Maharashtra's single-feed distilleries get the nod to use grains, mainly maize, to produce ethanol
While a few standalone distilleries in Maharashtra already utilise grains as feed, the majority are attached to sugar mills, depending on molasses and sugar cane juice to produce ethanol. These distilleries could operate only three to four months annually due to raw material shortages. With the inclusion of grains, they can now function nearly all year round, benefiting grain producers, especially maize farmers in Maharashtra.
In states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana, distilleries have been permitted to use maize and rice for ethanol production. Experts noted that Maharashtra's distilleries have significant potential to produce ethanol from maize, a crop predominantly grown by non-irrigated farmers. Nearly 54 lakh tonnes of maize, primarily a kharif crop, are produced in Maharashtra.
State govt issued a notification on July 23 to allow single-feed distilleries to adopt dual feed.

"Now, the mills that are financially capable of setting up silos to store the grains, developing facilities to grind the grains and fermenting, can easily start using the distilleries to convert grains into ethanol. Around 70% of the sugar mills have distilleries attached. Most of them have increased their capacity, but they are short of raw material.
Now, with maize, which is a prominent crop in Maharashtra, they can run the distilleries for most parts of the year and thereby overcome the financial hurdles they are facing," said Vijay Autade, a sugar cane industry expert.
For the past three years, sugar mill associations sought dual feed status for distilleries from state govt and have now succeeded. "Centre had allowed ethanol production from grains since 2018; however, the distilleries in Maharashtra had no such permission and relied only on molasses and sugar cane juice, unlike the north Indian states, where the distilleries started using grains and benefited a lot. We were also trying to get permission.
Accordingly, state govt, through a notification, has given permission. We expect that the mills can run their distilleries for 12 months. The farmers producing maize will get a good price. Also, we can achieve ethanol blending to 27% from the current 20%. The oil import dependency will thus be reduced," said B B Thombare, the president of the West India Sugar Mills Association.
Dual-feed distilleries require specific equipment and process mechanisms for handling, fermenting, and distilling both types of feedstock. Currently, in Maharashtra, molasses-based distilleries can produce 316 crore litres of ethanol in a yearly cycle, while grain-based distilleries can produce 50 crore litres.

The state-level programme, held at ICAR-CIFA on the city's outskirts was attended by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi transferring Rs 20,500 crore directly into the bank accounts of over 9.7 crore farmers across the country from Varanasi. Under the scheme, Rs 2,000 each was transferred directly to the bank accounts of farmers. Majhi said, "It is our govt's commitment to ensure the inclusion of all eligible beneficiaries under the scheme. No eligible farmer in the state should be left out," he said, adding that saturation drives are underway in all blocks. He emphasised the govt's pro-farmer approach, highlighting that over 50 lakh farmers are also receiving Rs 4,000 annually under the CM-Kisan scheme. Together with PM-Kisan, eligible farmers are receiving a total of Rs 10,000 per year, he added. Calling on farmers to diversify, Majhi asked them to practice fisheries and animal husbandry to boost income. "Your income will not just double but multiply many times," he said. St Xavier's School ordered to deposit Rs 2cr in FD amid fee dispute
Ahmedabad: St Xavier's School in Navrangpura was directed by the fee regulatory committee (FRC) to deposit nearly Rs 2 crore in a fixed deposit (FD) after it was found to have collected Rs 16,000 more per student than the approved fee. The committee issued a notice to the school and called for a personal hearing, during which this interim arrangement was made. According to reports, the FRC set the annual fees for the academic years 2024–25, 2025–26, and 2026–27. Compared to the previous year (2023–24), the committee reduced the fee for Classes 1 to 8 by Rs 16,859. However, the school continued to collect the earlier proposed amount of Rs 39,360 from students, prompting complaints from parents. In response, the Ahmedabad district education officer (DEO) ordered the school to refund the excess amount within seven days. The school, however, failed to comply, stating that it filed an appeal with the revision committee challenging the FRC's fee order. The DEO rejected this explanation, and the FRC issued a fresh notice, summoning the school for a hearing. According to the FRC's ruling, if the revision committee upholds the FRC's original fee order, the FD amount will be refunded to the students. If the committee approves a fee hike, the school will be allowed to reclaim the FD amount along with the accrued interest. This interim solution ensures the protection of student interests while the fee revision appeal is under review. India inaugurateseight new consular application centres across America
. India has opened eight new consular centres across the US, significantly expanding the delivery footprint for visa, passport and other services and streamlining them for the Indian diaspora in the country. India's Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra on Friday virtually inaugurated the new Indian Consular Application Centres (ICAC) in Boston, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Edison, Orlando, Raleigh and San Jose. An additional ICAC will open soon in Los Angeles. All consular services, including passport, visa, OCI, surrender certificate, life certificate, birth/marriage certificate, police clearance, attestations, and more, will be provided exclusively through VFS Global Centres. The expansion brings the total number of ICACs across the US to 17, making consular services more accessible to Indian and American citizens in the country. In addition to the new centres, the Embassy of India is enhancing operational accessibility -- all 17 ICACs will operate six days a week, including Saturdays, offering flexibility for applicants.
