Nine to ten: Funun Arts Group nears a milestone at World Art Dubai fair
Shiba Khan and Farah Khan, also known as the Khan Sisters in the art fraternity, say that 'what began as a passion project to unite artists and give them a voice, has blossomed into a global creative movement.' 'In our very first year,' says Shiba Khan, who is also an artist, 'we didn't know what to look forward to. We only had a vision – to bring people together through art and create a platform where voices, especially of women, youth and emerging artists, could be seen and heard.'
A composition by Dr. Hafsa.
Nine years later, the vision has realised itself into one of the UAE's most active and impactful art bodies, hailed not only for its consistent presence in all major art events, but also for the innovative experiences and meaningful conversations it brings to them, particularly to World Art Dubai, every year. This year's presentation by the Group was a visual journey and emotional treat across continents and cultures. Funun's stands offered visitors a rich palette of styles and techniques, from traditional techniques to experimental projects.
Included was Abstract Expressionism and Realism (side by side), reflecting both the inner psyche and the outer world; charcoal sketches showing depth and maturity; mixed media and fluid art, spontaneous with movement; paper quilling and glass art done with detail and precision and displays such as paintings on copper trays, leatherwork on canvas, and art-infused carpets, bridging fine art and artisanal craft. Every artwork, speaking softly or boldly, told a story – of its origins, identity, resilience, enthusiasm, and imagination. Artists from India, Pakistan, Syria, Iran, Lebanon, the UK, Philippines, Italy, and many more countries, had travelled to Dubai to be a part of the showcase.

'We were proud to represent a truly global family of artists,' says Farah Khan. 'Each artist brought not just their art, but their soul, their heritage, and a message that connects with someone out there.' Funun Arts Group has a commitment to innovation in presentation. One of the most talked about performances was 'Rhythmic Painting' in 2022, a fusion of movement and brushwork.
Shiba Khan painted live to the rhythms of a classical Indian dancer; it was a moving canvas that came to life with each gesture and brushstroke. It was also a powerful reminder of how visual and performing arts can merge into a single artistic event, erasing boundaries between different forms of art. Other creative highlights offered by the Group have included 'Circle of Life', a collaborative installation symbolising unity, environmental consciousness and the infinite cycle of creativity; and 'Sustainable Fashion Show', where artists turned recycled materials into fashion statements, advocating for eco-consciousness through wearable art.
Parvin's powerful painting of a horse.
These features, besides giving food for thought and entertaining the audience, also served a greater purpose — connecting art to sustainability, inclusivity and innovation, which are themes that resonate deeply in today's world. This year's World Art Dubai also saw the inclusion of young artists from the Annual Student Art Show (ASAS), the flagship educational initiative of Funun Arts Group. Eighteen student winners, selected from hundreds of submissions, were given the opportunity to exhibit their works at World Art Dubai, alongside the creations of seasoned artists.
Student artworks explored the theme 'Art and Innovation', blending traditional ideas with futuristic concepts. From AI-inspired pieces to climate-change reflections, the expressions were instinctive, powerful, and quite insightful. 'This was more than a reward: it was a life-changing moment,' says Shiba Khan. 'Seeing their eyes light up as they explained their works to a visitor or posed with their art — it reminded us why we do what we do. Art empowers, art uplifts.'
Pejiman's horse eyes the horizon.
The Funun Arts Group spaces saw dignitaries and students, seasoned collectors and first-time buyers, finding something to admire, connect with, or be inspired by. 'Each day of the fair was alive with colour, conversation, and creative synergy,' says Farah Khan. She noted that 'the UAE has become a global art and culture hub. And platforms like World Art Dubai are not just exhibitions — they are incubators of talent, dialogue, and dreams.'

With nine successful years behind them, the Khan Sisters and their ever-growing community of artists, are looking ahead. Plans for international exhibitions, youth mentorships, art-tech collaborations and cross-cultural residencies, are already underway. 'We don't just want to exhibit — we want to educate, innovate, and elevate,' says Shiba Khan. 'Funun Arts Group stands for creativity with purpose - and we're only just getting started.' World Art Dubai is the largest art fair in the GCC region, attracting thousands of visitors, VIP guests, collectors and artists from all over the globe. With over 10,000 artworks on display, its 2025 version was a major commemoration of the world's creative spirit.

UAE: From dubbing to acting, how these 8 Emiratis promote a love for Indian cinema
With Indian diaspora making up the largest expat community in UAE, it is no surprise that the two cultures have shared experiences, exchanged local art, and members of each community learning the languages of the other. As the Indian expat community came pouring in to UAE, many citizens found themselves drawn to the world of Indian cinema, with its unique storylines, song and dance numbers, and a sometimes flair for the dramatic. Emiratis who grew up watching Indian movies as a child became adults who contributed to the creation of these films. Here are some UAE-based talents who have showcased their love for Indian cinema by acting, dubbing, or even producing Indian movies. Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels. 1. Khalid Al Ameri The Emirati influencer and content creator has been very open about his love for all things Indian; from music to food, his feed prominently features videos trying out different aspects of the South Asian culture, and collaborations with Indian content creators. Khalid Al Ameri recently shared a story announcing an appearance in upcoming Malayalam action film Chatha Pacha: The Ring of Rowdies. This will mark his debut in Indian cinema; as no character details are known, the intrigue remains for viewers who are curious about what role Ameri will be playing in the WWE-inspired drama set in the coastal city of Kochi. 2. Noora and Mariam Al Helali The two Emirati sisters in their 20s first garnered widespread attention on social media for their native-like fluency in Malayalam, and their deep knowledge of movies and cultural references. Growing up with Malayalam-speaking nannies and studying in a catholic school in Sharjah shaped their multicultural experience. The two sisters found that there were many similarities between Emirati, and Indian, specifically Keralite culture. The young adults who had grown up watching and adoring movies from Kerala got to work on a dream project when they lent their voice to several characters for Emirati-dubbed Malayalam film Turbo Arabic, which released in August 2024, starring Mammootty. 3. Ahmad Al Marzooqi Turbo Arabic was the first Emirati-dubbed Malayalam film to have a theatrical release in the region, and it brought on multiple Emiratis to voice the characters in the film, including content creator Ahmad Al Marzooqi. Al Marzooqi, sometimes called "Bollywood Wikipedia", first fell in love with Indian cinema when he watched Sanjay-Dutt starrer Khal Nayak with his mother, he earlier told Khaleej Times. He then began watching all Bollywood-related TV channels, and soon began to no longer need subtitles. The renowned Emirati personality had already been doing voice-overs for his own channel, which made him somewhat familiar with the process. 4. Nahla Al Fahad While some contribute to the film process by acting and dubbing, yet others support movies through roles that may not show on screen, but are crucial to the filmmaking process. Award-winning Emirati filmmaker Nahla Al Fahad's fondest childhood memories is that of watching a Bollywood film every week. Moved by the emotions that underpin Indian storylines, she said she connected to "Indian culture through the movies". The UAE filmmaker went on to co-produce the Malayalam film Momo in Dubai in 2023, alongside Indian producers Harris Desom and Anish PB. The film, much like the diversity among the producers, showcased a meeting of Indians with the UAE. It captured the dreams and aspirations of Keralite expats in the region despite financial hardships, portraying an age-old story of Indian diaspora in their new home. 5. Bader Ali Habib and Sakina Suhail This Emirati couple combined their love for 'desi' culture, and their fascination of Prithvi Theatre on a visit to Mumbai, to create a community in Dubai where "desi arts, stories, pop culture, and food could come together under one roof.' The husband-wife duo reflected on how the growing expat population in the 1990s led to stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra, becoming household names among Emiratis. Called Saanjh Dubai, the community hosts movie nights and desi cultural and artistic gatherings. It also fosters a 'digital home' for popular characters, with posts on Instagram showcasing Simran's father waiting for a ride in the Dubai Metro; about to live a 'jee ley apni zindagi'(live your life, girl)! 6. Mansoor Al Feeli The legendary Emirati actor was the first to play a role in a Bollywood film, termed Dishoom. Mansoor Al Feeli is a prominent artist who has acted in several films, including Hub Malki (Royal Love) Leban Mutheleg and Do' Damis (The Light of Darkness). The movie has a special UAE connect, having filmed at 30 different locations in Abu Dhabi, including Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Liwa desert and Reem Island. Dishoom portrays the disappearance of Indian cricketer Viraj Sharma, a short time before an India vs. Pakistan match. The movie stars John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Varun Dhawan, with the two male actors playing cops that lead a chase through UAE to find the cricketer.

July Festival delivers historic milestone for Dubai's Godolphin stable
At Newmarket, the long-established heartbeat of British flat racing, Godolphin added another significant chapter to its illustrious racing story with a weekend to remember at the July Festival. The Dubai-owned stable proudly celebrated its 450th Group 1 triumph, while retained jockey William Buick marked his 2,000th career win. The defining moment came on Friday as Cinderella's Dream, a filly bred in the royal blue tradition of excellence, stormed to a stirring victory in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes to mark Godolphin's 450th top-level win since the stable was founded in 1993. Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by Buick, Cinderella's Dream showed trademark grit and class as she fended off a determined challenge from Irish raider January, pulling half a length clear at the finish. 'This filly is all class,' said Buick, who was celebrating his 60th Group 1 win with Godolphin. 'She gave everything, and it's days like these that make the job so rewarding.' The victory was the centrepiece of a sensational Friday treble for the Appleby-Buick axis, with King's Charter landing the Heritage Handicap and Distant Storm taking the Weatherbys British EBF Maiden Stakes. Buick joins Racing Royalty But before Cinderella's Dream stole the show, Thursday had already delivered a moment of personal significance for Buick. In the Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes, his masterful ride aboard El Cordobes brought home a victory that sealed his 2,000th British win, a milestone that cements the 36-year-old Norwegian-born jockey as one of the modern greats of the weighing room. 'I'm incredibly proud,' Buick said. 'To do it here at Newmarket, for Charlie and Godolphin, it means everything. I owe so much to my family, and to everyone at Godolphin who has supported me since I joined as a stable jockey in 2015.' Since then, Buick has won the British jockeys' title in 2022 and 2023, and ridden more than 150 winners in each of those championship years, including one in the coveted Epsom Derby in 2018 aboard the legendary Masar. The three-day July Festival ultimately reaffirmed Godolphin's deep resources and competitiveness, although Saturday brought mixed fortunes. The day's big story came from outside their camp, as former jockey-turned-trainer Richard Hughes delivered a shock result in the Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup (G1), saddling rank outsider No Half Measures to a stunning victory, two decades after he won the same race aboard Oasis Dream. Notable Speech, Godolphin's star miler and 2,000 Guineas winner who went into the race as the favourite, couldn't replicate that form and finished sixth in the six-furlong sprint. Al Basti's Commitment to Racing Race sponsor Al Basti Equiworld, a prominent equine industry supplier based in Dubai, was established in 1998, demonstrates a strong global commitment to top-level horse racing through both marquee sponsorships and holistic investment in racing communities worldwide. Spanning Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, and Dubai, their support includes high-profile races as well as grassroots initiatives like jockey development schemes, reflecting a dedication to nurturing the sport's future. Back at Newmarket, Godolphin did not leave the final day's race empty-handed. In the Group 2 Superlative Stakes, two-year-old Saba Desert overcame a stuttering start to power home under Buick, sealing Godolphin's eighth win in the race's history. The win was a nod to former champions like Dubawi, Master of the Seas, and Native Trail, who used the race as a springboard to elite careers. Trainer Appleby hinted at high hopes for the young Dubawi colt: 'Saba Desert did everything we could have asked for, he's a colt with real potential. He wasn't straightforward today, but that often brings out the best in the good ones.' With targets like the G1 National Stakes or Dewhurst now under discussion, Saba Desert may well be the next headline act from a stable that is showing no sign of slowing down. By the Numbers: Godolphin & Buick 450 Group 1 wins worldwide for Godolphin since its founding in 1993. 2,000 Career British wins for William Buick after Thursday's Princess of Wales's Stakes. 10 Group 1 wins for Godolphin in the 2025 season to date. 60+ Group 1 victories by Buick in Godolphin colours since 2015. 2 British Champion Jockey titles in the Godolphin colours for Buick (2022, 2023).
