marketing, sales, customer service, content, operations, and beyond more efficiently than ever before.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company is projected to expand its revenue by roughly 16% in 2025 and 2026 to reach $3.51 billion, adding nearly $1 billion to its top line vs. 2024. It is expected to grow its adjusted earnings by 15% and 21%, respectively. HUBS has beaten our quarterly earnings estimates for five years in a row, and its recent upward earnings revisions earn it a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
HubSpot trades 30% below its 2021 highs after getting firmly rejected at those levels in February. HUBS stock is trading right near its 21-day moving average, and it's held its ground at or near its long-term 200-week moving average several times in the past year.
The 200-week moving average was one of Warren Buffett's longtime right-hand man, Charlie Munger's, favorite technical indicators for buying long-term stocks.

It might be worth taking a chance on HubSpot for near-term upside to its peaks and long-term AI-boosted growth. Plus, the company's robust balance sheet is helping it buy back stock. Wall Street is also still very high on the stock, with 26 of the 33 brokerage recommendations Zacks has at 'Strong Buys.'

Trump's 30% tariff letter leaves EU scrambling to bring U.S. on side

The European Union has been left scrambling after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would slap a 30% tariff on goods imported from the bloc beginning Aug. 1. European leaders were quick to respond, saying they would still work to strike an agreement with the U.S. before the start of August. The EU also further delayed countermeasures which were set to come into effect this week and warned that preparations for additional retaliatory moves were underway. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on Monday told reporters that the letter had been received with "regret and disappointment ... especially considering the advanced stage of our ongoing negotiations." Sefcovic stressed that the EU was still focused on finding a negotiated solution, but was preparing for all possible outcomes — which could include countermeasures. He also said that he would speak to his U.S. counterparts later in the day. "I cannot imagine walking away without genuine effort," the trade commissioner said. With less than a month before Trump's new deadline, the European Union will have to act fast to prevent the tariffs from coming into effect or risk further escalation. While EU leaders remain determined to strike a deal, economists and analysts warned that the threat of a 30% tariff rate has nevertheless added fresh pressure to the 27-member block. "It's very bad news for Europe," Alicia Garcia-Herrero, senior fellow at Bruegel and chief economist for Asia Pacific at Natixis, told CNBC's "Europe Early Edition" on Monday. "Trump is pushing the commission to really come up with a better deal," she added. Carsten Brzeski, global head of macro at ING, and Inga Fechner, a senior economist at ING who focuses on global trade, struck a similar tone. "Trump's letter to the EU is not a love letter but also not a hate letter. It's a letter to increase pressure in the ongoing negotiations," they said in a note on Sunday. The EU however still has options, the economists said, suggesting that one approach could be for the EU to offer to boost its purchasing of U.S. products ranging from soybeans to military equipment. Brussels could also reduce existing tariffs and other trade hurdles on items such as U.S. cars, or introduce export bans on products that are important to the U.S. such as European-made pharmaceuticals, Brzeski and Fechner said. "The fourth and final option would be to go into outright retaliation with either increasing tariffs on US goods or the nuclear option in trade: tariffs on digital services but also tighter regulations on US tech firms," the economists suggested, noting, however that this would likely trigger a full blown trade war. Despite the additional pressure for the EU, the expectation remains that the bloc and Washington D.C. will strike a agreement in the coming weeks. "I think both sides will strike a compromise. This is in the best interest of both the U.S. and the European Union," said Joerg Kraemer, chief economist at Commerzbank. "I expect in the end, a kind of average tariff rate for the European Union for exports to the U.S. in the area of 15%," he told CNBC'S "Europe Early Edition" on Monday. Notably, this rate would be higher than the 10% that had previously been anticipated by many and is in line with the deal that has been agreed upon by the U.K. and U.S. Berenberg Economist Salomon Fiedler meanwhile appeared more optimistic, saying in a note that the bank was still expecting 10% duties even as "the risks are now strongly skewed towards higher rates." One reason for optimism is that Trump has repeatedly taken extreme positions initially, and then later compromised, Fiedler argued. "The fact that Trump only threatened the new 30% rate for 1 August, instead of implementing it more quickly, suggests he is still looking to negotiate," he said. Trump may also shy away from further tariffs as businesses start passing on higher import costs to consumers, Fiedler suggested. The domestic political backdrop may also change, which could make it less important for the U.S. president to try and keep public attention on trade, he added. On the flipside, risk factors for higher levies include the unlikelihood that the U.S.' trade deficits — which Trump has often used as an argument for tariffs — will disappear, and the U.S. administration's reliance on tariff incomes to supplement its budget, according to Fiedler. "The always remote hope of a good negotiation outcome — the bilateral removal of all tariffs and some other trade barriers between the EU and the US — has all but disappeared from view by now," he noted.

Kenvue CEO Mongon stepping down as company continues with strategic review

Kenvue says that Thibaut Mongon is stepping down as its CEO as the maker of Listerine and Band-Aid brands continues with a strategic review of the company. Kenvue used to be a part of Johnson & Johnson. J&J announced in late 2021 that it was splitting its consumer health division from the pharmaceutical and medical device divisions in a bid to make each more nimble. Kenvue said Monday that board member Kirk Perry will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately. Perry has served as a director since December and most recently served as CEO of Circana, a provider of market research. He spent more than 20 years at Procter & Gamble in various roles. Kenvue also said that it is continuing to work with its strategic review committee to explore options for the company. 'The Board's strategic review is underway, and we are considering a broad range of potential alternatives, including ways to simplify the Company's portfolio and how it operates,' Chair Larry Merlo said in a statement. Kenvue provided some preliminary results for its fiscal second quarter. The company anticipates adjusted earnings in a range of 28 cents to 29 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet expect earnings of 28 cents per share. Kenvue will report its full quarterly results on Aug. 7 and said that it will revise its full-year outlook on that date. Shares rose more than 4% before the market open.

Small-Cap Russell 2000 Leads Another Up-Day in the Market

Thursday, July 10, 2025Markets kept moving higher this Thursday, with the small-cap Russell 2000 leading the major indexes for the 4th session in the last 5. The Dow also performed fairly well today: +192 points, +0.43%, while the S&P 500 was up +17 points or +0.27% and the Nasdaq +19 points, +0.09%. The Russell gained +10 points for the session +0.48%.The Russell 2000 has been playing catch-up of late, as large-cap AI/tech stocks listed on the Nasdaq and S&P 500 have led the market for nearly all of this year so far. But in the past month, the Russell is +5%, while the other major indexes hover around +4%. It's still off all-time highs reached 3 1/3 years ago, but the small-caps have outgained the field of the past month or much reining in animal spirits in the market these days, we continually see higher and higher markets. This is even with a trade deadline having come and gone and precious few trade deals with any U.S. trading partners helping light the way forward. We seem to be both having our cake and eating it too these days. Iconic American apparel company Levi Strauss & Co. LEVI reported earnings for its fiscal Q2 after today's close, and were ahead of the Zacks consensus estimates: earnings of 22 cents per share outshone the 14 cents estimated by analysts, while $1.4 billion in revenues surpassed the $1.37 billion we had been projecting. (You can see the full Zacks Earnings Calendar here.)Gross margins for LEVI hit a record +62.6% for the quarter, with comps for the Americas up +5%, net revenues in Europe +14%, and Asia flat. Direct-to-Consumer was +11% in the quarter. All in all, a good quarter — one that justifies its current jump +7% in late trading on the news. The stock is up an additional +14% year to date. There will be no economic reports Friday, and no earnings reports worth writing home about tomorrow either. We look ahead to next Tuesday, when not only Consumer Price Index (CPI) data will be out, but also Q2 earnings reports from some of the biggest Wall Street banks such as JPMorgan JPM, Citigroup C and Wells Fargo banks are expected to perform well, as assets under management are at record highs, while investment banking has performed well across the board with markets at or near all-time highs. The three major banks reporting Tuesday all are currently at Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Meanwhile, the CPI Inflation Rate from last month's report was at a 12-month low +2.3%, +2.8% on core. These are about as close to what we've seen to the Fed's optimal inflation target of +2.0%.Questions or comments about this article and/or author?
