Summer break may be in full swing, but Manitoba's largest employer of school bus drivers is ramping up recruitment to tackle a chronic workforce shortage.
'This was one of our worst end-of-school years — all the staff that could drive who work in the office had to actually drive every day for a month, month and a half,' said Danielle DesAutels, who manages a bus depot on Archibald Street.
First Student, a multinational transportation contractor that runs school bus routes and charter services, hosted its third Winnipeg open house on Thursday.

The company's annual recruitment drive began in 2023 in response to growing demand for student transportation and a wave of retirements during and following the COVID-19 pandemic.
First Student has more than 400 bus drivers, the majority of whom are semi-retired seniors, on its local roster.
Its Manitoba division needs to hire about 65 extra employees ahead of September to meet the ballooning needs of its clients, DesAutels said.
School boards typically hire First Student to supplement their respective fleets and driver pools, although the francophone school district relies almost entirely on the contractor to transport its students throughout the year.
No matter where someone lives, they don't need to look far if they're interested in a role that can involve bussing 70 young students at a time in stressful traffic situations, said Alan Campbell, president of the Manitoba School Boards Association.
'School bus driving is not an easy gig… It is among the most challenging positions in the sector, full stop,' said Campbell, a veteran school trustee whose day job involves transportation logistics.

He cited the stressful nature of the job, as well as a cost-of-living crisis that has rendered part-time work less desirable, as the major reasons for a 'significant' shortage of drivers that has caused service disruptions.
Boards have rolled out more incentives, such as paid training, to compete with First Student and recruit drivers in recent years, Campbell noted.
First Student offers $22.72, with a guaranteed four hours of payment per shift no matter how long it takes for a route to complete.
Employees are not unionized compared to their counterparts in the Winnipeg School Division and elsewhere.
Just days after the final bell rang, educational assistant Mike Webster showed up to 421 Archibald St. eager to test-drive a yellow bus on the lot.
'It was a lot of fun. It's huge and you've got (seven) mirrors — you can see absolutely everything,' the 52-year-old said.
Webster said he's keen to pad the school day and his paycheque with a gig at First Student in 2025-26.
Another bonus? 'I love kids,' he said, noting he prides himself on spreading positivity and helping students 'have the best day possible' in his existing roles.

The father of two juggles multiple jobs, as a tutor, music teacher and crossing guard. The rising price of his grocery bill — 'both my kids are going through growth spurts' — warrants another, he said.
First Student employees served smokies hot off a barbecue in their parking lot to drum up excitement among potential candidates.
Randine Chomyshen, a trainer, safety officer and assistant manager, said her pitch is that it's a flexible and permanent part-time job that gives people a purpose.
Chomyshen was among the staffers who had to return to the road after spring break due to sick calls and coverage gaps.
'Fourteen years ago, when I started here, this office had 40 LR (Louis Riel School Division) routes. Now we have 74. That's just one example of how much one division has grown,' she recalled.
The Pembina Trails School Division, which relies on its own drivers and contracted employees from First Student, had to adjust start and end times on numerous campuses in September 2023 to double-route buses.
The changes have 'mostly addressed' issues related to the driver shortage and size of its fleet, said Radean Carter, communications officer for the division.
Jodi Ruta — better known as Jodi the Bus Driver to her 150,000 followers on TikTok — applied to be a school bus driver in 2020 to make ends meet when her dog-training business was disrupted during the initial COVID-19 lockdown.
Ruta said what was supposed to be a short-term job at a rural school division turned into a fulfilling career, owing to the students she has met and watched grow up.
'I told them on the last day of school that if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be in this job,' she said, noting that members of Gen Z and Gen Alpha may get a bad wrap, but they teach her something new every day she drives a bus.

People seeking tourism opportunities in Manitoba have a new resource. Indigenous Tourism Manitoba and The Forks North Portage Partnership celebrated the grand opening on Friday of Explore Indigenous, a new space that aims to build awareness and understanding of Indigenous-led tourism experiences in the keystone province. Located at The Forks Market, the downtown Winnipeg discovery centre offers self-guided learning tools and interpretative displays that introduce visitors to Indigenous Tourism Manitoba's network of operators — who they are, where they're located and what types of experiences they offer. Rotating displays and videos help tell the stories of Indigenous tourism operators in Manitoba and staff are on hand to answer questions. The space is also home to Turtle Tours, a new Indigenous-owned and led tourism company that offers guided walking tours and cultural experiences that invite participants to learn about the land, hear the stories that have shaped Indigenous Peoples and connect with their stories. 'Indigenous tourism plays a vital role in sharing culture, history and community perspectives in a way that's both authentic and enriching,' said Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Nellie Kennedy. She added in 2023, Indigenous tourism contributed nearly $91 million to Manitoba's GDP, supported more than 1,600 full-time equivalent jobs and generated $39 million in potential tax revenue. 'These numbers speak to not only (Indigenous tourism's) economic strength but also to the growing interest in experiences that are led by Indigenous communities and grounded in their stories,' Kennedy said. 'Indigenous tourism is a cornerstone of our tourism sector.' Even with all the work that's been done to grow Indigenous tourism in recent years, many people are still unaware of who operators are and where to find them, said Holly Spence, CEO of Indigenous Tourism Manitoba. 'Our hope is by creating this (Explore Indigenous) awareness and creating an avenue for consumers to book experiences that it'll drive business (and) create economic development, jobs and revenue for our industry and for our Indigenous people from Manitoba,' Spence said. Ashley Smith had that same goal in mind when she started Turtle Tours. The 42-year-old entrepreneur also owns and operates Turtle Village, a tourist destination in Riding Mountain National Park in southwest Manitoba. She runs the businesses with her husband, Jason, and their three children, Jaylee, Keeson and Dawnjae. Turtle Tours' first offering is a one-hour walking tour of The Forks that includes stops at long-established landmarks like the Oodena Celebration Circle and new features like the Woven Relations garden. 'We really notice that people don't know the actual history here of Winnipeg and The Forks and the importance of it, pre- and post-contact,' Smith said. 'So, that's the foundation that we want to lay.' Celebrating the grand opening of the discovery centre and Turtle Tours was surreal, Smith said, adding she felt honoured to be present with Indigenous Tourism Manitoba and other operators from the province. Alongside the opening of the space, Indigenous Tourism Manitoba launched its new guidebook, Adventure to Understanding, which highlights Original Original-accredited operators across the province. Explore Indigenous is now open Fridays to Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Spence said, adding the centre's operating hours will expand 'in the near future.' The presence of Explore Indigenous is an important part of The Forks' commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space for everyone, said Jessica Floresco, chief operating officer of The Forks North Portage Partnership. Indigenous Tourism Manitoba and Turtle Tours are creating opportunities for visitors to engage and learn, Floresco added. 'These experiences highlight stories that are often left untold and we believe they are essential in moving forward together in a good way,' she said. Brokenhead Ojibway Nation plans 60 acres of economic expansion

Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Chief Gordon Bluesky's field of dreams is one step closer to reality. 'I call it that because I always drive past it and say it's going to be something one day,' he said, standing in front of a 60-acre soybean field on the northeast edge of Winnipeg. The goal is to turn it into 60 acres of residential, commercial and retail development. NICOLE BUFFIE / FREE PRESS Brokenhead Ojibway Nation Chief Gordon Bluesky on the East St. Paul farm field recently designated as reserve land. On Friday, Bluesky announced the parcel of land had been successfully transferred to the Manitoba First Nation from the Rural Municipality of East St. Paul, 16 years after it was initially purchased through a federal Treaty Land Entitlement claim. The land sits within the RM, on the boundary of the City of Winnipeg, east of Highway 59 and south of the Perimeter Highway. Bluesky is eyeing the area as the next opportunity for economic prosperity for Brokenhead and the areas it surrounds. 'We've already increased the land value around our main reserve with the developments that we have there,' the chief said. 'The work that we're going to be doing on these lands doesn't just benefit First Nations people.' The transfer to reserve land is the first step in the site's redevelopment. Next will come consultations with surrounding landowners and community members from Brokenhead to see what is desired for the area. Affordable housing and retail are among the amenities expected to be built on the land, Bluesky said. The parcel is part of 480 acres previously purchased by the First Nation in the late 2000s. It was only recently was transferred to reserve status through the federal claim agreement, with a push by the provincial government through an order in council. Brokenhead also owns land in the RMs of Lac du Bonnet, Alexander and East St. Paul, and within Winnipeg (including the Westwood Village Inn and property on Nairn Avenue which is currently going through the reserve creation process). 'We're trying to fulfill our treaty land entitlement, which is an outstanding obligation from 1871 — our people were promised these lands,' Bluesky said. Federal Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs Rebecca Chartrand (Churchill—Keewatinook Aski) attended the ceremony on behalf of Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty. Chartrand called the transferred land a foundation for community prosperity. 'These new lands open doors, they bring opportunity through jobs, investment and thriving business that lift up entire communities.' Since 2006, more than one million acres across Canada have been transferred to reserves, Chartrand added. In Manitoba, about 10 other First Nations are eyeing transfers through Treaty Land Entitlement claims, which Chartrand said she would help advocate for. Bluesky compared the 60-acre parcel to the 160-acre Naawi-Oodena site along a portion of Kenaston Boulevard in south Winnipeg. The former Canadian Armed Forces land is jointly owned by the seven Treaty 1 Nations (Brokenhead, Long Plain, Peguis, Roseau River, Sagkeeng, Sandy Bay and Swan Lake). Naawi-Oodena recently opened its first business at the site: a gas bar/convenience store. Re: Carney has no choice: Trade deal with U.S. requires end of supply management Since 'supply management' (along with inter-provincial trade barriers) has been on the Fraser Institute's naughty list as supposedly reducing 'economic freedom' in Canada, it is no surprise that it is tossed out as a trade bargaining chip. Would this supposed bargaining position be discarded in exchange for nothing like the digital services tax was? I wrote to the federal minister of agriculture during the original General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade talks, explaining how supply management is actually an animal-rights issue, since you can't raise animals humanely on speculation. But now, with Canada's hard right-turn federally, all 'soft' issues standing in the way of economic freedom are jettisoned, along with Indigenous rights, the environment, entitlements and, apparently, Canada's sovereignty. We do not need a 'trade agreement' with the U.S. Any bargaining chips should be used to convince that rogue nation to conform to international law, and allow normal trade to proceed under WTO rules. For one thing, quotas should not be a marketable commodity. If you can afford to pay a million dollars to buy a quota, you can afford to sell your produce at a lower price. U.S. President Donald Trump keeps saying they don't need anything that Canada produces. So what makes him think we need their dairy products? Oh yes, he can't think. Farmers are easy to throw under the bus. The prairie farmers were certainly tossed when it was decided to tariff electric cars coming from China. The auto industry is important, but so is agriculture. Bruce Frankard, Vancouver Chickens and cows aren't widgets. They are living creatures that experience both physical and emotional pain. Ending supply management would initiate a race-to-the-bottom in dairy prices, and therefore in animal health and welfare. As Trump's big beautiful bill so clearly reveals that current U.S. leaders are willing — even eager — to sacrifice the health and welfare of their own citizens for the sake of bloated corporate profits and tax cuts. Given they don't even care about their own people, no way do U.S. leaders flinch at treating domestic animals as machine slaves. At what point do we become the 51st state simply by doing as Trump would like us to do, whether we're a separate nation or not? Keep Canada's supply management system. Deborah Jones, Delta Re: NDP alters course on supportive housing projects Low-barrier housing — such as supportive housing — is a necessity if there is to be a decrease in 'tent cities' and street use of substances. But after volunteering with an outreach support group for people who use substances, including many who live in supportive housing, it's been made clear to me that the existing situations are untenable. When there are suites crawling with cockroaches, broken elevators, flooding, thefts, and untreated overdoses, the residents have little reason to respect rules. The management needs to be accountable as well as the residents. Primarily, seniors with disabilities having no experience with substances should not be forced to live in supportive housing. Many fear for their safety in an unknown environment, and their isolation only increases. Secondly, people who are in recovery from substance use should not be forced to live in supportive housing. If our aim is to assist those folks, they should not be surrounded by triggers that can cause relapses. Thirdly, those living in supportive housing must be formally consulted and included in decision-making and allowed to take ownership of the circumstances where they live.
