Racing pigeon injured after going off course

Yahoo04-07-2025
A racing pigeon flying home to Wolverhampton from Truro, Cornwall, diverted to Cheshire and sustained a potentially fatal injury in the process.
Doreen Lacey found the pigeon bleeding and in distress in her kitchen in Congleton, having left her door ajar in the hot weather.
Her daughter Sharon Neild whisked the injured bird to Lower Moss Wood Wildlife Hospital where it received antibiotics.
"My mum knows that I've got a big love for pigeons and any animal in distress," Mrs Neild told BBC Radio Stoke.
Once recovered, the pair managed to trace the owner, whose son was delighted to collect the bird, and return him home safely.
"I've never seen so many feathers," described Mrs Lacey, who thought she was seeing things when she returned home from an eye injection.
She discovered the injured pigeon perched on the windowsill above the kitchen counter, with a great deal of bird droppings beneath him.
Mrs Lacey suspected her cat, Phoenix, may have been the culprit of the bird's injury.
Frightful of the chaotic bird but eager to help, she called on her animal-loving daughter.
"Cat's saliva is toxic to pigeons and they do need treatment within the first 48 hours," warned bird lover Mrs Neild.
Staff at Lower Moss Wood Wildlife Hospital in Knutsford were happy to treat the bird and said they would encourage other cat owners to follow Mrs Neild's example.
Using the information on the racing pigeon's tag, the women identified the Wolverhampton-based owner.
The lost bird has been recovering well and the owner hopes he will make another race.

Over 110 animals rescued from Northglenn home: Here's how you can help

DENVER (KDVR) — There are 115 animals currently being cared for by the Riverdale Animal Shelter after officers removed the pets from a single Northglenn home earlier this month. Two animals, a dog and a cat, were found dead inside the home, but officers were able to rescue 96 cats and 19 dogs from the house. The removal process took several days, with some animals so skittish they had to be trapped after the other animals had already been removed. Total number of dogs, cats removed from Northglenn home tops 100 Officers, geared up in hazmat suits and masks, were seen removing the dozens of animals from the home to the shock of neighbors. Inside the home were 'unsanitary and undesirable conditions,' according to the Northglenn Police Department. The agency shared photos from the inside that included animal feces and other waste inside the home. The surviving animals were taken to the Riverdale Animal Shelter, which is now in need of community support to help the animals. The animal shelter specifically needs: Purina brand pet food, especially kitten food Soft dog treats Towels: New or gently used Small cardboard boxes, toilet paper/paper towel rolls and newspaper Donors are asked to review the animal shelter's donation guidelines, available here, as some donors mean well, but send items that cannot be used. Reviewing the guidelines 'helps us stay focused on the animals' needs and reduce waste and storage strain,' the shelter explains on its website. Monetary donations are also appreciated and can be made here. The animal shelter is also in need of fosters and volunteer workers to help with the influx of animals. Foster applications can be accessed here. Volunteers at the shelter must be at least 16 years old and undergo a background check, and more information about that process is available here. Finally, adoption is also an option for some of the animals taken into the shelter. This link will take you to the adoptable pets at Riverdale Animal Shelter. 'We are proud of our community and thankful for everyone who has stepped up to care for these animals,' the Northglenn Police Department said on social media. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
