Lower cut-offs fuel hope as MBBS applications surge

Time of India20-06-2025
Chennai: The state selection committee received nearly 60,000 applications for undergraduate medical and dental admissions on Friday, marking a 39.5% increase compared to the 43,000 applications received in 2024.
Officials expect at least 5,000 to 10,000 more applications before the June 25 deadline.
Of the 1,35,715 candidates who appeared for the medical entrance test this year, 76,181 (56%) qualified. While the number of students who qualified was fewer than in 2024, more students applied for admissions this year as lower NEET scores are likely to pull down cut-offs by at least 100 marks in almost all categories. As many students with similar scores are clustered between 451 and 550 marks, more candidates with fewer scores have applied for counselling this year.
"Students with a score of 450 – 500/720 marks in NEET 2024 did not stand a chance if they applied in the general category last year. This year, students are hopeful," said R Naveen, a student counsellor. "The govt's decision to open admission portal early has had its impact. Many people have applied because there was time," he added.
The admission, however, is likely to be tougher because of the clustering. Also, there have been no additional seats in existing colleges or new medical colleges in the state.
The TN health policy note in 2025 stated that Tamil Nadu has an annual admission capacity of 11,700 MBBS seats, with 5,050 seats in govt medical colleges. There are 22 self-financing private medical colleges, four private universities, and 13 deemed-to-be universities.
"This means the number of students getting admissions is unlikely to change. Also, if the performance is not similar to that of candidates from other seats, students from Tamil Nadu will find it difficult to get seats under all India quota seats," said student counsellor Manickavel Arumugam.

Counselling for med seat admissions on Aug 1

Panaji: 'Counselling will be held for medicine, dentistry, nursing, and allied health programmes. For ayurveda and homeopathy seats, the counselling schedule will be declared when the respective council declares their admission schedules,' said an official. There are around 170 state quota MBBS seats in Goa. 'The eligibility list will be declared by July 24 and the merit list by July 30 for NEET-based programmes. Admissions for pharmacy seats too will be held along with the medicine seat admissions as the NEET scores have come now. Pharmacy seat admissions are done either on the NEET score or the JEE Main score — whichever is higher — in physics and chemistry,' the official said. The first round of engineering seat admissions was completed, and the second round is expected to be held in Aug. Around 450 of 1,700 seats went vacant after the first admission round. 'Vacancies have been observed after the economically backward sections (EWS) quota was introduced. Before the quota, there were around 1,200 engineering seats in the state, of which around 1,100 would be filled. After the quota seats were added, a similar number of seats have been getting filled, but the additional ones are going vacant,' said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo As has been the trend in recent years, the directorate has proposed to state govt to relax the JEE criteria in the subsequent engineering admission rounds to allow the vacant seats to be filled. 'Even after relaxing the criteria, just around 50 more seats are seen to be getting filled in subsequent rounds. Relaxing JEE criteria allows any student with 45% marks in physics, chemistry, and maths in Class XII to apply for an engineering seat, even if he or she has not appeared for the JEE for some reason,' said the official. Most of the vacant seats are at the state's private engineering colleges, while those at the govt-run Goa Engineering College have mostly been taken.

NEET SS 2024 Counselling: NBEMS reduces qualifying percentile for the stray round

The NEET SS 2024 results were announced on April 25, following the exam held on March 29 and 30, which had three time-bound sections for the first time. As per the notification shared,' The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India vide letter No. U.12021/09/2025-MEC dated 10th July 2025 has allowed all the candidates who had appeared for NEET-SS 2024 exam with an eligible broad speciality degree (MD/MS/DNB) to participate in the Stray round of NEET-SS Super Speciality Counselling 2024,'. Moreover, the candidature is provisional, as mentioned on the NBEMS notice. The candidature is subject to the fulfilment of eligibility criteria as mentioned in the NEET-SS 2024 information bulletin and verification of Face ID/Biometric wherever required. Candidates are advised to stay in touch with the website of the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for the latest information related to the upcoming NEET-SS 2024 stray round counselling. For any SS queries, students can connect with NBEMS at 011-45593000 or write to NBEMS at its Communication Web Portal. Meanwhile, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has postponed the stray round of NEET SS counselling, citing overlap with Tamil Nadu's Round 2 counselling for in-service candidates. Additionally, MCC has permitted candidates who secured seats through INI SS counselling to resign from NEET SS 2025, though their security deposits will be forfeited. Last year, the NEET SS exam was conducted on September 9 and September 10 in CBT mode (Computer-Based Test) in two groups: morning and evening shift. Additionally, previous year scoring more than 50 per cent qualified in NEET-SS in their respective field of specialty.
