Why Frank Sinatra was offered Bruce Willis' part in ‘Die Hard'

New York Post31-05-2025
Fans almost saw Frank Sinatra do it, his way.
Although fans know Bruce Willis for playing the iconic role of John McClane in the 1988 action/thriller 'Die Hard,' it turns out that 20th Century Studios was contractually obligated to offer a certain A-list singer the role first.
'Die Hard' was adapted from the 1979 novel 'Nothing Lasts Forever,' written by former detective Roderick Thorp, and was a sequel to his first book, 'The Detective.'

The first novel was already made into a film, the 1968 thriller/crime by the same name which starred Sinatra and Lee Remick.

Since the movie studio had the rights to the original book and its sequel before they were written for the big screen, they had to ask Sinatra first. He was 70 at the time and declined the part.
'Die Hard' also starred Alan Rickman, Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald VelJohnson, and William Atherton.
Prior to landing the part of John McClane, Willis, 70, was only known for starring in the comedy series, 'Moonlighting,' opposite Cybill Shepherd.

The action star went on to reprise his role in all five 'Die Hard Films,' including: 'Die Hard 2' (1990), 'Die Hard with a Vengeance' (1995), 'Live Free or Die Hard' (2007), and the final installment, 'A Good Day to Die Hard' in 2013.
In March, in honor of Willis' 70th birthday, his 'Die Hard with a Vengeance' costar Samuel L. Jackson revealed the advice he received from him on set.
'He told me, 'Hopefully you'll be able to find a character that, when you make bad movies and they don't make any money, you can always go back to this character everybody loves,'' Jackson, 76, told Vanity Fair at the time. 'He said, 'Arnold's got 'Terminator.' Sylvester's got 'Rocky, Rambo.' I've got John McClane.' I'm like, 'Oh, okay.' And it didn't occur to me until I got that Nick Fury role—and I had a nine-picture deal to be Nick Fury—that, Oh, I'm doing what Bruce said. I've got this character now.'

During the Vanity Fair sit-down, Bedelia, 77, who played McClane's ex-wife Holly Gennero in the first two 'Die Hard' movies, also took a moment to reflect on the cult classic.
'I think that he's basically underrated because he was a big box-office star. So that immediately works against you,' she explained. 'I think, in his mind, he always wanted to be an actor and to do interesting work. That's why becoming famous for such a huge, boffo movie was not expected from him.'
'But once he was there, it was kind of like, you know, 'I'm an actor,'' Bedelia continued. 'And I don't think he saw, in terms of the work, a lot of difference between them. One was not more important than the other, because he was getting to work with interesting directors, with interesting scripts.'

Even Willis, who retired from acting in 2022, following his diagnosis of aphasia and then frontotemporal dementia in 2023, didn't know how big him or his 'Die Hard' character would be.
'I never expected to become this famous,' he said in 1990. 'I wanted to be successful as an actor; I never equated that [with being] famous and having your life story in every newspaper in the country. I just never thought that far ahead. And I don't know who does.'

But what a wonderful journey we've been on,' he said. 'We were just talking about the first time we came to Comic Con. It was just eye-opening for us to see this amazing fandom; thank you so much.' 9 Heughan at the 'Outlander' panel. John Salangsang/Shutterstock The 'Couple Next Door' star took a moment to praise the fandom that has stood by the series since its inception in 2014. 'You've been with us this whole journey, we've created this amazing family. So it's been hard, that we're saying this might be our last Comic-Con, but who knows?' Heughan teased. 'And it's just been such an amazing journey to go on with these incredible cast and the crew and, of course, amazing writers as well. So we're very thankful.' Advertisement Touching on Jamie's fate in season 8, Heughan told the crowd that he is 'seeing the development of the character, being more fragile, having more to lose, having lost Claire about 50 times, he knows what it is to lose her, and he will do anything to stop it. So, yeah, it's been an amazing journey.' 9 Sam Heughan dishes on season 8 of Outlander. 'I'm sorry I'm not there with you,' she told the audience in a pre-recorded message. 'I really wish I could be, but unfortunately, I'm filming something at the moment, and the schedule just wouldn't allow it. So I offer my sincerest apologies. But I know that you're in very, very capable hands with Sam and Sophie and Richard and Marin and Matt. I'm sending you all love.' Balfe, 45, continued, 'We have shared many a good time in Hall H together. I seem to recall vaguely, some drinking, some dancing, maybe some Irish dancing. There have been so many amazing memories, but it's not done yet.' 9 Sam Heughan at 2025 Comic-Con. Dermot Mulroney teases a 'My Best Friend's Wedding' sequel

Say a little prayer for this. Dermot Mulroney has officially confirmed that 'there is talk of a sequel' to his 1997 modern classic rom-com, 'My Best Friend's Wedding.' 'I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote,' he exclusively told The Post while promoting his Netflix show 'The Hunting Wives.' Unfortunately for Jules, Michael informs her that he's marrying Kimmy Wallace (Cameron Diaz). A heartbroken Jules, who realizes she's in love with Michael, goes to the wedding with her gay friend George (Rupert Everett) posing as her pretend fiancé — and schemes to break up the couple. The P.J. Hogan-directed movie ends on a bittersweet note, with Jules accepting that Michael is happy with Kimmy, as George supports her. Advertisement 'Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream,' Mulroney, 61, recalled of filming the movie. 'You can do a really tragic dramatic movie and still have tons of fun,' the 'Family Stone' star added, 'but I'll never forget those days in Chicago on that [movie].' Mulroney, who is also in the long-running NBC series 'Chicago Fire,' explained: 'I've returned to Chicago so many times, and [the memories from that movie] just keeps coming back to me. It has been a big part of my life.' 6 Dermot Mulroney in 'My Best Friend's Wedding.' ©TriStar Pictures/Courtesy Everett Colle / Everett Collection He added, 'It was a life-altering experience, there's no other way to describe it.' The cast of the film reunited for an Entertainment Weekly photo shoot in 2019. 'I just thought it was really clever and just funny. All the physical comedy I loved. Lots of falling down and falling through things, falling all over myself, falling over Dermot,' Roberts, 57, said at the time. 'The scene, for me, that made it feel so authentic and earnest is when I finally tell Dermot's character, 'Pick me. Let me make you happy.' Just that line: That's just so succinct and sweet and meaningful.' Advertisement Diaz, 52, quipped: 'I got to work with these folks and Julia. It was, like, a huge break for me.' 'My Best Friend's Wedding' opened to $21 million and ultimately ranked in a domestic gross of $127 million.

Jamie Lee Curtis confirms a ‘Murder, She Wrote' reboot: ‘It's happening'

That's not all she wrote. Jamie Lee Curtis has confirmed that she will star in a 'Murder, She Wrote' reboot. 'Oh, it's… happening,' Curtis told Entertainment Tonight. 'We're a minute away, but yeah, [I'm] very excited. Very excited,' the 'Halloween' actress, 66, added. 'But I'm tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I have a couple of other things to hustle, but then I'll get to enjoy that work.' 7 Jamie Lee Curtis attends the 'Freakier Friday' LA premiere on July 22, 2025. ''Murder, She Wrote' has given me more worldwide attention than any other role I played in the movies or on the stage,' she said in 2013 while receiving an honorary Oscar. Curtis has enjoyed a career resurgence lately, as she reprised her 'Halloween' role in the 2018 movie, won an Oscar in 2023 (in the 'best supporting actress' category for 'Everything Everywhere All At Once') and she's in the buzzy Hulu show, 'The Bear.' On 'Murder, She Wrote,' behind the scenes, Lansbury was known for helping hire older actors in guest roles, who had dwindling careers and needed work in order to qualify for their Screen Actors Guild medical/dental benefits. Randall Bosley, a former extra from 'Murder, She Wrote' told the LA Times in 2023 about an incident when Lansbury passed the Craft Services table on set, and saw a paltry offering of only chips, coffee, and water. Bosley recalled that Lansbury said, 'This is unacceptable. I want my people well taken care of. I'm going back to my trailer and I'm not coming back until this table is properly stocked with nourishing food and drink for everyone.' Bosley said, 'Soon thereafter the craft service table was filled with the most wonderful array of food and drink. It became well known among people doing extra work that this was a show you really wanted to work on.'
