Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated on Friday the newly constructed Jinnah Square Murree Road Underpass, a project completed in 35 days.
The underpass, which spans approximately 479 metres and features three traffic lanes, is part of a broader initiative to create a signal-free corridor from Islamabad Airport to Murree, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and reducing travel time for commuters.
During the inauguration ceremony, PM Sharif commended Interior Minister Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and his team, including Chairperson Capital Development Authority (CDA) Muhammad Ali Randhawa and IG Islamabad Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, for their efforts in completing the project swiftly. He described the initiative as nationally beneficial, ensuring smooth connectivity to the scenic tourist destination of Murree.
'It has been due to the unity and harmony of the nation and the blessings of Almighty Allah. Moreover, the meritorious history of the nation will be remembered by the enemy forever,' the prime minister said.
Apart from the underpass, the project includes a road network and landscaping.
PM Sharif noted that the nearly 9-kilometre-long connectivity route would not only benefit the residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad but also the entire nation through its enhanced connectivity heading towards Murree.
Earlier, Interior Minister Naqvi briefed PM Sharif on the project's progress and future plans, including the design work for the Shaheen Chowk Underpass and upcoming tourism projects such as a Safari Park and Chairlift in the Murree region.
The event was attended by Federal Ministers Hanif Abbasi, Dr Tariq Fazl Chaudhary, Ministers of State Talal Chaudhary and Talha Burki, and other parliamentarians.
Moreover, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also inaugurated the Nawaz Sharif Flyover in Sargodha. Provincial Minister Sohaib Ahmed Bharth informed her that the project had been completed in eight months at a cost of Rs2.2 billion. More than 30,000 vehicles are expected to use the 1.3km-long flyover daily.
People travelling to Sargodha from Khushab, Mianwali and Bhakkar will benefit from the project.

Rs225m irregularities reported in CDA accounts

ISLAMABAD: The Draft Audit Report 2024–25 reports over Rs 225 million in losses linked to delays, land issues, and unadjusted payments involving the Capital Development Authority (CDA). A major portion of the reported loss stems from delays in the execution of a federal project for the establishment of a boys' college in Margalla Town. Although the project was approved in 2019 with a planned completion period of two years, delays in land possession and rising construction costs led to a significant increase in the project's total cost. Payments for the land were made in installments over more than a decade, but possession was handed over only in 2021. By mid-2023, the project had achieved only minimal progress, and the lease agreement for the land had still not been finalised. Another observation in the report relates to the use of land belonging to the International Islamic University Islamabad. The CDA failed to remove its asphalt plant and MPO Directorate from university premises, despite official directives. It also issued allotment letters for additional land that the university had not agreed to give up. The matter remains unresolved and continues to pose environmental and security concerns for the university community. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

PM explains Pakistan's anti-terror plan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to eradicating terrorism, citing the country's internationally recognised counterterrorism strategy and urging stronger coordination across government agencies. Chairing a high-level meeting of the Steering Committee on Counter-Terrorism and Establishment of State Authority – referred to as the 'Harden the State' initiative – Sharif was joined by Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, senior military officials, and federal and provincial ministers. The meeting focused on strengthening national institutions and addressing threats posed by extremist groups labelled by the government as 'Fitna-al-Hindustan and Fitna-al-Khawarij'. These terms, part of a broader psychological and semantic campaign, are used to delegitimise insurgent and terrorist actors. 'Our resolve to root out terrorism remains unshaken,' Sharif said, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office. 'The world recognises Pakistan's successful operations against terrorist elements, and we shall continue to build on this momentum.' The government's strategy, described as 'comprehensive, effective and workable,' includes a blend of military action, legislative reform, and public engagement aimed at dismantling extremist networks. Sharif cited operations such as Radd-ul-Fasaad and Zarb-e-Azb as 'historic victories' that have gained international recognition. He called for effective coordination between federal and provincial authorities and directed full implementation of the committee's recommendations. The prime minister emphasised the importance of ground operations, legal instruments, and efforts to combat extremist narratives in the public sphere. Sharif also paid tribute to the country's armed forces and law enforcement agencies, calling them 'a source of pride for the entire nation.' In addition to terrorism, the committee reviewed other internal security concerns, including the smuggling of goods and the presence of undocumented immigrants. Sharif reported progress in curbing smuggling and noted that these efforts were contributing positively to Pakistan's economic outlook. He also confirmed the ongoing repatriation of undocumented Afghan nationals, in line with international law. 'Only a terror-free, peaceful, and strong state structure can restore international investor confidence,' Sharif said. He linked recent security gains to economic reforms, pointing to increased digitisation, tax system improvements, a record surge in the Pakistan Stock Exchange, and improved global credit ratings as indicators of renewed investor trust. Among those in attendance were Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, National Security Adviser and ISI Director General Lt Gen Asim Malik, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema, Adviser on Inter-Provincial Coordination Rana Sanaullah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, as well as chief secretaries, police chiefs, and senior officials from across the provinces.
