
Melinda French Gates reflects on her work with foundation as Bill Gates announces 2045 closure
French Gates, who studied computer science and worked at Microsoft, the company Gates created, exited the Gates Foundation last year to pursue philanthropy and investment through her own organization, Pivotal Ventures, which she started in 2015. The foundation changed its name from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation after her departure, which she previously described an "evolution" rather than a sudden move.
French Gates offered written responses to The Associated Press' questions about the foundation's 25th anniversary and its decision to close in 20 years. She said the former couple had always intended to spend down their resources.
"Ultimately, though," she wrote, "the timeline was Bill's decision to make with the board of trustees." Bill Gates says he will give away virtually all of his wealth over the next 20 years through the foundation, telling "CBS Mornings" that he hopes to live long enough to see some of the positive ways it has helped communities.
The foundation has focused on tackling global challenges, including poverty, disease and inequity.
The following responses from French Gates have been edited for length.
Q: What do you hope the foundation's legacy will be?
A: To me, the greatest measure of success would be if long after the foundation closed, someone, somewhere, was living a life that looked different because we existed. We talked a lot there about unlocking virtuous cycles. I like to think that right now, the foundation's work is contributing to a child getting a vaccine or a woman opening her first bank account — and that decades from now, their families and communities are going to continue to look different, because of what that child and that woman unlocked for the people around them.
Q: What specific areas did you influence at the foundation?
A: I was excited for us to launch the Giving Pledge because I believe that the most responsible thing to do with great wealth is give it away — and that you have an obligation to society to give it away as effectively as possible. I think it's important for people in that position to set norms around giving generously and to learn as much as possible from each other about how to be effective in their philanthropy.
(As for gender), for too long, global health and development efforts treated women and girls as secondary — if they were considered at all. Data wasn't collected on their experiences. Their specific health needs were often ignored.
There were so many questions that needed to be asked: What is the cost of all the unpaid labor women do at home? Will mobile banking make a difference if women don't have equal access to cellphones? Why are so many infectious diseases especially dangerous for women?
We opened a gender equality division, but not just that — we made gender equality a priority across all of our work. And we put a lot of resources into expanding access to contraception, starting with a big commitment we made in 2012.
Q: Why did you invest in opening more offices in other countries?
A: When you're doing this kind of work, it doesn't take long to see that solutions that seem great on paper may not work in reality. We funded community toilets in India that people — especially women —wouldn't use because they were dangerous to go to at night. We funded vaccines in Vietnam that had to be kept cold, but came in packaging that didn't fit into the small refrigerators most people had there. We funded a simple pump to help East African farmers irrigate their land, but women — who account for half of all smallholder farmers — wouldn't buy it, because they didn't want to be seen swaying their hips in the way the pump required.
There are many ways to learn about the cultural norms and logistical issues that determine whether a solution is feasible — and they all boil down to engaging people with local knowledge and lived experience, and trusting what they tell you.
Q: Some foundation goals — like eradicating polio and controlling malaria — depend on the generosity of other countries and donors. How can you accomplish those goals given recent cuts to international aid?
A: It's easy for people to forget — or maybe they didn't ever know — how hopeless the situation seemed around the year 2000, when malaria, tuberculosis and HIV were totally out of control. Since then, efforts funded, in large part, by development aid have saved more than 65 million lives from those diseases alone.
No doubt the work has just gotten a lot harder, but we never thought it was going to be easy. And we still have the key ingredients of success. The pipeline of innovations has never been stronger. More lower-income countries are taking a leading role. As some donors announce cuts, others are stepping up.

The study developed an AI applicability score for each job, and those with the highest results involved those two skills. "We find the highest AI applicability scores for knowledge work occupation groups such as computer and mathematical, and office and administrative support, as well as occupations such as sales whose work activities involve providing and communicating information," the study said."Additionally, we characterise the types of work activities performed most successfully, how wage and education correlate with AI applicability, and how real-world usage compares to predictions of occupational AI impact." The study called out operating machinery, like truck driving, as one example of how that could change down the line. Morris Misel is a global business futurist who predicts how current trends will evolve in the coming years. He told Yahoo Finance that while the rise of AI might be terrifying to some people, he didn't think there will be large swaths of workers suddenly without a job. "AI will create far more jobs that it decimates," he said. "There are so many things that humans can do that technology and artificial intelligence won't do for a long time." But he said you need to be adaptable and willing to learn new skills if you want to survive. CBA and Atlassian pull the trigger on job cuts due to AI Australia's biggest bank was slammed for revealing it would be shelving dozens of jobs. While this has happened multiple times recently at CBA, this was the first where AI was the main reason behind it. Ninety jobs are due to be cut by the bank, according to the Finance Sector Union (FSU). Half of those are roles in direct banking that are being impacted by a new voice bot system and local customer messaging specialist roles who interact with customers through the bank's online chat. 'To meet the changing needs of our customers, like many organisations, we review the skills we need and how we're organised to deliver the best customer experiences and outcomes. That means some roles and work can change,' a spokesperson told Yahoo Finance. The FSU is concerned what this wave of new AI technology will mean for Aussie workers in the future. 'There is a human cost to this. You can't just replace frontline jobs with a voice bot and expect the same service for customers," national secretary Julia Angrisano said. 'Customers shouldn't expect to speak to someone in Australia anymore, or even someone with a voice box. Atlassian, an Australian-American software company, also revealed this week that 150 staff are getting the flick. The news was delivered to employees in a pre-recorded video message by co-founder and CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes. Customer service and support roles are being impacted in the cuts, with some of their tasks now set to be done by artificial intelligence (AI). Figma IPO surge 'can't be the new norm' on Wall Street, Jim Cramer says
CNBC's Jim Cramer reviewed Thursday's market action and said that Figma's initial public offering overshadowed strong earnings results from tech giants Meta and Microsoft, warning that the design software company's opening pop is a sign of froth. "You have to hope that Figma's a one-and-done bout of enthusiasm. It just can't be the norm," he said. "And as someone who brought a company public during the heyday of 1999, I know what I'm talking about…We don't want to go back to the bubble territory." Figma shares more than tripled during its market debut and continued to soar in extended trading. Initially priced at $33, the stock finished the day up 250% to hit $115.50. Figma's software helps create interfaces for website and applications, and its customer base includes Google, Microsoft, Netflix and Uber. Cramer said there is an issue with Figma stock, not Figma the company. The software designer turns a profit, is growing fast and has a great product, he said. But the price of the stock is "wildly inflated" because it doesn't make enough money. He pointed out that Figma's price-to-sales ratio is much higher than that of both Meta and Microsoft, two of the largest companies in the world. Cramer wondered if Thursday marked a new phase of the bull market, one of "ludicrous valuations," but indicated he hoped that was not the case. It's better that Wall Street focus on quarterly results, Cramer continued. "At the end of the day, I hope we can go back to focusing on earnings rather than getting more IPOs like Figma," Cramer said. "We got to put this genie back in the bottle." Microsoft Surges Past $4T Market Cap After Blowout Earnings
Shares of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) jumped nearly 5% Thursday following a stellar earnings report, pushing its market capitalization past $4 trillion for the first time. Microsoft becomes only the second company to reach that milestone, following Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), which crossed the threshold three weeks earlier. The software giant's gains helped propel major ETFs to new heights. The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), which holds a 7% allocation to Microsoft, and the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), where Microsoft represents 9% of the portfolio, both traded at all-time highs. MSFT Earnings Strength In its fiscal fourth quarter, Microsoft reported earnings per share of $3.65, beating Wall Street estimates of $3.37. Revenue came in at $76.4 billion, topping expectations by 3.5% and marking an 18% increase from the prior year. At the heart of the company's growth story is artificial intelligence. Microsoft continues to embed AI into its own software products while offering cloud-based AI infrastructure to other companies through Azure, which has emerged as a key driver of growth. According to CEO Satya Nadella, Azure alone generated more than $75 billion in revenue over the past year, rising 34% from the year before. 'Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector,' Nadella said. 'We're innovating across the tech stack to help customers adapt and grow in this new era.' The broader "Azure and other cloud services" category grew by 39%, its fastest pace since 2022. Demand has been so strong that Microsoft has struggled to keep up. Despite ramping up capacity, Nadella acknowledged that supply remains constrained. Even OpenAI—Microsoft's high-profile AI partner, in which it holds a significant stake—has had to lean on other cloud providers like Oracle to meet its compute needs due to bottlenecks in Microsoft's infrastructure. Investors Bet on AI Demand To close the gap, Microsoft plans to spend a staggering $30 billion on capital expenditures this quarter alone. So far, investors appear supportive of the aggressive investment strategy, betting that AI demand will justify the outlay. The developments also bode well for Nvidia, whose chips power much of the AI infrastructure underpinning Microsoft's growth.
