Brentford miss out on Europe after Marshall Munetsi stunner snatches Wolves draw

Leader Live25-05-2025
Both sides were far from perfect in a first half which made for an entertaining affair, with Bryan Mbeumo opening the scoring for Brentford with his 20th goal of the campaign.
Amid all the action, the Wolves fans were referencing Manchester United with their songs, aimed at Matheus Cunha who was possibly playing his last match for the club ahead of an anticipated summer move to the Red Devils.
Wolves forced the issue in the second half in a bid to avoid a fourth successive defeat and the hosts got a deserved equaliser thanks to Munetsi's bullet finish in the 75th minute.
The result saw Wolves finish in 16th place, below United on goal difference, while Brentford signed off the campaign in 10th and outside the European spots.
Cunha looked the brightest player through the early stages on what could be his last appearance in the black and gold of Wolves and his header forced Mark Flekken into his first save.
The hosts started in rampant fashion, and Nelson Semedo, another player who could also be out of Molineux by the time next season starts, lashed wide before a tame effort on target was easily saved by Flekken.
It did not take long for Thomas Frank's side to warm into the contest though, Wolves keeper Jose Sa having his first meaningful save to make when he kept out Kevin Schade after he had danced inside and tried his luck.
Wolves were the creators of their own downfall as the visitors took the lead in the 20th minute.
The hosts tried to play it quick from the back but Rayan Ait-Nouri was caught in possession and the Bees swarmed forward, with an initial strike bouncing out to Christian Norgaard who picked out Mbeumo to open the scoring.
Brentford could have made it two before the break. Wolves wanted a foul when Cunha was brought down at one end, but play continued and Brentford broke forward with Yoane Wissa. He played the ball into Keane Lewis-Potter but, having been one-on-one with Sa, he made a mess of his end product.
Flekken remained busy throughout the first 45 minutes and he was on hand to keep out Cunha's half-volley from range before stopping Semedo from similar distance soon after.
Brentford had another chance to double their lead at the end of an entertaining first half when Wissa took a cross down down well and stabbed towards goal. Sa did not know much about it but did enough to keep the ball out.
Wolves came flying out of the traps in the second period and should have been on level terms as Munetsi's ball across found an unmarked Goncalo Guedes but he could only scuff wide of the target.
Molineux erupted with 15 minutes to go with an equaliser.
A long ball up the field was headed down by Jorgen Strand Larsen and into the path of Munetsi who rifled past Flekken with a magnificent first-time finish from 20 yards into the top corner.

Man Utd to have major say in Liverpool's £150m Alexander Isak transfer chase

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak continues to face an uncertain future and the Sweden international's next move could hinge on Manchester United's business The future of Liverpool target Alexander Isak could yet be impacted with old rivals Manchester United. While United aren't in for Isak themselves, their transfer battle with Newcastle over Benjamin Sesko could have a knock-on effect on the Swede. ‌ Liverpool's initial approach for Isak was knocked back by Newcastle, who want close to £150million for their leading man. They have bid roughly half that for Slovenia international Sesko - £69.5m plus up to £8m in add-ons - but dont have a clear run at the RB Leipzig star. ‌ According to The Telegraph, Liverpool have no plans to make a renewed bid for Isak as things stand. However, the same publication indicates things might change if the Magpies sign a new striker. ‌ Manchester United have a chance to throw a spanner in the works, then. If they are able to beat Eddie Howe's side to Sesko then, in all likelihood, Isak will be going nowhere. The latest developments come as United and Newcastle both brace for a decision from Sesko - with a deadline potentially coming as soon as Tuesday night. The striker is ready to trade the Bundesliga for the Premier League, but both clubs will feel they have a case. It has been a frustrating summer so far for Newcastle. Anthony Elanga their only senior outfield signing, joining in a £55m move from Nottingham Forest, while goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has joined from Southampton. They have missed out on other targets, though, with French striker Hugo Ekitike opting for Liverpool and Joao Pedro choosing Chelsea. It's not just forwards who have looked elsewhere, either, with centre-back Dean Huijsen moving to Real Madrid and goalkeeper James Trafford deciding to rejoin Manchester City. One man who could yet move to St James' Park is Yoane Wissa. Eddie Howe's side have so far failed to meet Brentford's asking price for the Congolese international, who has now returned to training in West London, but there is still time left in the window. ‌ "We're looking for the best players that we can get," Newcastle manager Howe said over the weekend. "Whatever our target position is, we're looking for the best so I see all situations open and available to us. I feel that's the only way that we're going to get to where we want to go, which is to maximise, and it's quality over quantity. "It always has been. That's always been the way that we try to work and the way that we try to recruit, and I think we've done it pretty well to this point. "It's been a challenging summer, because we've missed out on various targets for loads of different reasons, but we're still very competitive, and we're still in there trying to bring very good players to the club - and that won't change til the window shuts."

Palmer considering Deauville or Newmarket for Fitzella

The daughter of Too Darn Hot broke her maiden at Haydock and was not disgraced in the Albany Stakes at the Royal meeting when fourth behind Karl Burke's smart Venetian Sun. But she came out on top on her return to the Berkshire circuit when beating Staya by a length and Palmer is now plotting where to send her next before a trip to the Breeders' Cup. The Malpas-based handler said: 'We were very pleased with that. She seems to have come out of it in very good order. 'She's already had four starts. It's a question of how many more times do we want to run her this season. She's kind of grown and changed all year and I think she is a filly with a future, I don't think she is just a two-year-old. 'In my mind there will probably be no more than two more goes this year. She is potentially a filly for the Breeders' Cup, so that possibly means just one more European run. We want to do everything we can to make sure that's a winning European run before we go to California. 'In my head I thought maybe the Prix du Calvados (at Deauville on August 24), which is where Simmering went last year after winning the Princess Margaret and I thought that looked quite a nice fit. 'Predicting and reading the ground in France is tricky and she does want top of the ground, but it's very hot in August in Deauville and it dries out very quickly being by the beach and by the river and we'll just have to be on weather watch. 'If that didn't work I thought probably the Rockfel (at Newmarket on September 26) would be an obvious target, it'll be another month later but the Cambridgeshire meeting tends to throw up quite quick ground, still being relatively early. 'She is in the Moyglare as well. But the Moyglare being that jump to Group One company might be the hardest way to keep her unbeaten, to make sure her next run is a winning one. 'Any Group winning two-year-old from this point of the season onwards, you're thinking about the Guineas. There's a lot of water to throw under the bridge between now and then but that's what we'd like her to be.'

Man Utd make Harry Maguire transfer decision after five offers for defender

Manchester United have decided to reject approaches from five clubs for their defender Harry Maguire this summer, according to reports. Three teams in the Premier League and two from Italy have made offers to sign the England international centre-back ahead of the 2025-26 season. Maguire's current contract is due to expire next summer – and while talks have not yet taken place over an extension – United are keen to keep him. That's according to the Daily Mail, who also report that Maguire has no desire to leave Old Trafford and sees his long-term future at the club. Maguire turns 33 in March but wishes to spend the rest of his career with United and wants to emulate the likes of Denis Irwin and Steve Bruce. The Englishman has made 246 appearances for the Red Devils since joining the club in a £80m deal from Leicester City six years ago. Should United change their minds and decide to offload Maguire, there are a number of other clubs – in addition to the five teams that made offers this summer – who want to recruit him. Turkish side Galatasaray are known to be admirers of Maguire, who has also attracted interest from French duo Monaco and Marseille. It's also thought that Fenerbahce and Besiktas could offer escapes if Maguire changed his own mind. Maguire used to be United's skipper but was stripped of the captaincy by former head coach Erik ten Hag. He came close to joining West Ham two years ago but has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence under current United boss Ruben Amorim. Maguire was recently put in a new six-man leadership group at Old Trafford by Amorim ahead of the upcoming campaign. 'We have a leadership group now,' Amorim said. 'It's not just Bruno, it's not just Harry, it's six guys now. 'They are responsible for the group. There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with that. 'I said to them in this year, you deal with that. Small issues are with you guys. 'You are responsible. All these small changes, I think it's helping the group. 'We have Bruno, we have Licha, we have Harry, we have Diogo, we have Tom and we have Nous. So it's not just the oldest ones. 'Nous is in the group because he's a character that I like. And I try to understand the dynamic of the group and try to reach every space. 'They are the guys that are responsible to keep everyone in line.'
