PWHL Vancouver names Brian Idalski first-ever head coach
PWHL Vancouver has named Brian Idalski as its first-ever head coach ahead of its inaugural season, the team announced Monday.
'Brian is a proven winner who knows our sport, the players, and has coached at the highest levels,' PWHL Vancouver general manager Cara Gardner Morey said in a release. 'What stands out in Brian's experience is his ability to build and transform the programs he is a part of, from his work in professional leagues, at the Olympics, and turning collegiate teams into nationally ranked contenders. I'm excited that he will lead our incredible group in Vancouver and can't wait to see his vision and influence shape our foundation.'

Idalski was head coach of the St. Cloud State Huskies women's hockey team the past three seasons. He previously coached at the University of North Dakota for 10 seasons and the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point for five. He also coached the Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays to two ZhHL championships and was head coach of the Chinese National Women's Team for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

'I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to join an organization and city like Vancouver and want to thank Cara and the league for their trust and belief in me,' Idalski said. 'The PWHL has had a huge impact on the global game, and to be a part of that — with expansion helping push it even further forward — is an unbelievable feeling. I've been associated with a lot of players across the PWHL, either coaching them personally or against them over the years, so this role brings me full circle with an eagerness to work with the league's world-class talent. The team that Cara has assembled is fantastic and I embrace the challenge that comes with our high expectations.'
The PWHL, which launched in January 2024 with six teams, recently announced its expansion to Seattle and Vancouver and held its expansion draft on June 9.
PWHL Vancouver will debut this fall at Pacific Coliseum, the former home of the WHL's Vancouver Giants and the NHL's Vancouver Canucks.
The 2025 PWHL Draft is set for Tuesday in Ottawa.

USA vs. Costa Rica live tracker: Updates, score, highlights as USMNT battle Los Ticos in Gold Cup quarterfinal
The U.S. men's national team has won three straight at the Gold Cup, but few are convinced. The victories were narrow, the performances uneven, and now the tournament gets real. Next up for the Americans: Costa Rica on Sunday in Minneapolis in the first of three potential matches that could redefine a turbulent year. Mauricio Pochettino's makeshift squad brings youth, energy and a few standout performances from Malik Tillman, Patrick Agyemang and goalkeeper Matt Freese. But they also face familiar concerns with the World Cup less that a year away. Advertisement Costa Rica, meanwhile, has looked vulnerable but gritty under Miguel Herrera. The Ticos scraped through Group A and arrive without star striker Manfred Ugalde. Still, the wily squad won't make things easy. On paper, the U.S. should advance. But on the pitch, things don't always go according to plan. 🚨 Columbus closes the gap after narrow win over Philadelphia
Matchday 20 of the 2025 MLS season will be wrapped up this evening with just two fixtures remaining on the docket to close out another intriguing weekend of action across the United States and Canada. Here is how it all went down in Columbus as the Crew clashed with the Philadelphia Union ahead of the upcoming late fixture in Los Angeles as the Vancouver Whitecaps lock horns with LAFC. Farsi's strike ends Philly's unbeaten run Scorers: Farsi 45+2' Advertisement Eastern Conference powerhouse Columbus Crew banked a massive home result tonight after a narrow 1-0 win over pack-leading Philadelphia Union. Across what was a dull yet dominant opening 45 minutes of action at Field, the Crew took a justifiable 1-0 lead on the stroke of halftime after Mo Farsi's marauding run to the back post was picked out by Lassi Lappalainen for the Algerian to slot past Andre Blake. Thanks to a severe weather delay, a running theme across competitive football this summer, play resumed in Columbus as Wilfried Nancy's men remained largely on the front foot after crossing the hour mark. Despite a few changes, including introducing teenage talents Cavan Sullivan and Sal Olivas, Philly headmaster Bradley Carnell could not rewrite the script and find an equalizer before the full-time whistle. Advertisement With that, the Crew ended the Union's 11-match unbeaten run, while also closing the gap to the Eastern Conference leaders to just three points.
