Investment in Transport is Critical for Wrexham's Future
There's no doubt about it – North Wales is primed for growth. With its growing cluster of advanced manufacturing businesses, a skilled workforce, and game-changing industrial developments being brought forward, the region is set to become a key contributor to the UK's wider economic prosperity.
But there's one critical piece of the puzzle still missing: modern, reliable transport infrastructure that serves the needs of local communities and businesses and connects North Wales seamlessly to other major UK cities.
Government figures, including Andrew Ranger, MP for Wrexham, and Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, have added their voices to calls for improvements to the region's transport infrastructure. And just last month, Sam Rowlands, MS for North Wales, called for improved public transport links to and from Wrexham Industrial Estate.
FI Real Estate Management, the commercial property firm I lead, has had a presence on Wrexham Industrial Estate for 20 years. During that time, we've grown our footprint to 3.1m sq ft, invested £136m in the region, and we're continuing to generate considerable benefit, delivering an estimated £1.2bn in economic value over the next decade.
The announcement of the £160m Advanced Manufacturing Investment Zone earlier this year, which is now creating clear incentives for occupiers to consider Wrexham as a strategic UK destination to expand into, adds more weight to the place-based proposition for North Wales and its attractiveness to national and international investors.
I'm certainly encouraged by this week's announcement from the Chancellor of £445 million in funding for new rail projects in Wales, including proposed improvements to the Wrexham-Liverpool line and upgrades to the North Wales mainline. Investment in critical infrastructure is essential to unlocking economic growth, and this commitment marks a positive step toward addressing the region's transport needs.
But we need to go further and faster. I remain eager to hear the specifics on the government's plan to improve connectivity in and around the UK's second largest industrial estate.
Investment in infrastructure to the tune of £113bn nationally represents a very real commitment from the government to prioritise the growth of the economy across the regions of the UK, but we need to ensure that parts of North Wales do not get left in the shadows of England's city regions.
The Welsh government has set out a clear vision for North Wales as a hub for innovation and advanced industries. Wrexham, with its rich industrial history and newly designated Investment Zone status, is central to that ambition. But without the infrastructure to match its potential, there is a real risk that businesses may look elsewhere. With growing concerns that current transport limitations could hinder operations, supply chain efficiency, and future growth, a lack of reliable connectivity may ultimately undermine Wrexham's competitiveness.
As we continue to develop two game-changing logistics schemes on the industrial estate – Wrexham 1M and Wrexham 152 – my focus remains on the employment opportunity for the region and the skilled jobs we're working to create. Earlier this week, we also submitted plans for a 77,000 sq ft facility on the southern edge of the estate.
Improving transport links to and from Wrexham Industrial Estate needs to be high on the agenda for these opportunities to come to fruition. The estate and its existing community of businesses, which includes Kellogg's and JCB, are central to driving regional and national economic growth. Without a clear plan for targeted improvements to its transport links, Wrexham Industrial Estate will be held back.
I'm incredibly optimistic about the future of Wrexham. It's a place I've long championed for its rich industrial heritage matched by a forward-thinking, entrepreneurial spirit. Improved connectivity would unlock new economic opportunities, opening the door to increased private investment, accelerated business development, and greater access to skilled labour markets.
This week will have brought optimism to many businesses in the region and there's much to be celebrated. For me, the question remains as to how Wrexham Industrial Estate, and its cluster of ambitious businesses, fit into the government's priorities, at both a local and national level.
Wrexham Industrial Estate is a critical centre for UK industry. Improved infrastructure, and the enhanced connectivity that that will enable, is the key to unlocking its full economic potential. Now is the time to invest in Wrexham's future.

The truck has had a presence at Bridgend designer outlet for the last year. Speaking ahead of the opening of their new location, Mr Sadlos said: "It's an exciting time. "When Ansh decided to close, we got in touch with the landlords and decided to take it over." The restaurant's menu consists of seven different burgers, along with loaded fries and sides, and has gained a great reputation for the quality of its food. We tried it ourselves. It has been visited by professional competitive eaters at its Port Talbot restaurant, including Randy Santel, Katina Eats Kilos, Joel Hansen (modelvsfood) and Leah Shutkever. Mr Sadlos added: "We are going to be serving the same menu that people are used to, and we are actually working on developing a little prep kitchen where we can bring in some smoked meats and some more American-style barbecue items. Prime Minister meets trainee pilots and sees a flight simulator at RAF Valley
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met trainee pilots and their families and was shown a flight simulator on a visit to RAF Valley on Anglesey. The No 10. leader made the visit yesterday to help mark Armed Forces Day today as he prepared to attend the Welsh Labour Party conference in Llandudno. Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday of June. It is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the UK's military units. The PM was joined at RAF Valley by Wales' First Minister Eluned Morgan MS and Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens MP. Today on Armed Forces Day there will be events to support serving personnel, service families, veterans and cadets. They will take place across the country with a national event in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire. More details of the legal duty will be set out in due course but could include initiatives such as extending travel benefits to the families of veterans and the bereaved, or flexible working for partners of serving personnel who are required to move as part for their role in the Armed Forces. The Government says this delivers on a manifesto promise and is part of the Government's commitment to renew the nation's contract with those who serve and following the Strategic Defence Review, which underscored the role the Armed Forces play in protecting our national security, which it says is the foundation of the Government's Plan for Change. The Government says it is committed to renewing its contract with the Armed Forces community, delivering two above inflation pay awards for service personnel and an extra £1.5bn investment this parliament to improve forces' family housing through the Strategic Defence Review. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: 'Across the country and around the world, our service personnel and their families make the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe and protect our freedom and our way of life. 'When I became Prime Minister, I made a promise to serve those who have served us. The Prime Minister says he has 'every confidence in the First Minister and Welsh Labour' ahead of next year's Senedd election. Sir Keir Starmer was speaking to ITV Cymru Wales on a visit to RAF Valley on Anglesey. He'll also speak to Welsh Labour members at the party's conference in Llandudno today. In her speech to the conference, Eluned Morgan is expected to underline how difficult next year will be, saying that 'The next Senedd election won't be a routine affair. It will be a moment of reckoning. "Reform are rising. Plaid are mobilising. And across the country, people are asking big, serious questions about the kind of future they want for Wales.' The most recent Barn Cymru poll for ITV Wales and Cardiff University suggests that Labour could come third behind Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. Starmer to warn of 'backroom stitch-up' in Welsh elections I asked Keir Starmer if he was worried that Labour might lose Wales after more than a quarter of a century in power and a century dominating Welsh politics. He said that 'I have every confidence in the First Minister and Welsh Labour. They have delivered over many years for Wales and we have the added advantage now that, with a Labour government in Westminster, working hand in hand with the Welsh Government we are able to deliver... ...just to give some examples, the biggest settlement in the budget since devolution, hugely important under the spending review; much more money into transport in Wales; money for coal tips; money into the energy sector; supporting through the defence spend the 6,000 or so jobs in Wales. The Prime Minister's visit comes after a week in which he was forced to make major concessions on plans to reform disability welfare payments, following a threatened rebellion by Labour backbenchers. I asked him why it had taken that threat to force him to act and not earlier calls for a rethink from the First Minister. He said, 'I think that's the opposite of what you've just put to me because, true it is that the First Minister raised issues with me; we've been engaging with her and others. And look, for me, some of these things are common sense. "I want to get this right. I want the package right and therefore we've had a discussion with the First Minister and others as a result of which we've changed the package and that means that we can deliver the overall reform that we need now. 'In politics sometimes people pretend it's much more complicated than it is. It's common sense to hold a proposition up to the light and make sure it's the right package. We've done that now, we've adjusted the package, I'm pleased that we've gone through that exercise and now we can get on with delivery.' In her conference speech, Eluned Morgan, is expected to say that the 'moment of reckoning' created by the pressures from Plaid Cymru and Reform UK will mean that Labour needs to work together. She's expected to say, 'This is not a moment to look away. This is the moment to look forward - a moment of maximum opportunity and, yes, also of serious threat. It's time to stand up. It's time to get involved. 'Now, for the first time in a generation, we have two Labour governments - in Cardiff and Westminster - working together, pulling in the same direction. 'Reform don't want to protect the NHS - they want to dismantle it. Rip it up and replace it with an insurance system. Privatised. Profit-driven. Out of reach for the people who need it most. Because in their world, your health depends on your wealth. 'They point to problems. We are the party of answers - not the party of excuses. Not the party of fear. But make no mistake - they are a threat. To your NHS. To your rights. To our Welsh way of life.' Meanwhile, the Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens will announce a new £11 million fund for businesses in Port Talbot and the surrounding area s. She's expected to tell the conference that the 'Economic Growth and Investment Fund' wil support companies that take on workers in that region. Away from politics, perhaps the most difficult question of all, knowing that the Prime Minister is a big football fan and a supporter of England, is who would he support in the Euros, Wales or England? 'The third game is England versus Wales. I went to see the Lionesses and we discussed that very fixture. I'm afraid I'm going to have to say this: good luck to Wales in every game other than when they play England because I'm an England fan and I will be supporting England on that occasion. "But for all other games the best of luck [to Wales] - it'll be a great game and the Lionesses know that that is going to be a really important game in the group and I've talked it through with them and their preparation for it.'
