Wage hike: Contract sanitary workers feel deceived by Coimbatore corporation
Coimbatore: Contract sanitary workers on Saturday accused the city corporation of deceiving them by promising to hike their wages to around Rs681 per day from around Rs560, with effect from May 1, 2025. The temporary workers said it was following a protest in April that the city corporation agreed to pay them around Rs681 per day. "The civic body said the gross salary it could offer was Rs20,454 per month. Officials told us that the revised salary will come into effect from May 1. But in May, those of us who worked for the entire month without taking any leave were paid only around Rs16,000 after deductions. It looks like the civic body is deducting both the employee's and employer's contributions to the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme and the provident fund (PF) from our salaries. If it does so, it's unfair," said one of the contract workers, who didn't want to be named. After receiving the salary for the month of May, more than 2,000 contract sanitary workers had taken out nearly a week-long protest in the first week of June, seeking the revised wage. Following a series of negotiations with the workers' unions, the corporation had agreed to pay them Rs681 per day for 30 working days, including four weekly off days. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The workers' demand for payslips was also accepted, and the payslip for May was issued in July. Commenting on the salary mentioned in the payslip, Tamil Nadu Selvam, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Scavengers General Employees Union, said the city corporation was deceiving the contract sanitary workers. "The payslip shows that both the employee's and employer's contributions to the insurance scheme and PF were deducted from the workers' salaries, which is against the law. Say, if the monthly salary is Rs20,400, one should be paid approximately Rs18,800 after the deductions for ESI and PF. Instead, they were paid just Rs16,000," he said. Santhanam Kumar, one of the contract workers, wondered whether the law allows for double deduction for the ESI and PF benefits. "If we are still getting only Rs16,000, what difference did the negotiations make? Drivers are paid better than the sanitary workers. We are the ones who clear the city's waste, regardless of our health, family and timing. Even if a worker goes on leave for two days, the accumulated waste is still cleared by the same worker. " While TOI made several attempts to reach corporation officials for a comment on the allegations raised by the contract sanitary workers, no one was available for a comment.

Urban expansion alters Vizag's natural landscape
Visakhapatnam: The erstwhile combined Visakhapatnam district has undergone a dramatic transformation in its land use and land cover (LULC) over the past two decades, with rapid urbanisation and industrial expansion reshaping its landscape between 2000 and 2023. A recent analysis by researchers from Vignan's Institute of Information Technology, Visakhapatnam, using supervised classification through ArcGIS, reveals significant shifts in key land categories. In 2000, Visakhapatnam exhibited a relatively balanced LULC distribution. Agricultural land dominated, covering 37.42% of the area, followed closely by forest vegetation at 35.10%. Barren lands occupied 16.5%, while built-up areas stood at 7.98%. Water bodies and industrial areas made up smaller proportions at 1.68% and 1.29% respectively. By 2023, the urban fabric had visibly intensified. The built-up area surged to 18.7%, marking an 11.92% increase tied directly to population growth and the expanding demand for housing, commercial zones, and transport infrastructure. This rise was fuelled by new residential and commercial developments across the district. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like איפה הכי כדאי להשקיע כסף? כלכלה מעשית מידע נוסף Undo Industrial areas also grew substantially, climbing from 1.29% in 2000 to 10.3% in 2023 — a change associated with new pharmaceutical ventures and overall industrialisation in the wake of Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation. This growth corresponds to a 7.54% expansion per lakh population, according to the study's estimates. At the same time, natural and agricultural areas saw notable reductions. Agricultural land dropped from 37.42% to 26.3%, reflecting steady encroachment driven by urban and industrial expansion. Forest vegetation, despite a brief resurgence in 2020 due to post-cyclone restoration, decreased overall from 35.10% to 26.7%, with Cyclone Hudhud in 2015 contributing significantly to this decline. Water bodies, essential for ecological balance, declined marginally from 1.68% to 1.4%. This reduction is linked to industrial growth, land reclamation, and runoff-related degradation. Meanwhile, barren lands showed minimal change, inching up from 16.5% to 16.6%. The study projects that population growth will continue to shape land dynamics through 2030, stressing the importance of geospatial monitoring tools like ArcGIS and methods like supervised classification to guide sustainable development. Visakhapatnam's trajectory mirrors broader patterns in coastal urbanisation across India, where infrastructure progress often intersects with challenges in conserving vital ecosystems. The study was conducted by Brahmaiah Borigarla, Rajesh Adigarla, and Jyotheesh Alla from the Department of Civil Engineering at Vignan's Institute of Information Technology. The research report is titled "Land Use Land Cover Change Detection of Urban Area Using RS and GIS – A Case Study of Visakhapatnam District", published as Chapter 13 in the Proceedings of the International Conference on Engineering Materials and Sustainable Societal Development.

Start flights from Navi Mum airport by end of Sept: CM
Navi Mumbai/Pune: Stating that 94% of the work on the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was over, CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the remaining work should proceed in such a way that the first passenger flight can start operations by end of Sept. He said airport authorities had been asked to increase the numerical strength of workers to meet this target. Along with the airport, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway 'missing link' project will help the state govt develop an economic corridor comprising Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune, he said. For the 'missing link' project too, though MSRDC has set a Dec 2025 deadline, the CM said he was hoping for completion in Oct-Nov. On his way to Pune by road, Fadnavis reviewed the progress of the airport and 'missing link' work with Dy CM Eknath Shinde. The airport's initial phases will accommodate 20 million passengers and 0.8 mn metric tonnes of cargo annually from Sept 2025, he added. He expressed satisfaction that PM Modi , who performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the airport in 2018, will also inaugurate the facility in Sept. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Explora seguros de auto para personas mayores en Chile en 2025 FindingFrenzy Más información Undo He said, "Currently 13,000 to 14,000 workers are involved in the work daily, and we have asked authorities to increase their strength by one-and-a-half times or double by Sept 30, because other licences are complete, but for commercial operations, all work has to be finished." On Oct 11, 2024, an IAF C-295 transport aircraft completed the inaugural landing at the airport. Subsequently, on Dec 29, 2024, an IndiGo Airlines Airbus A320 made the first commercial landing. Connectivity to the airport is also a major focus, the CM said. "We have prepared a big connectivity plan. The linking of Atal Setu to Coastal Road is expected to be completed by March next year. From Thane, a direct elevated road has been suggested and that work will also start soon," he said. Arrangements are being made for connecting the airport from four directions with all modes of transport, including suburban railway, metro or water transport, so that it will be easy for passengers to reach, he said. On the 'missing link' project, Fadnavis said in Pune, "The Navi Mumbai airport is nearing completion and once the missing link gets ready, Pune residents will be able to reach Navi Mumbai airport in a little more than an hour. The missing link project will help them avoid 6 km of the expressway and save half an hour of travel time." The 'missing link' project – a 13.5 km tunnel-bridge-road section from under the Lonavla ghats – has missed three deadlines: July and Dec 2024 and July 2025. The Rs 6,695 crore project is expected to cut travel time between Mumbai and Pune by half an hour by bypassing the congested ghat section. It aims to ease traffic, reduce accidents, improve fuel efficiency, and offer seamless connectivity between the two cities. "While MSRDC set a Dec 2025 deadline, we are hoping for Oct-Nov completion," Fadnavis said. When the other planned or under-construction augmentation projects such as Chowk (Pune-Eway)-Pagote (JNPT) 30 km road, Sewri-Worli connector and smaller flyovers towards the expressway are completed, travel time between the two cities will reduce by an hour. Eighty-five per cent of the Expressway's current traffic is projected to use the new route. At the site after reviewing the 'missing link' project, Fadnavis described it as an engineering marvel, noting that it features India's longest road tunnel and highest cable-stayed road bridge under construction over the scenic Tiger Valley. "Pune is the cultural capital of the state, but now it has also developed as the manufacturing and technology capital. Therefore, these projects are important for all of Maharashtra," the CM said.
