William Byron thinks Iowa win can build momentum for NASCAR's playoffs

NEWTON, Iowa — William Byron was already locked into the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs and was second in the regular-season point standings heading into Sunday's race at Iowa Speedway.
Still, Byron didn't like how things were going heading into the closing stretch of the regular season.
Byron had five finishes of 27th or worse in the last eight races, and coming to a track where he has had success in the past, he wanted to regain some confidence with the playoffs approaching.
'I think we've been fast every weekend,' Byron said. 'I mean, I can't think of a week when we've been slow, it's just the results haven't come together. And it was starting to wear on us a little bit and starting to create some kind of, 'What's going to happen next?''
What happened next, though, was Byron getting his second win of the season on Sunday, gambling on fuel mileage for a win that he thought had changed the momentum of his season.
Byron went the last 144 laps of the 350-lap race without a stop, and a third stage filled with caution flags helped him conserve enough fuel to get to the finish.
He left Iowa Speedway, where he has now won in all three of NASCAR's series, with an 18-point lead over Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott for the regular-season title.
'This is going to kind of put the pendulum the other way,' Byron said.
Byron won the season-opening Daytona 500, and has eight top-10 finishes this season, including three second-place finishes. But he had a 37th-place finish at Atlanta, a 40th-place finish at the Chicago street race, and 31st-place finish at Dover. He was 16th last week at Indianapolis, when he had to make a late pit stop for fuel.
Surviving to win this one is something that crew chief Rudy Fugle expected.
'He's an awesome driver,' Fugle said. 'I think he's the best driver, all-around, in the field right now. He's mine, and I should say that. But I really think he's maturing and getting the experience to show that off. He's very well-diversified, and then he's a fighter. He's got a hard line and fights through anything. There's no quit in him.'
Byron had fuel-mileage issues late at Michigan, and again last week at Indianapolis. Even with that, Fugle knew he could still gamble with his driver.
'Those are things that he's gotten better as well over the years, rolling with the punches and what happens next,' Fugle said. 'And next thing you know, you're leading and you get a chance to win.'
Byron admitted he was nervous as the laps dwindled on Sunday.
'I knew what to expect,' he said. 'I knew what to look for, and all that in terms of if I ran out of fuel. But I was just thinking about preserving as much as I could, doing a lot of different things in the car, lifting early and just not using a lot of throttle percentage. So just the guys did a really good job coaching me on what to do.'
Byron thought there was a little fuel left in the tank at the end.
'I felt like if I could get off of (turn) four, come into the white (flag), I could win the race,' he said. 'So that's kind of what was in my head. And that was mostly true. When I did the burnout, at the tail end of the burnout, I had the fuel pressure come up. So I don't know how many laps that would have been.'
Now, Byron said, he has new fuel to get to the playoffs.
'I really feel like we needed to win a race like this, we deserve to win a race based on how we've grown all year, and it just wasn't happening,' Byron said. 'It's is just a big relief for us to have one kind of go our way. We've just been running so well this year, I feel like this is going to be a big momentum boost for our team.'

Lucid Q2 earnings preview: Gravity SUV ramp, path to profitability big questions for investors

Pure-play EV maker Lucid (LCID) will report second quarter results after the bell as the company ramps up production of its Gravity SUV and hopes to assuage investors' fears over a lack of profitability. Meanwhile, Lucid stock is down over 20% year to date. Lucid is expected to report Q2 revenue of $262.4 million, per Bloomberg consensus estimates, higher than the $200.6 million reported a year ago. Lucid is expected to post an adjusted EPS loss of $0.22, with an adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) loss of $603.6 million. The company has had a busy 2025 so far, including the start of low-volume production of the Gravity SUV. Early last month, Lucid said it produced 3,863 vehicles and delivered 3,309 vehicles in the second quarter, with its total for the first half of the year hitting 6,075 vehicles produced and 6,418 vehicle deliveries. Read more: Live coverage of corporate earnings Lucid also announced in July that it would partner with Uber (UBER) to create a robotaxi service run by the ride-hailing company, which will purchase 20,000 Lucid EVs over the next five years. The company also added access to the Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger network for its vehicles, unlocking more than 23,000 new chargers for use. Lucid also initiated plans to perform a 10-to-one reverse stock split, which won't occur until later this year. In terms of guidance, Lucid said in the past that it expects 2025 production to hit 20,000 EVs, more than double the 9,029 it produced last year. The company also said it would launch its upcoming midsize-volume SUV in 2026, which is expected to help the company increase scale and bring it closer to profitability. Profitability is the big question mark for the company. Given its production and expected loss figures, Lucid is expected to post an adjusted EBITDA loss figure of around $161,000 per car produced. On the earnings call, analysts likely will be asking management about how the company intends to bridge itself to profitability in the near future. Rivian (RIVN), for example, has achieved gross profit in its operations. The expected loss of the $7,500 federal tax credit on Sept. 30 is also likely to put a dent in Lucid's sales. Lucid is able to receive the credit for all of its vehicles via a lease loophole known as the "commercial clean vehicle credit." Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. Broncos QB Bo Nix provides behind-the-scenes look at offseason training

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix silenced a lot of doubters in 2024 when he led the team to the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. The biggest question coming into 2025 is, "Can he keep this up?" Nix is doing everything in his power to make sure the answer to that question is a resounding yes. Nix released a nine-minute video documenting two days of his offseason training on Monday, giving fans an inside look at what he has been doing to perform better than he did last season. The video, "The In Between: Bo Nix," shows Nix doing various throwing, workout and sprinting drills, all aimed to help Nix remain in top physical form going into 2025. What the video doesn't show is the extra effort Nix put in aside from these sessions. Nix reached out to NFL legends such as Drew Brees, Peyton and Eli Manning and worked with longtime throwing guru Tom House to help improve his form and his habits. "The in between is what nobody really sees, and to me, it's the most important part of the journey," said Nix in the video, speaking about the offseason. "It reflects what you're going to do in the season. So if I don't train hard, if I don't train correctly, if I don't train with the end in mind, I'm just going to go out there and kind of waste time. And yeah, it'll be difficult, it won't be fun in the moment, but when you get in the game, it makes those training moments more special." Nix's training and leadership will be a boon to a hungry Broncos organization with Super Bowl aspirations.
