Royal Welsh Show: Paramedic Carys Powell exhibits sheep
A Powys exhibitor is hoping for a good result at this year's Royal Welsh Show as she does the arduous work of developing show worthy sheep while training to be a paramedic. Carys Powell, 25, from Abbey Cwm Hir near Llandrindod Wells is hoping that this year her efforts pay off as she exhibits her Zwartble sheep at the prestigious show. She has done this while also doing the gruelling training required to become a paramedic. 'We are based just up the road form here,' said Carys. 'We started the flock back in 2018. We built that up slowly and this is about our third year showing. We have about six with us. 'I am a farmer's daughter and I am currently training to be a paramedic. I am doing the farming in between the training. I am lucky I have mum and dad, they are a great help. 'We do it as a team really and we have met a lot of lovely people along the way. We just keep coming back. 'It's a bit flexible, I help at weekends when I am home and then I am down Swansea way or wherever I need to be for my course.' Carys' father Dai, was full of pride and said that farming was in the blood. 'We have been farmers all our lives, including my father before me,' said Dai. 'We have lived where we are now for 20 years. I have been on the farm since the early 1960s.' 'Before this we were just visitors. I'm a life governor, we also do smaller shows but this is the main show that I do. 'I've got a bit of nerves but it is good to have them. There is such a high standard here as well which is such a nice thing because you know you are with the best in the Wales.'

‘Miracle' eagle that defied the odds spotted in sky after months missing
A white-tailed eagle whose survival was hailed as a "miracle" has been spotted over Mull almost a year after its disappearance. The bird of prey fell from its nest in July 2023 and broke its wing. Uncharacteristically for the species, the chick's parents nursed it back to health. The bird, nicknamed 'Kinky', has since learned to fly and moves in a distinctive wobbly pattern while in the sky. RSPB Scotland had regarded Kinky as a "miracle chick" before it vanished in autumn 2024. Its return was confirmed on 1 July by Blair Ketteringham, a crew member of Mull Charters, who sighted it circling over the island of Forsa in Loch na Keal, Mull. RSPB Scotland ambassador Dave Sexton said he could not believe the photo sent to him by Mr Ketteringham. 'Frankly, I was in disbelief, as I seriously doubted if Kinky could survive last winter without his parents to support him,' he said. 'Clearly they had to move on with their lives and are finally breeding again this year, but of Kinky there'd been no sign despite our appeal. 'He was soaring high over Eorsa like any other eagle would and eventually came down to land where he interacted briefly with a different adult sea eagle. 'It's testament to his strength of character and incredible survival skills that he seems to have overcome his major injury – with a lot of help from mum and dad.' Mr Sexton added: 'For most eagles, a broken wing would be a death sentence as they're unable to hunt and feed. 'But Kinky is a shining example of what perseverance can achieve.' According to the RSPB, the white-tailed eagle is the UK's largest bird of prey. It is also known as the sea eagle as it prefers to live near the coast. It went extinct in the UK during the early 1990s due to hunting, and the present population is descended from reintroduced birds. The eagle's wingspan can reach up to 2.5 metres and it can be identified by its pale head and neck, which can be almost white in older animals. It is a Schedule 1 species which means it is illegal to disturb the birds.

Rescue team save woman from Brecon Beacons waterfall
A mountain rescue team saved a woman from a waterfall in the Brecon Beacons after just coming back from the Cardiff three peaks challenge. The Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team who had been helping at the three peaks challenge in Cardiff managed to make their way to a woman at a popular site on the Powys border. The team were called out to the Sgwd Gwladus waterfall, near Pontneddfechan Village in the very south of Powys on Saturday (June28). A spokesperson for the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team said: 'As we were getting back to our homes from the long but very enjoyable day out at our inaugural Cardiff 3 Peaks Event, we were requested by our colleagues from Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team, who were already dealing with another incident on our behalf from earlier in the afternoon, to respond to a second incident in their area involving an injured lady walker on the path.' Despite the already long day, 10 members of the team responded, making it a 'longer day out than expected', and made their way to the woman who was with her partner. 'During the stretcher carry we were joined by additional members from both Western Beacons and Brecon MRTs who'd become available from the other ongoing incidents. 'We send our best wishes to the lady for a speedy recovery and another occasion of extending our gratitude for the support, tolerance and understanding of our team members' partners, family and friends.'
